This is often a review from the hardcover dictionary only; I did not buy the CD. I have a more mature edition paperback American Heritage dictionary, but wanted a hardcover desk reference that's more comprehensive, without buying one of those massive, all-encompassing tomes that I could hurt my back looking to use.
I considered three dictionaries - the American Heritage College dictionary, the Merriam Webster Collegiate dictionary, along with the Oxford American Desk Dictionary. I compared some definitions, the paper quality, and page layout font size, spacing, etc.
All three dictionaries seem to obtain good definitions - the wording varies, naturally, for every one. The Oxford seemed to possess the most direct, straightforward definitions, but lacked secondary definitions or didnt have several word usageword history tidbits which I like, but which admittedly usually are not essential since the American Heritage.
Paper quality per is good, even though the Merriam Websters page brightness became a little dim in my opinion - Oxford and American Heritage pages were the ideal brightness, making all pages seem more crisp and easy to learn.
I appreciate the page layout with the American Heritage - clear, nicely-spaced font that may be easy about the eyes and makes reading wonderful to view. I didnt contain the problem some have mentioned with regards to words running to the spine - just tilt the head a little, and you can look at definitions okay. Oxford page layout is likewise nice; reading Merriam-Webster offered me a headache because things are scrunched together - spacing between lines is woefully inadequate, i believe.
In sum, the American Heritage is usually a quality midsize dictionary. Oxford is usually nice. Merriam-Webster didnt cut it in my opinion.

I purchased this book to be a gift for any high school graduate going to college. I have been teaching college English for thirty-three years, and still have been requiring my English Composition students to acquire it because the first edition was released. The definitions and resources with this book are startlingly clear; the Usage Panel notes of previous editions contain wonderful discussions in the majority opinions of any panel of experts on complex usage questions that baffle many of us every day. The American Heritage Dictionary will be the most reliable definer of American English the way it is used today, and I treasure its reliablity and accuracy. No home needs to be without it. I havent viewed the CD Rom included with this edition, nevertheless it is probably as superb as it itself with the computer generation leading us in the future. I prefer pages and wanderings.
