Windows XP is practically 14 years of age! Even Microsoft has stopped extended support correctly, even if it's just security updates are issued.
Instead of complaining that your state in the art software doesnt operated with a 14 year-old, obsolete OS, you could should upgrade with a more contemporary OS that Plex does support. Plenty of choices, even some free ones, available.
Im undecided how others have set this up, but this works perfectly on EVERY device I have in your own home - ipad, Roku, iphone, PCs, even TV.
It has very specific NAS specs and theyre slightly pricey however it is worth the investment.

Installed Plex Media Server on Mac together to spend many hours figuring out why I couldnt use whatever media from my laptop. Realized I had to look into their forum for help and posted there. I finally determined it was my local firewall settings that prohibited me from seeing anything around the Plex on Roku. BUT, now the dilemma is that PLEX will not likely playback any Videos from my iTunes library. The customer support, FAQs plus the FORUM are completely useless. Add to which the basic graphical user interface is not very friendly and folders are hard to understand. At least I didnt waste any cash on a premium subscription. Dont waste your time and effort on this useless app.

I are already back and forth with several on the servers, I own both a 360 as well as a PS3 and am running XP, ORB and Simple Center constantly hung and CPU usage skyrocketed. I have not tried TVersity, but recently installed the 30day trial of Twonky, and must say, I like free programs as much because the next guy, but Twonky works being a charm with both PS3 along with the 360 the only real weird caveat being that on the 360 it shows pixel for pixel resolution on my own TV in which the PS3 scales to fill the screen, however it is also a new tv and A/V setup and this also may be caused by the fact that I am running the 360 with the PC input along with the PS3 through HDMI. Anyway, I will give TVersity a fast spin, but unless it runs as quick and with only a small amount overhead as Twonky I am totally planning to pay for this system when my thirty days runs out. I have heard Twonky is just not so great for Macs but on XP it does what you look for a program to accomplish - simply work.

Great comparison, Robert. Just to add my recent experience. Ive been using Mezzmo and Im finding its great. I have a substantial collection of music 60K tracks and Mezzmo handles this real well. Easy-to-organize and also flexible. It streams my music and also the few video and photos I have inside my home with no problems up to now. DLNA and UPnP compliant. Windows only. No transcoding though. Its definitely worth an appearance.

I happen to be playing using a number of DLNA servers for Windows XP. After downloading and installing every conceivable codec. I was capable of download pretty much any movie in a format a stream it to my DirecTV HR-20 set top box making sure that I could watch in my HDTV.I wound up with TVERSITY, but I must say that every one has ups and downs. Still should attempt starts once or twice. The RTSP stuff really still doesnt work nicely. I can start and quit, but no ff, rev or pause. Could be my STB, but at least it can be if I could possibly get faster broadband connection, I can stop gonna Blockbuster.

Great list for reference but VERY strange SimpleCenter: Very easy to set up and run but my C54WMP media player lost skip ahead MediaHome: Couldnt even succeed.I tried TVersity and is particularly was great. Appart from working flawlessly it allowed my C54WMP to study any file that I could read with WMP around my computer. That means suddenly I could monkeys and divx without subtitles which are not supported from the media player.Im perfectly sure there had as a way to make Nero work, but TVersity worked immediately and added formats to my media player - now which would you consider best?I tested them with just one folder packed with different media. Dont determine if any are able to use my full bunch of 500 GB of media.

I cannot offer the Nero Mediahome statement to be Best in class. When I completed it, it crashed frequently and video playback was poor. It stuttered and can not understand many my video Windows, I are actually using TVersity and endorse it particularly for PS3 client usage.

Windows Media Center WMP11 won't really support transcoding, I think. At least I did not find any information into it on the net.I does transcode media once you upload it to cellular devices, but not after you share it above the network.

Although nero media property is very nice, the challenge I have stumble upon with both it and twonky is that if you need to many songs they eventually crash. I do not determine this is true from the other programs, i will try simplecenter next to determine.

Excellent post. I would like to clarify that, just because a server is UPnP compliant, that doesn't mean it truly is DLNA compliant. DLNA specifies other layers of networking which aren't covered by UPnP and also media formats. DLNA performs this to further improve the interoperability between devices.
