UPDATE 1/1/08: I just got a Mac after always previously using Windows. Great news-when I installed this 4.0 software, besides did it work fine, it corrected the two most serious objections I previously had along with it. I are in possession of no problems importing waypoints from my Garmin GPSmap 60CSx, as well as the software is now works with all the states I own in the previous Version 3 software. I have no idea whether it is unique to Mac or if it now works as well with Windows, when I did mobile phone, it automatically went along to the National Geographic website and downloaded a software update. I still provide 4 stars due to some with the other non-standard gui choices, however these are pretty simple to get accustomed to. I didnt modify the rest with the review, so save this update planned as you see clearly.
National Geographic topo maps are wonderful if your understand their strengths and limitations I develop the Nevada version however they all work exactly the same. First, dont expect you'll import the specific maps in to a GPS receiver. These maps are raster-scanned completely from USGS 7.5 topos; GPS receivers use vector-graphic maps which are only available from a receivers manufacturer and they are generally much less detailed than NG maps. But you must not expect your GPS receivers display to fully replace a paper map anyway. Its they canrrrt show much detail, and if the receiver fails, youd be beyond luck. NOTE: Magellan recently introduced the Triton series, and that is the first product meant to import maps from Topo!. This is an incredible advancement, but I havent yet evaluated it to determine how well it functions. Read more

I never have used this device extensively however it had confirmed to be very useful for my tastes. I am very pleased by using it and only have a very couple of comments. It has an excellent search tool and found almost every location that I have searched on, even some not much and very remote campgrounds. This is what I was mainly interested in since the other softwares I have used are extremely VERY limited on this. The only 2 things that I have noticed is that it has fixed zoom ratios and also the wildlife areas that I am thinking about are shaded dark grey when zoomed in and that is somewhat maddening. They could purchase a lighter grey which is very hard to find out the mapping over these shaded areas. That is the only reason I am dropping my rating down to your 4. This product can be quite user friendly and I would recommend it, up to now it has become the best bang for that buck!. Digitizing the trails and creating profiles as well as flyovers is just as slick and simple as could be. The same goes with plotting GPS points from ASCII onto my TOPO maps or at their store.
Thank you for the feedback.

If you'll just mark your route for their maps, go through the elevation profile, print it, etc then this product is excellent.
The problem comes after you realize that the actual USGS quadrangles in many cases are badly outside of date with man-made things, including trails and park boundaries. There is no support for updating the maps from the style from the original. Still, you could make passable updates - - just invent your own personal conventions.
You can merge in someone elses updates - - the challenge comes in case you then have a revised version of these updates. There is no supported method the second merge replace the initial merge while using newer one, as well as to back out the 1st merge to clear out what the 1st merge place in without also removing any updates you may have added in order for the newer merge can be cleanly.
Overall a reliable product. Plain vanilla out-of-the-box stuff works fine. Trying to upgrade the maps to become truly useful to your area could be pretty frustrating, though.
One thing to be wary of: National Geographic is intending to migrate folks for their newer product, TOPO!Explorer. Take a look at that products reviews - - it only gets one star 5 reviews.

This is an effective program with lots of useful features. I use it primarily for hiking and backpacking within the Sierra Nevadas. The excellent quality maps that I can use are perfect make use of in conjunction with my GPS receiver. You cant download the topo maps in the GPSr, but thats okay considering that the GPSr has this type of small screen and I prefer having a paper map on hand when hiking. The program also lets me plot courses along trails and calculate hiking distances. The elevation profile tool has become very handy plus there is an option to add the profile in the bottom of a map list. My only complaint would be that the USGS maps utilised by the program would not have all from the trails that other paper maps include however, Ive found a couple of trails in this particular program that arent on many of my other paper maps. I also save waypoints and courses to your file which I are able to import into Google Earth to have a better feel for terrain and vegetation. I provide 4/5 Star because it isn't perfect see above complaint nevertheless it is close. Overall, I endorse this program for everyone who is enjoys hiking in Californias mountains.

Update 11/28/2011 Seamless Topo Maps - I have released a seamless version devoid of the map borders version on the USGS Topographic Map layer for Google Earth. In addition to taking out the map borders, hill shading has become added while using 10-meter National Elevation Dataset NED, which greatly raises the topography and makes it possible to find out the 3D effects when you use Google Earth in off-line mode. Given the timeframe required to create this layer, as well as the server resources required, I will be charging a compact fee to download the seamless maps. Making the maps readily available for download allows me to produce them offered at a higher resolution than I would be capable of otherwise. See the Seamless Topographic Maps for Google Earth page for more info. A number of screenshots are below.
USGS Topographic maps provide detailed information including land use, feature names, the locations of natural features, and topographic elevation contours. There are 50, 000 7.5-minute topo maps within the entire United States except Alaska, that is covered inside a larger scale. The topographic maps come in a very variety of scales, with all the most detailed typically being the 7.5-minute version, meaning each map covers a space of 0.125 x 0.125 degrees. This number of maps allows you to easily view all 50, 000 in the 7.5-minute USGS topographic maps in Google Earth.
The maps with this collection typically date from around 1978 to 2005. The USGS is continually updating the topographic maps plus it seems to drive them about fifteen to twenty years to obtain around to updating every individual map. I also have a very separate bunch of Historic USGS Topographic maps for Google Earth.
Each topographic map has become converted into a single Google Earth KMZ file, which can be typically about 1-5 megabytes. The maps add some collars borders, that contain information like the date from the map plus the source with the data found for the map.
The topo maps are accessed with a very simple index. Just zoom in till the blue and green outlines become visible. Then click around the box with the Topographic map you would like to view to take up the balloon with some info on the map and also a View Map button. Click about the View Map button and after several seconds where it is going to look like absolutely nothing is happening, the map will be in Google Earth.
Once the map loads, you should use the use the topo maps together with the many other features incorporated with Google Earth, including:
The speed where the maps load will depend for the speed of your respective Internet connection and also the speed of my sponsor. When the map is loading, it may resemble nothing is happening for just a few seconds. But when your on a reasonably fast Internet connection, the map should appear after about 10-60 seconds.
To get going, first ensure you have Google Earth installed. Then just click about the button below to load the KML file to the Places folder of Google Earth.
The Topographic Maps can easily be embedded into the own website with all the Google Earth Plugin. The first step on this process is always to determine the URL from the map you are thinking about. To determine the URL, chose the map you wish to embed and write down the map code found within the pop up balloon. For this example, we shall use o37122g4, and that is San Francisco North California. The URL of your respective map may be determined by replacing the o37122g4 map code using your map code inside URL below.
Next, visit and paste the URL for ones map to the box at the top with the page provide time to load it. Click several buttons and also you ll have your embed code, which could be put on your own web site with results a lot like below.
