Before getting into the installing Windows Server 2008 R2, you have to first gain a knowledge of the different editions available and also the corresponding hardware requirements. It is also essential to be aware on the upgrade solutions with each edition. With this objective under consideration, this chapter will consentrate on providing a breakdown of both the different Windows Server 2008 R2 editions along with the recommended hardware requirements.
The first item of note for users informed about the first version of Windows Server 2008 is usually that the R2 edition is available for 64-bit systems. Whilst some editions in the original Windows Server 2008 main system were easily obtainable in 32-bit versions, it is now no more the case to the R2 version.
The Foundation edition of Windows Server 2008 R2 would be the new beginner's edition which is designed specifically using the small business at heart. It could be the least expensive with the various editions and lacks some in the more advanced functionality typically located in the higher end editions like full Active Directory support and Hyper-V virtualization capabilities. In addition, the Foundation edition limits some with the included features, like restricting the amount of concurrent remote desktop services connections to 50 and is particularly able to access only 1 processor and 8GB of RAM.
Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard is yet another one of Microsofts elementary server offerings alongside Windows Web Server R2 2008 and Windows Server R2 2008 Foundation. As previously stated, whilst the main version of Windows Server 2008 supported both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, the R2 version supports only 64-bit processors. In terms of hardware, Standard Edition supports approximately 4GB of RAM and 4 processors.
Windows Server 2008 is primarily geared towards small and mid-sized businesses SMBs and is particularly ideal for providing domain, web, DNS, remote access, print, file and application services. Support for clustering, however, is notably absent out of this edition. An upgrade approach to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard is obtainable from Windows Server 2008, Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition.
Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition provides greater functionality and scalability as opposed to Standard Edition. As with Standard Edition both 32-bit and 64-bit versions can be purchased. Enhancements include support at as many as 8 processors and as much as 2TB of RAM.
Additional features with the Enterprise edition include support for clusters of as much as 16 nodes and Active Directory Federated Services AD FS.
Windows Server 2000, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition may all be upgraded to Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition.
The Datacenter edition represents the superior end with the Windows Server 2008 R2 product range and it is targeted at mission critical enterprises requiring stability and high uptime levels.
Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter edition supports approximately 2TB of RAM as well as a minimum of 8 processors up to only 64. Upgrade paths to Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Edition can be obtained from the Datacenter editions of Windows Server 2008, Windows 2000 and 2003.
Windows Web Server R2 2008 is basically a version of Windows Server 2008 R2 designed primarily with the purpose of providing web services. It includes Internet Information Services IIS 7.0 in addition to associated services including Simple Mail Transfer Protocol SMTP and Telnet. It supports around 4 processors but RAM is fixed to 32GB.
As with other basic editions, Windows Web Server 2008 R2 lacks many with the features found in other editions like clustering, BitLocker drive encryption, multipath I/O, Windows Internet Naming Service WINS, Removable Storage Management and SAN Management.
Now that people have covered a little the various different editions of Windows Server 2008 R2 we could now search a little more detail in a feature by feature comparison in the four different editions. This is outlined inside following feature matrix:
Before investing some time to resources into downloading and installing Windows Server 2008 R2, a crucial first step would be to gain an appreciation in the hardware requirements important to effectively run the main system. The following table provides a breakdown of Microsofts recommended minimum hardware requirements:
Minimum: 1.4GHz x64 processor
Note: For Itanium based systems an Intel Itanium 2 processor is necessary.
Maximum: 8GB Foundation 32GB Standard or 2TB Enterprise, Datacenter and Itanium-Based Systems
Note: Systems with RAM over 16GB will demand greater amounts of disk space to fit paging, hibernation, and dump files
As using the specified system requirements for all those Windows systems, it's best to aim for that Recommended values rather compared to Minimum values to be sure acceptable degrees of performance. For example, whilst it is quite possible to run Windows Server 2008 R2 in 512MB of RAM it's unlikely that performance levels are going to be optimal with your a configuration.

Although the merchandise description stated make fish an DVD needs to be shipped in Windows Packaging, what I received was the Windows Server 2012 R2 ISO file by using an opened 8GB SanDisk USB drive, plus a license key that has been printed on regular paper minus the Microsoft Logo. After 4 tries to load the ISO, we still receive ERROR messages if the install reaches 97 percent. The WIM XML file had not been generated correctly. This may have resulted coming from a failed copy of We even extracted the ISO file onto multiple bootable USB drives and received a similar error.
Hopefully, its the ISO file that is certainly corrupted, since we havent were built with a chance to put in the license key provided.
Otherwise, were out almost 7 hundred dollars.

Virtualization, VDI Remote Desktop
With the launch today of Hyper-V - available only in x64 versions - I thought that now will be a good time for it to revisit the main topics 64-bitness.
I m a technical product manager around the Windows Server team devoted to Windows Server 2008, R2, clustering, and power management, in addition to a hardly any other areas. In days gone by I focused read more about our Enterprise, Datacenter, and Itanium editions, in conjunction with x64.
While it could take a while for client computing to achieve the stage where 64-bit may be the norm and 32-bit the exception, on that day is coming soon for servers - and it also may be today. A few quick facts:
x64 processors have already been with us for more than 5 years now.
While I confess I can t read every web page for the AMD, Intel, HP, IBM, and Dell sites, last time I checked all currently shipping servers from major OEMs - and obviously the processors included - were 64-bit.
Microsoft announced when i was younger that Windows Server 2008 could be the last server OS accessible in 32-bit. And let s not disregard the word server there! I m not referring to the desktop. Windows Server 2008 R2 are going to be 64-bit only.
The last time I checked our evaluation download figures, more than half from the downloads were from the x64 edition of Windows Server 2008.
The virtualization highlights of today s processors require 64-bit.
So, why the transition? And why now?
Well, today you are able to buy laptops with 4 GB of RAM. So you'll be able to imagine many servers could probably make full use of more than that. But 32-bit os and processors are limited by addressing 4 GB of RAM. Yes, I know you will find workarounds, but PAE and AWE usually are not our topic today! Two to your thirty-second power is 4, 294, 967, 296 to ensure s each of the bytes you obtain: 4 GB. With 64-bit, we have now support approximately 2 TB of RAM inside our Enterprise and Datacenter editions. Even Standard supports 32 GB.
Databases, computationally-intensive applications, connection-oriented applications for instance Terminal Services or Exchange, and lastly virtualization will probably be among the initial to experience the advantages of 64-bit. You already knew that Exchange 2007 was 64-bit only, understanding that Microsoft has on the dozen server applications easily obtainable in 64-bit today, right? Direct usage of more RAM, plus the ability to store, say, entire databases in RAM in lieu of needing to swap to disk will manage to benefit such applications most. And naturally, twelve virtual machines, each with 2 GB of RAM, requires more over 4 GB within the physical server hosting them.
So why not consider 32-bit? The underlying x64 architecture is dependant on 64-bit extensions towards the industry-standard x86 instruction set. That means almost all of today s 32-bit applications can run natively about the processor without emulation inside our our WOW64 subsystem. There are a few limitations - 32-bit applications with kernel drivers won t install or run.
So if you decide to deploy the 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 and you will! Why deploy to a 32-bit cul-de-sac? you are able to still run nearly all of your existing 32-bit applications while transitioning bit-by-bit to some pure 64-bit future.

In this post we will see how you can upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012. It s been an year that Microsoft has released Windows Server 2012, when Windows Sever 2012 was already released the IT professionals were desperate to know what s new in Windows Server 2012 i was among them. Microsoft releases every one of its os's in multiple editions, which offers consumers with varying price points and show sets. While picking out the edition be sure you choose the edition that meets your requirements. Before we go on and deploy Server 2012, let s consider editions of Windows Server 2012.
1 Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition The Datacenter edition is for large and powerful servers with as much as 64 processors and fault-tolerance features for example hot add processor support. This edition can be obtained only throughout the Microsoft volume licensing program and from original equipment manufacturers bundled which has a server.
2 Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition This is often a fully functional edition of Windows Server 2012. Frankly speaking there's no much difference between Datacenter and Standard Edition of Windows Server 2012. What differentiates these 2 editions will be the number of virtual machine instances that may be permitted because of the license. A Standard edition license will entitle one to run nearly two VMs on around two processors. A Datacenter edition license will entitle you to own an unlimited amount of VMs on around two processors.
3 Windows Server 2012 Essentials The Essentials edition is outfitted for small organizations, this edition includes all the highlights of Standard and Datacenter edition except the Server Core, Hyper-v and ADFS Active Directory Federation Services.
4 Windows Server 2012 Foundation This edition is for small businesses that need only basic server features like file and print services and application support. The edition includes no virtualization rights and is also limited to 15 users.
If i were to upgrade my existing windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise server to windows server 2012 i'd first opt for the edition and then i'd personally check the upgrade paths. I have made a table which shows whether you'll be able to upgrade to windows server 2012 together with you present os.
Lets examine hardware requirements for upgrading our server to windows server 2012. Windows Server 2012 requires a minimum of 16 GB to 32 GB of disk space. When you install Windows Server 2012 it occupies 15.1 GB of space approximately nonetheless its good to allocate atleast 32 GB of drive space for Windows Server 2012. You would require 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor, 512 MB of RAM, 32 GB of disk space, DVD Drive, Super VGA 800 600 or more resolution monitor, keyboard and mouse.
The Windows Server 2012 evaluation software is easily obtainable in Standard and Datacenter editions, you'll be able to download Windows Server 2012 from this point:-
In this post i will probably be showing you the best way to upgrade a windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 to Windows Server 2012 Datacenter. Note that the prevailing server is workgroup, tend not to consider this post to buy some new domain controller to windows server 2012. I will likely be creating a separate post to indicate the upgrade of domain controller running on windows server 2008 r2 to windows server 2012.
On the Windows Setup screen, visit Install now.
If you intend to get security updates and latest drivers for your main system select Go online to set up updates now. We can also execute a windows update in the event the upgrade is finished, so select No, Thanks.
Enter your product or service key for windows server 2012 and select Next. In this step i've got entered server 2012 Datacenter edition key. Click on Next.
Server core installation does not have any Server Manager and other MMCs to handle roles and features. The management should be done either remotely from your client machine or from the command prompt or Powershell for the console. There is no Start menu, no desktop Explorer shell, no Microsoft Management Console, and without any graphical applications. All you see before you start the computer is just one window having a command prompt. In this step i most certainly will select the second installation mode, Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Server which has a GUI. Click on Next.
Select Upgrade: Install Windows and Keep files, settings and applications. This will keep existing files, settings and applications and upgrade our server to windows 2012.
The upgrade will need close to 20 min. Sit back and relax till the upgrade is complete.
The upgrade from windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise to windows server 2012 Datacenter is complete. Let s login for the server and check for your edition.
Click on Server Manager, C lick on Local Server, look at the properties of server. We see that the computer version is Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Datacenter. The upgrade process may be completed successfully.
I am Prajwal Desai and I have already been working inside IT for upwards of 6 years using a strong consentrate on Microsoft Server Technologies. For the last 5yrs, as being a System Administrator I happen to be working on Lync, SCCM, Vmware, VDI, Exchange, Windows Servers etc. Im currently very enthusiastic about everything in connection with Configuration Manager 2012, Lync, Windows Server and Exchange.
Excellent documentation concerning the upgrade, I facing some problem evaluating an upgrade from WIndows 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter Evaluation to Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Evaluation. But the upgrade throws a blunder saying the upgrade just isn't supported as well as a new copy has got to installed. Is upgrade evaluation to evaluation not supported?
and something else, It isn't a physical hardware it really is a Hyper-V VM
The upgrade from evaluation to evaluation isn't supported. You can activate the windows server 2008 R2 first and upgrade to windows server 2012 evaluation.
I AM USING WINDOWS 2008 R2 ENTERPRISE EDITION WHICH WAS A DOMAIN CONTROLLER CAN I UPGRADE THAT SERVER TO WINDOWS 2012 STANDARD EDITION. ANY PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN BEFORE UPGRADING THE SERVER
You is able to do an in-place upgrade of Windows server 2008 R2 SP1 STD/ENT to Windows Server 2012 STD/DC. Note that you have to have Service Pack 1 attached to your Windows Server 2008 R2 first. Upgrading Server Core installing Windows Server 2008 R2 to your Server Core installing of Windows Server 2012 isn't yet supported. Also Windows Server 2012 takes a Windows Server 2003 forest functional level so look at the forest functional level and hang up it to windows 2003 or better than that.
Thanks for that informative posts Prajwal. Months ago we started a tiny project plus it quickly became substantially larger. We use a terminal server which is 2008 R2 Foundation because we felt we may never need more initially. We need also I bought Server 2012 and then we could upgrade in-place and downgrade back in 2008 R2 so we are able to use the other CALs we bought.
I have tried the 2012 along with the 2008 upgrades plus in both cases it tells me it cant be practiced. Am I remiss?
Thanks Prajwal, because of this nice guide!
Can i actually do the update when you described it, if the Server can be a member within a domain not domain controller?
Great post. I am considering knowing for those who have managed to upgrade Windows 2008 AD to windows 2012? As you stated you will likely be posting that article, are you able to please tell me when that ll be?
we've hyper v fail over cluster server, i could upgrade?
Thanks Prajwal, just for this nice guide!
Hi Prajwal Thanks just for this article but are there any article for the best way to upgrade server 2008 R2 Domain controller to Server 2012 with Role transfer? I mean when the we have working domain with server 2008 if I would like to upgrade do you know the correct processes?
Any news within this? I want to upgrade my 2008 R2 DC to WS 2012.
In this post i are going to be showing you the way to upgrade a windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 to Windows Server 2012 Datacenter. Note that the prevailing server was in workgroup, don't consider this post to update your domain controller to windows server 2012. I will probably be creating a separate post showing the upgrade of domain controller running on windows server 2008 r2 to windows server 2012.
Hi Steve, currently little busy with my SCCM project, once I am carried out with that I will post it. Apologies for your delay.
Found this important video for server 2008 R2 Migration to Server 2012 wonderful role transfer and how you can remove your old server: /watch?vxVnPeFZWCC4
In this information u shared a workgroup, in solid practice nobody is going to do like this while you upgraded. If am upgrading my domain controller shall i continue together with the same steps? or I have to go schema update ahead of that?

He continues to be blogging at since 2006, concentrating on manageability, performance, and additional features; is a Microsoft MVP since 1997; tweets as AaronBertrand ; and speaks frequently at user conferences and SQL Saturday events.
Yes it can be! See this post from Peter Saddow:
First, when you have User Access Control 100 % swing, UAC will generate the following prompt to be certain youre okay with SQL Server making changes for a computer:
If you aren't okay on this, obviously, click No, and approach your day as usual. Otherwise, click Yes.
Remember you will want to leave the SQL Server Installation Center running while setup continues. This means you may have two setup icons as part of your taskbar; from the past, Ive attemptedto de-clutter my desktop during setup, only to seek out out which the Installation Center has to be running normally your temporary files will disappear. I were unsatisfied with this issue here, but it will never be addressed with this release:
Next, you'll receive a warning during setup several times; once after you launch, once after you select New SQL Server stand-alone, and maybe through other paths at the same time that only SQL Server 2008 SP1 is supported on your operating-system:
In yesteryear, this dialog has stopped many people in their tracks, since they thought there is a major problem and/or that setup won't allow them continue. Rest assured, you may safely ignore this warning, just make sure to put in SP1 before you decide to do anything. While you might already be seeing it through Microsoft Update, you may download SP1 manually here:
Please ensure you download the proper language for the operating systemSQL Server instance. I have seen a couple of customer complain that they can ran the SP1 installer, however it could not find any components to update, considering that the language wouldn't match. The fact that setup couldnt supply a more helpful error message is the one other issue.
If you're ambitious, you could potentially avoid this warning by slipstreaming your install with SP1 and optionally, post-SP1 cumulative updates. Peter even offers some great blog articles and FAQs within this process:
Whether you slipstream or you cannot, once setup gets to your point where it truly is going to launch the Setup Support Rules screen, you could see this error:
This is due to some Windows 7 alteration of UI dialogs are closed, and is going to be addressed both inside a future 2008 CU along with 2008 R2 see Peters addendum about this concern here. In the meantime, I have found which the problem disappears if I reboot as John Paul Cook brought up earlier, yet not if I simply de-activate setup and initiate over. This likely affects SQL Server 2005 setup likewise, simply because they share precisely the same installation framework; however, if that is the situation, I doubt it will likely be fixed.
John also explains that once you setup SQL Server 2008 initially, omit Books Online, to be a more nearly date version is obtainable here:
Finally, watch this Knowledge Base article, as it can be being updated with the final relieve both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2:
A side note: would you blue screen Windows 7?
Yes it is possible to! I did this today, using only the SQL Server 2008 installer and Task Manager. Here is how I did this, in the VMWare Fusion virtual machine:
I launched setup, but got the Invoke or error from above.
I quit setup plus an instance of SSMS I had open and rebooted.
The Setup Support Rules screen seemed hung, so I opened Task Manager and was surprised to locate an demonstration of SSMS there.
Being impatient, I highlighted and clicked Kill Process.
The dialog I got insinuated that I would lose data. Since I knew I had not opened an type of SSMS, I shrugged and killed the task anyway.
I was immediately presented that has a BSOD, and VMWare quickly recovered by restarting the VM.
This actually hosed my Windows 7 Virtual Machine so that I were required to delete it from inside VMWare Fusion. I would try and start up, and it also sat there frozen. So I deleted it and am rebuilding a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM as I post this it was already released on MSDN/TechNet, and perhaps Connect too, earlier today. I should be able to create snapshots before installing software, but quite honestly this can be by far the worst outcome Ive ever had having a SQL Server install, as well as the VM was obviously a brand new throw-away anyhow.
Many with the same elements submit an application for SQL Server 2008 R2. A handful of additional notes, which are already mentioned before however they are worth mentioning again:
You cannot revert to 2008 tools when you finally install 2008 R2. You can uninstall the 2008 R2 instance, though the client tools is not going to revert back to your previous version. If you currently have SQL Server 2008 client tools installed, you will note this warning for the Installation Rules screen in SQL Server 2008 R2 setup:
You cannot upgrade any existing instance 2008 or otherwise not to R2, because only Enterprise Evaluation is now being offered, and there is absolutely no upgrade path. So, if you have SQL Server installed, you will need to setup a separate instance so that you can play. Probably the safest route for the time being, consider I tried to complete an upgrade, I figured several of you might try it too.
Hope this information is useful.

Thor, yes, firewall configuration could be a hurdle. During setup you happen to be warned about firewall issues, but setup permits you to continue. You can examine this page to determine the way to configure it correctly turning rid of it kind of defeats the reason, even when only temporarily, and infrequently people will forget to show it back on.

When you say: Rest assured, you may safely ignore this warning, just make sure to setup SP1 when you do whatever else.
Are you saying leave the dialog open and install SP1 or Press Run Program, handle the installation, then install SP1?
Carlos, you cant install SP1 prior to deciding to install the bottom product. What I meant was, finish the install, then before doing anything ELSE, install SP1.
Excellent, Thanks. I were built with a feeling, but simply wanted to get 100% sure. Thanks for your fast reply.

Personally, I would install SQL Server then Visual Studio. When installing Visual Studio, ensure that you not install the Express Edition of SQL Server that may be part from the install. If you have an demonstration of SQL Server locally I assume Developer Edition plus there is little reason to incorporate an additional Express instance. You can do things the other way around should you want, but I remember fondly the 2005 versions a real symptom in that case, and I rebuilt one machine for doing this and got word of several other similar stories. Im not certain that I trust most of these issues to get fixed from the 2008 editions.

The following notes pertain to this launch of SQL Server only.
The Reporting Services installation options which you specified in Setup see whether additional configuration becomes necessary before it is possible to access the report server. If you installed the default configuration, the report server may be used immediately. If you installed this system files only, you will need to run the Reporting Services Configuration tool to deploy the report server.
To install the Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint Technologies, start the within the Setup folder around the SQL Server 2008 installation media after SQL Server Setup is complete.

I found your blog by Peter Sadow that is confusing to my clients.
Oliver 14 steps are confusing?
I installed Sql Server 2008 R2 Enterprise over a Windows 7 Professional machine which can be on our network. From two other computers, one running Windows 7 Pro as well as the other running Windows XP Pro, I attempted to connect for the Sqlserver instance with an MS Access 2010 project. After I got for the Access screen to decide on a server, I saw the SQL Servers computer name AMS2-WIN7, nevertheless the instance name AMSSQLSERVER wasn't next to your computer name AMS2-WIN7AMSSQLSERVER had not been there. I tried using exactly the computer name, nevertheless the connection failed on both computers. Any ideas? Thank you

that is naveed from india.
Naveed it sounds that you installed the beds base version of SQL Express, which doesnt include Management Studio. And why are you installing 2008 today anyway and why the x86 version? I suggest using a newer version using a longer support lifetime. At the very least, even when you need to use a 2008 engine for whatever reason, you must be using Management Studio 2012 SP1, and that is free and fully functional without any with the limitations that existed in the past versions of SSMS Express.
Appreciate this post. Let me give it a shot.

it is naveed from india.
Naveed it sounds as you installed the camp version of SQL Express, which doesnt include Management Studio. And why are you installing 2008 today anyway and why the x86 version? I recommend using a modern-day version which has a longer support lifetime. At the very least, even should you need to use a 2008 engine i really enjoy seeing, you must be using Management Studio 2012 SP1, and that is free and fully functional without any in the limitations that existed in the past versions of SSMS Express.

I got another request to reply to yet another media state that technology is not good for our brains. It s actually additionally a good instance of really poor science reporting inside the media, so I won t link it, nevertheless the topic seems generally of interest also it appears being based using a curious underlying folk type of cognition worth contemplating.
How would this work? How could technology make us less smart? The core idea is always that be looking things up, we memorize less and therefore we're less smart than we will be otherwise. But this misses the problem of substitution. If you aren t memorizing something you may look up, will you learn something different instead?
To me, the interesting underlying idea is: Memory doesn t provide an off switch
We are constantly recording experiences from the environment. Of course, not everything gets remembered, so maybe we focus too much for the memory failures. But we aren t consciously turning our memories on and off from the day. So if we are attempting to memorize arbitrary facts that individuals could lookup on google instead, during that time we aren t doing another thing that could have remaining a useful memory trace. Note that I m describing this as a possible attention/perception bottleneck, however it could be described as a memory consolidation level bottleneck at the same time which may perhaps be the actual constraint that keeps us from remembering everything we all experience.
The only way due to this argument to completely make sense is usually to have a strong theory that everything we'd have memorized as opposed to relying online is more significant to our internal knowledge state than everything we learn instead. I think that's going being a hard case to produce. And it won t be about technology.
There s another way to have a possible technology hurts mental performance case according to skill learning/strengthening. If memory is really a skill that could be improved by intensive practice, then concentrated efforts to memorize arbitrary information could theoretically allow you to be better at remembering and also over time, you d just get smarter. But there is absolutely no evidence anywhere that long-term memory might be strengthened by doing this and many people have attemptedto do this.
Working memory looks being trainable, in case anything, technology which makes you hold a question at heart while putting within the search terms to look it down is going to expand your WM instead of causing it to atrophy.
So no, technology just isn't going to produce us less smart. It s almost certain to get overwhelmingly from the other direction the access provided from the internet to incredibly rich and diverse varieties of information means the common knowledge content on the average human brain inside the 21st century is usually a lot more versus the 20th or some other prior time.
I was inspired to answer some questions at a middle school student doing research project on video gaming. Since I am interested inside topic generally, I should probably figure out tips on how to answer most of these questions in an age-appropriate level. My attempt:
1. Do video gaming affect the brain? Do games affect the thought process? Do online games damage the thinking part in the brain?
Yes, game titles can affect the human brain, like whatever else that you perform a lot of. However, these changes can sometimes be for your better. There is recent proof improvements in visuospatial attention how the truth is the world following game play. There may also be changes with the worse, like increasing aggression, but these are certainly not yet well understood.
2. Can game titles improve people s knowledge? Can they help people s grades recover in school? Or can they get bad grades?
Video games probably won t help you at school very much. They can create problems in schoolwork when kids play lots of games and don t sustain homework and assignments. If you might be getting your homework done, winning contests won t hurt and might actually help a small amount.
3. Can online games make people lose time? With friends? Time outside?
If you spend a lot of time on games and don't make time for friends, family, proper exercise and sleep, then that can very likely lead to further problems.
4. Can online games make people sick? Gain weight? Headaches or even a tumor?
Some people report dizziness and nausea upset stomach from games that provides you first person perspective. This is likely related to your kind of motion sickness you'll be able to get when riding inside a car. In rare cases, a lot of people may react badly to flashing lights/sounds in games. In general, games won t allow you to be sick. If you eat in the unhealthy way when playing videogames, that will lead to extra weight and other medical problems.
5. Can video gaming make people enslaved by what their mainly about? How do they accomplish this? Why do people get addicted?
Gaming addiction just isn't well understood. Games aren t addictive the way in which other things are just like cigarettes. However, you will find certainly a number of people who have problems such as 2 and 3 above. They seem to try out so much which it messes up a great deal of other things in their lives. That looks much like being addicted. It also can look as being a lot of other concerns that teenagers often encounter mood swings, depression, difficulty in associated with others. I tend not to think it's well known whether games could cause those problems or whether kids having those varieties of problems for another excuse sometimes like to try out a wide range of videogames.
Thank you very much on your help.
As an exercise for the reader, explain what's incorrect with his complaint that what most of the people think of science is definitely the opposite of science.
Seems being a topic we really should be discussing in 205. I think it s the appropriate level of meta for just a class on experimental design.
For some reason, I ve been receiving a lot of requests lately to spell out why were bad at remembering people s names lately. An email exchange about this with an Atlantic reporter got summarized online here:
Curiously, it then also got picked up on another site, Lifehacker:
And then I was contacted earlier this week and did this short conversation for the phone having a radio show, Newstalk, in Ireland with host Sean Moncrieff.
All the conversations went well, although I m unsure I had much to mention beyond the basics that names are difficult and arbitrary, unlike other facts you have a tendency to learn about people you meet.
A more interesting idea is always that I suspect there is usually a reverse Dunning-Kruger effect for name memory. Dunning-Kruger effects are cases when everybody thinks they can be above average. For names, my sense is that many people think they can be below average. I would guess they aren t, but merely that the vast majority of us can be harmful at names. In theory, it wouldn t be very difficult to test this, but I don t think anybody has even chance a real experiment.
I m an enormous fan of Jerry, who posts to YouTube as ChessNetwork his videos of playing chess online. One in the things he does regularly is playing online speed chess ultra-rapid, bullet chess where each player has 1m for your whole game.
Chess is often a different game if you have a minute to make every move in the whole game. I find it compelling because doing so exposes the absence of calculation in high level chess play. At 1-2 seconds/move, it really is almost purely pattern matching, habit and processes we might have to call intuition. There is no time for anything though the most rudimentary of calculation. And yet the amount of play is quite sharp.
Jerry is extremely entertaining when he keeps up a verbal stream of consciousness patter while playing. He notes positional principles that guide some move selection and the voice offers his excitement audibly when he senses a tactical play coming.
Understanding how such type of cognitive process is accomplished would reveal a lot about human cognitive function. What they are doing here is just not really hard for virtually every chess player with decent playing experience I am decent at bullet chess not like Jerry, but I can start to play. And relevant towards the old post about AI Hofstadter, the truth that computers are unequivocally dominant at chess has nothing regarding understanding how humans play bullet chess.
I ve spoken with chess professionals about speed chess from the past plus the general sense is the fact that playing speed will not likely make you better at chess. But studying and playing chess slow will allow you to be better at speed chess. Perhaps a principle of your practice intuition in complex tasks may be derived from that.

It s actually additionally a good illustration of really poor science reporting inside media, so I won t link it, however the topic seems generally of interest also it appears for being based on the curious underlying folk
