Alex: I guess it s for leaked intermediate builds which aren t on MSDN/Technet, and to produce the check somewhat easier to be a bonus. So maybe this tool will become more useful for Windows 8 since Windows 7 is getting ready to RTM.
Presumably the theory is that a hash of these builds is supplied by some trusted person, or otherwise someone you d trust greater than a file on the random download site.
Personally, I d still avoid installing leaked builds on certainly not a test VM, but maybe I m more paranoid than other individuals.
