Cast overview, first billed only:
2001 is really a story of evolution. Sometime within the distant past, someone or something like that nudged evolution by placing monolith on Earth presumably elsewhere during the entire universe too. Evolution then enabled humankind to achieve the moons surface, where an additional monolith can be obtained, the one that signals the monolith placers that humankind has evolved that far. Now a race begins between computers HAL and human Bowman to attain the monolith placers. The winner will attain the next step in evolution, whatever which can be. Written by Larry Cousins

For anybody to dismiss 2001: A Space Odyssey as boring the doctor has to have no fascination with science, technology, philosophy, history and the art of film-making. Finally I understand why most Hollywood productions are very shallow and vacuous - they understand their audience.
Thankfully, people who cannot appreciate Kubricks accomplishment will still be a minority. Most viewers can see the intelligence and sheer virtuosity that went to the making on this epic. This may be the film that place the science in science fiction, as well as depiction of space travel and mankinds future remains unsurpassed presently. It was up to now ahead of its a pointer that humanity still hasnt swept up.
2001 is primarily a technical film. The reason it's slow, and full of minutae happens because the aim would have been to realistically envision the near future of technology along with the past, inside awe inspiring opening scenes. The films greatest strength is from the details. Remember that once this film was created, man still hadnt got out for the but there it truly is in 2001, and thats exactly the start from the journey. To create this type of incredibly detailed vision of the long term that 35 years later it's still the very best we have is beyond belief - I still cant work out how many of the shots were done. The films only notable mistake was the optimism that it predicted mankinds technological and social development. It is our shame which the year 2001 failed to look such as the film 2001, not Kubricks.
Besides the incredible tricks, camera work as well as set design, Kubrick also is definitely the viewer with numerous food for considered what it method for be human, and the location where the human race is certainly going. Yes, the ending is weird and hard to know - but thats the character of the long run. Kubrick and Clarke have started the duty of envisioning it, now its up to your audience to carry on. Theres no neat resolution, no definitive full stop, because then the target audience could stop thinking following your final reel. I know thats what most audiences often want right now, but Kubrick isnt about to let us off so lightly.
Im glad to view that this film is within the IMDB top players films, simply wish it were even higher. Stanley Kubrick is just about the very finest film-makers the world population has known, and 2001 his finest accomplishment. 10/10.

SIR ARTHUR C. CLARKE 1917-2008 wrote the novel and co-authored the screenplay for 2001: A Space Odyssey. He has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, and he could be the only science-fiction writer being nominated with the Nobel Peace Prize. His fiction and nonfiction have sold in excess of one hundred million copies on the net worldwide.
Whats this? This 1982 book that contains 55 chapters along with an epilog, by Sir Arthur C. Clarke who said for years that the sequel was clearly impossible, is often a hybrid book given it attempts not merely to be a sequel to his previous novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, published in 1968 but in addition attempts for being a sequel for the 1968 movie generally known as 2001: A Space Odyssey.
In this novel, a joint Russian-American space mission is sent on the planet Jupiter about the spaceship called Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov to attempt to discover what happened for the previous American spaceship called Discovery that's sent previously in 2001. As well, Leonovs crew is to discover the alien artifact otherwise known as the monolith encountered by Discovery, also to investigate it towards the maximum extent possible.
Because this book attempts to get a sequel for the previous novel plus the 1968 movie, it draws four a variety of readers:
iv whoever has read the earlier novel and possess seen the 1968 movie as I have.
1 Those who have not look at the previous movie or are yet to seen the 1968 movie will delight in this novel. Reading the earlier novel or seeing the 1968 movie is just not needed to understand why novel. There is good character interaction as there are both known and speculative space science throughout. I reread this novel for your third time recently and enjoyed it just as much as I had the primary two times. 2001 is much more famous along with the movie is a lot better known, but 2010 is my personal favorite sci-fi book outside Clarkes Rendezvous with Rama.
My fascination with learning about our solar system exploded looking at this novel. It is incredibly intriguing, you may visualize Jupiter and its particular moons in close proximity, however you really are just dying to determine them yourself. I feel like its this sort of tease, this is as close as I are ever going to get to extraordinary king in our solar system.
The descriptions of Europa will still be highly accurate and you also cant help but wonder how true the novel might sometimes be. The ending was fantastic and quite unexpected, I really didnt notice coming.
What makes 2010 great I guess could be the pacing. If there is any semblance of the slow part, it could be the beginning. After that this novel will take off and cannot be placed down.
Best of the, 2010 doesn't have any from the mindbending trippy issues that was for the end of 2001. I was quite thankful for the.
2061 and 3001 are good reads, but it really is 2010 that stands higher than the rest in Clarkes spectacular four part odyssey. I doubt you will be disappointed, in case you liked 2001, I guarantee you wont be disappointed.

2010 brings the approach of the second Cold War between United States and Russia, and on the same time, a difficulty is raised if the Discoverys orbit is decaying and risks a collision on Jupiters moon, Io. Heywood Floyd, the director from the Discovery mission in 2001, is distributed on the Russian ship Alexei Leonov to help you stabilize the doomed space station. His other mission objectives would be to solve the mysteries between HAL 9000s malfunction along with the status of David Bowman following the encounter with TMA-2, or Big Brother, a gargantuan version in the monolith found within the Moon. And even more questions develop if your Chinese ship Tsien comes in contact with life on Europa.
The characters have become believable, by good lines from Max. Not to worry, said Max cheerfully. All that will be gone whenever you wake up. Its-what can you say?-expendables. Well eat a room empty as soon as you need it. I promise. He patted his stomach. pg. 31 The plot develops very rapidly, with strange new conflicts atlanta divorce attorneys section. The author also gives excellent descriptions of what might be true behind many planets and moons secrets. The core of Jupiter, forever beyond human reach, became a diamond as big because Earth. pg. 190
Clarke tells the tale very well, and everything seems to circulate evenly, quite the despite my expectations. This book isn't boring, and definately will keep you reading until your vision bleed or perhaps you finish the novel, no matter which comes first. The ending is just not at all sudden, and yes it leaves the story plot wide open for additional. Of course, Clarke has gotten advantage with this fact from the sequel 2061, but thats beyond this review. This can be a must-read for virtually every Sci-Fi fan.

In the setting of 2001, Clarke introduced us in an advanced civilization that helped Earths dumb apes evolve numerous years ago into modern humans by teaching them tips on how to kill prey. Im interested in these mysterious characters lurking inside background. They, like us, evolved from ocean slime, then into intelligent, self-aware carbon-based beings like us, then into living machines, last but not least into organized states of one's. Then the audience suddenly translated into modern days. Humans, developing powerful artificial intelligent life, are for the cusp of using the next evolutionary leap. This, post-Darwinian evolution, 's what 2001 is REALLY about. 2010 continues the devlopment in this theme whenever we learn in the lost astronauts fate. He has been ascended with the avanced beings in a being of their time. Still, the topic of the post-Darwinian evolution might mean to us inside the near future will not be really developed in any respect.
On another hand, a magazine I recently read and recommend, Beyond Future Shock by Alaniz, accumulates where Clarke coldly left off. Like 2001, it is usually a strong science fiction book. Starting in WWI, tracking the lives, romances, struggles and triumphs of various infant Germans who can live through WWII, the Cold War, and into your age of youth cocktails when these students are in their late 90s, Alaniz tracks the science behind the arrival transhuman age with masterful, subtle Clarkian writing. He also tracks the possibility perils, as well as the problem of Luddism and religion versus science. As you sink deep into Alanizs powerful imagery, you can find yourself planning on mankinds various potential fates inside the coming ages: some horribly dystopian some reasonably utopian. Singularity look at new book by Kurzweil will be upon for us.
For me, Alaniz has finished genius what Clarke only touched upon in 2001. I am fully sastisfied at long last.

A space mission that might reveal mans destiny is jeopardized using a malfunctioning shipboard computer. A dazzling journey that tops all of them - - and showed the way in which for other effects-packed films that followed.
When Stanley Kubrick recruited Arthur C. Clarke to collaborate for the proverbial intelligent science fiction film, its a safe and secure bet neither the maverick auteur nor the fantastic science fiction writer knew they'd virtually redefine the parameters with the cinema experience. A daring experiment in unconventional narrative inspired by Clarkes short story The Sentinel, 2001 can be a visual tone poem barely 40 minutes of dialogue in the 139-minute film that charts an incredible history of human evolution. From the dawn-of-man discovery of crude but deadly tools inside the films opening sequence for the journey in the spaceship Discovery and metaphysical birth in the star child at films end, Kubricks vision is meticulous and precise. In keeping using the directors underlying theme of dehumanization by technology, the notorious, seemingly omniscient computer HAL 9000 has more warmth and personality compared to the human astronauts it supposedly is serving. The director also leaves the meaning on the black, rectangular alien monoliths open for discussion. This theme, partially, is really what makes 2001 a motion picture like hardly any other, though dated seeing that its postmillennial space exploration has proven optimistic as compared to reality. Still, the film is timelessly provocative in their pioneering search for inner- and outer-space consciousness. With spectacular, painstakingly authentic tricks that have stood the exam of time, Kubricks film are few things less over a cinematic milestone-puzzling, provocative, and ideal. -Jeff Shannon

In regards on the uneducated 2.35:1 zealot reviewer, as being a Director of Photography, I can state unequivocally that 2001 is supposed to become in 2.20:1 aspect ratio. It was shot into two.20:1. It was not shot in Cinemascope or anamorphic Panavision, and that is 2.35:1. It was shot with straight lenses in Super Panavision 70 65mm negative, 70mm projection print with soundtrack. Super Panavision 70 is usually a 2.20:1 aspect ratio format. When you might be watching a 70mm print in the theater you happen to be watching 2.20:1, that has been never as wide as being the anamorphic formats. Learn your aspect ratios.
Not to say the fact that Kubrick went towards the extraordinary effort of exposing his computer graphics composite shots as successive passes within the original undeveloped 65mm negative after it being held sometimes in refrigeration for up to some year or higher waiting for your next pass so that each of the composite visual elements are first generation within the original camera negative, rather compared to the cheaper plus more common optical composite dupe negative inserts. Amazing. That is why it's as good as it can. No optical negative generations.
A Beautiful one of the very best executions with the 70mm format ever.
A true Visual Masterpiece.

Two mysteries keep a wide range of folks from making sense in this movie: 1. What could be the nature with the monolith? What, finally, should it do, or portend, or symbolize? 2. What, specifically, causes HAL to behave such apparently irrational and pointlessly destructive ways aboard Discovery One?
If you cant answer these questions, then 2001, as beautiful as it really is to look at, will give you scratching the head. Well, with deep respect toward all who admire this excellent movie, sufficient reason for awareness these particular issues have, partly, been successfully addressed by other Amazon reviewers, Id love to elaborate on the two of these questions.
First, the monolith. As most Amazon reviewers understand, the extra-terrestrial monolith serves to assist life evolve. This isnt explained by anyone from the movie, but it really is clearly demonstrated. In The Dawn Of Man segment, the ape touches the monolith and experiences a cognitive discovery when he suddenly understands the benefits of tools for survival. The scientists who obtain the moon-based monolith can't predict about the apes original exposure on Earth. They cant take their discovery in context, and, proceeding because of this nearly complete ignorance, they send an exploratory spaceship to check out the monoliths radio signal to Jupiter.
Because additional monoliths appear in visually fabulous settings toward the films end, some viewers believe the monoliths function becomes ambiguous and even deliberately impossible to be aware of. But there is no real need to succeed in for heavy symbolism. The movie definitely makes the most sense if your monoliths role stays the identical: it facilitates evolution wherever seems like.
On to HALs aberrant behavior. At first, this seems a substantially deeper mystery. Read more

In the summer months of 1969, when I was all ten years old, Mom Dad bundled all us kids into your white Oldsmobile stationwagon and drove on the Rockville Maryland Drive-In to find out 2001: A Space Odyssey. I didnt know much regarding the film, but being a budding sci-fi fan I was already champing on the bit to discover it. Needless to say, 2001 rearranged my universe. I cant say I understood the movie completely in the time, but I do recall talking my parents ears off concerning the film throughout the drive home.
2001 is personally one of the best movie of the time. Ive seen it more times than I can count, purchased the soundtrack many times vinyl and tape need replacing, you already know, read Arthur C. Clarkes novelization a couple of times, and focus every other little bit of literature regarding the film Ive had the capacity to get my mitts.
And recently my partner Greg purchased this Stanley Kubrick Collection DVD from Amazon, also it was just last week that we sat to watch it on our new 32-inch TV as well as in 5.1 digital sound. What a treat! First of all of the print is all about as pristine as anything Ive seen; this movie probably looks better today on DVD pc did in several suburban movie theatres way back in 1969. I was immediately struck my how sharp the whole picture was, particularly the clean lines in the monolith that appears mysteriously amongst our australopithicine ancestors 4.5 million in the past. While watching this film yesterday evening, Greg lamented the belief that kids today who get older on merely CGI effects in science fiction movies may didn't a true appreciation to the fine art of model-building; the Orion shuttle, the Discovery ship and its particular attendant space pods, are stunning samples of elegance in design. More than 9000 old games to download free of charge!
This is amongst the most original puzzle games ever designed, and my favs Apple II game. The objective here should be to escape from Robotropolis, a risky underground robotic city. To escape, you need to program your robots to unravel various mind-bending logic puzzles.
The game boasts one of the very best on-line tutorials Ive ever seen within a game. It is some ways such as the programming puzzle in Sierras Castle of Dr. Brain, only far more fun- and difficult. There is IMHO no better solution to learn mathematical logic than the game:
I loved farmville. Still have it yet still have the Tandy 1000 that I played it on. Of course I had those wonderful Radio Shack Tandy joysticks.
I still use a working Coco II. Isnt history great?
How to complete fine movement with a computer with no numpad?
Does anyone kow the way to get beyond the skyway puzzle odd before even i order? This would be the four buttons. I tried 1, 3, 2, 4 both with just barely touching each button so it will be quick is actually touching each prior to the robots bumper hits. Maybe I ought to hit start with a different time or Any help can be great!!!
I played this on my own 64kb trs80 coco, my first computer.
i miss the old times of computing, i hope to possess this running tonight, returns so many memories.
Any idea the way to do fine movement in Boxer for Mac? I cant apparently get everything to work
Yes, secure the left and right shift buttons down when using keypad numbers for fine movement with numlock on; doesnt work while using numbers on top of the letters with your keyboard.
For fine movement try holding both shift keys left and right with the same time and move. I think that operates if I remember right.
scratch that last comment of mine. the slow movement is okay as long as you employ a keypad and numlock is turned off
Does other people have the problem to be unable to try and do fine movement on this game? As far as I can tell from Google, youre expected to hold down Cntrl and rehearse the arrow keys. But doing that only causes the arrow recommendations for not work in any respect! Ive tried Shift-arrow also - no luck. Im running this in DosBox over a Windows 7 machine. Everything else may seem to work fine. Love farmville - havent played since I would have been a kid!
why should i go to your comment box?
Heard about the bingo through a post. Thought Id give it a try.
Awesome Game, just read an assessment about it, must download.
Probably the best game Ive ever played. Amazingly advanced for its a pointer. Looking back upon it - they effectively turned object-oriented programming in a point and click on puzzle solving adventure. You can watch this course run in real-time with lines changing color since the states change.
Theres a good debugger from the form from the Innovation Lab.
Thanks guys. This is great stuff.
Cool game. Program robots with digital logic to exit a compilation of mazes.
