Im seeking Solaris 10 x86 64 bit OS. I downloaded one from OTN and appearently it can be 32 bit. Can anybody make me aware where to download 64 bit version?
Oracle Solaris 10 x86 2, 009, 606, 091 bytes md5sum: cb55f4b7af194f6378aa5f304f3ea8fc
Starting together with the Solaris 10 3/05 release, packaging continues to be simplified using the delivery on most 32-bit components and 64-bit components within a package. The combined packages keep the names from the original 32-bit packages, along with the 64-bit packages are not delivered.
Reduces the quantity of packages, which simplifies Custom JumpStart scripts that incorporate lists of packages
If a 64-bit package incorporates a 32-bit counterpart, the 64-bit package is named while using 32-bit package name. For example, a 64-bit library including 1 previously would are actually delivered in SUNWcslx, the good news is is delivered in SUNWcsl. The 64-bit SUNWcslx package is not delivered.
If a package doesn't need a 32-bit counterpart, the x suffix is removed in the name. For example, SUNW1394x becomes SUNW1394.
This change implies that you might have to modify your custom JumpStart script or some other package installation scripts to eliminate references to your 64-bit packages.
Please told me if this helps.

Im trying ti install on Virtualbox machine. When I created machine I selected the Solaris10 10/9 and then 64 bit. But when I start the installer it mentions 32 bit. Is this OK or it's going to only install 32 version.?
Please observe that mu guest is win XP 32 bit and I have enabled vt-x.
The installation process is really a 32-bit function.
It take fewer resources thereby goes faster.
That installation will put in a 64bit OS when the process detects a hardware configuration that could run such.
Since youre repeating this to a VM, just go ahead and undertake it.
After cellular phone is complete, utilize isainfo command to discover what you get.
Thanks rukbat. Yes it showed 64bit OS after installation.
Even I did a similar thing. I have installed precisely the same package on 64 bit hardware and after runing this command isainfo its output is amd64 i386. So does this suggest OS is 64 bit or Hardware is 6 Bit.
This show that the hardware is 64-bit. To check if your existing kernel runs in 64-bit, you will need to run exactly the same command though with - kv option.

Linux compatibility, ZFS file system as well as other promised features not really available
For Sun customers, upgrading to Solaris 10 can be quite much a no-brainer, and then for several really good reasons. To start with, its faster than any previous Solaris implementation, which has a slick new IP stack one among many performance enhancements. Plus itРІs additional secure, with a new integrated cryptographic framework based about the Trusted Solaris product. The Role Based Access Control RBAC technology, introduced several releases back, has been extended to provide fine-grained treatments for both users and operations, while applications and services can be isolated inside their own virtual execution space using Solaris Containers formerly N1 Grid Containers.
There are some notable advances within the availability front too, including predictive self healing, which enables the OS to recognize and automatically live through a range of hardware and software faults. And for developers thereРІs a whole new integrated debugging tool called DTrace that lets programmers and system administrators see exactly whatРІs taking while applications are executing. Solaris 10 also sees the state release of JDS 3.0, SunРІs Gnome-based Java Desktop System, plus the resurrection of support for your x86 platform in addition to SunРІs own UltraSPARC processors. Moreover, Sun has opted to generate Solaris 10 readily available for free download and, with claims being able to operate Linux applications natively for the new OS, is clearly setting up a play for your corporate open source market. Unfortunately itРІs now that the Solaris proposition sets out to lose many of it lustre. Yes, you are able to download and handle the installation just like Red Hat or SuSE Linux, but there the similarities end, making Solaris 10 a great deal less of an obvious selection for companies trying to find a Linux alternative.
To start with, itРІs crucial that you understand that youРІre still dealing which has a proprietary OS here. Sure, you'll be able to download and run it free of charge if youРІve time and bandwidth to download all four CD-ROM images!, but the whole open source release is not likely to appear for a long time. And although Sun is keen to exert support with the whole gamut of x86 platforms, such as latest 64-bit AMD and Intel processors, lacking all those open source developers churning out code shows that hardware compatibility isnРІt as universal as it truly is with most Linux distributions. We tried installing the software with a number of different systems - - from older Pentium III-based PCs on the latest and greatest Xeon server hardware - - and experienced a lot of basic compatibility problems. These ranged from your clash between install program as well as the CD-ROM drive to - - where we can easily get that to operate - - a dysfunction to recognise the network or storage adapters being employed. We also experienced crashes whenever using USB devices and in many cases had problems installing Solaris 10 within a virtual machine environment. However, we did end up with it to work together with the latest VMware Workstation 5 release which supplies specific if unsupported Solaris support.
The famed Linux compatibility, dependant on a technology called Janus, doesnРІt quite live around expectation either. In its favour, Janus provides compatibility on the kernel level, allowing it to look at full benefit from all the additional features - - including container virtualisation. It also allows Linux applications to perform natively with minimal performance overheads. Unfortunately the primary release has limitations to handling 32-bit applications, with compatibility only guaranteed for code written for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3. Worse still, Janus isnРІt yet included as standard within the Solaris download, along with features slated for inclusion in addition have been left out in the first production release. Most notable from the latter will be the Zettabyte File System ZFS, and that is designed to simplify storage management in large enterprises. On the plus side, the Sun software now doesnРІt cost anything and security updates will also be free to download. You can buy support for many platforms direct from Sun at a cost that compares well with Red Hat as well as other enterprise Linux distributions, and theres a lot of good documentation being had, both embedded inside package additionally, on Suns Web site. Sun went further on the Linux route and bundled Apache, Tomcat, MySQL along with applications featuring its OS in addition to StarOffice 7 for desktop deployment.
Despite pretty much everything, however, Solaris 10 has to become viewed as a proprietary product best implemented on Sun hardware, whether it's UltraSPARC or one in the AMD Opteron-based x86 boxes. Strides are actually made towards embracing the Linux model, and a receptive source implementation is promised. But itРІs not here yet, and Sun includes a long way to look before it could claim to provide exactly the same wide platform support thats available in the top Linux vendors. So if youРІre a Sun customer, then go for it. Otherwise stick to Linux before the bugs are already ironed out also it does exactly what it says within the tin.

Default hash is crypt dependant on DES which will no longer considered secure. This sets the password encyption to linux style md5 hash as default.
Once this is successfully done, md5 hashes from linux could be directly copied to solaris
md5 aka cryptsunmd5 - md5 but more immune to brute force attacks, thus not appropriate for bsd and linux
This will not be a security recommendation, but a majority of people may wish consistency between solaris and linux systems.
In Solaris 8 9 its strongly suggested to keep the default root shell as/sbin/sh because bash links to libraries which could possibly be within a/usr/lib that may be nfs mounted or in a very partition that's failed. But in Solaris 10, every one of the standard libraries are in/lib and Solaris 10 automatically falls back to/sbin/sh if your root shell or sudo fails.
