My aunt called me straight into repair her desktop and computers. Level up! You become: The Familys Private IT.
The desktop wasnt much; just many, many junk programs that her daughter had put there.
The laptop, stood a completely corrupted partition, which has a nice BSOD a web based business to start Windows. I had no choice but to reinstall Windows. My aunt had two discs available for some obscure reason. One would have been a Windows Xp Home Premium OEM installation disc in the paper pouch without the key, along with the other, in those large cardboard packages they sold Windows Xp with, was obviously a Windows Xp Professional disc plus a product key, similar to the real ones.
But not an installation disc. Update written about the disc. I thought maybe laptop started out with Home Premium and therefore the Professional update was applied to upgrade it, but nope. The Professional disc, I guess, is perfect for installing service packs or something that is. On whoever knows what computer. When asked, she swears no disc was included with the computers, and he or she had not a clue where these discs might are derived from.
Anyway, at this time her computer gets the Home Premium OEM I placed on it, with no key. thirty days remaining, blah blah.
This computer was obviously a Dell. Was. She purchased it at a place where they take broken computers, replace some parts, and then sell them refurbished. This means there is absolutely no Recovery partition. There wouldnt considerably room for such a thing anyway, for this 60 GB disk drive.
So my only choice is to obtain the right OEM disc and reinstall it with all the key about the sticker under laptop. So I thought I was planning to just download an ISO and burn it, however I saw this.
Apparently, for Windows 8, you will find loads of ISOs, and just one can do depending about the code inside BIOS.
This guide perceived to sort of indicate it will be the same for Windows Xp, when they advise to confirm some numbers inside BIOS which has a bootable USB key. If there were just one OEM, why would they care?
But searching, searching, searching, I just cant put my mitts a list of ISOs to select from. Its like theres just one ISO all things considered.
So, before I visit her home and continue to install having a disc that wont work, please inform me there really is only one ISO, and this it wont go awry. Or let me know where I can chose the list available.
Also, many ISOs say SP3. Does a Windows Xp Professional license alter from a Windows Xp Professional SP3 license? If so, how do I really know what Service Pack none, 1, two or three the product key within the tag is supposed to get?
Before Vista, when you get any OEM media and install using OEM key, it ought to work. Some keys do differ by service pack, but I guess keys for your older service packs should work using the newer ones. Jan 19 13 at 1:47
What you desperately want to find is usually a nice dark blue CD with written upon it OPERATING SYSTEM ALREADY INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER Reinstallation CD Microsoft windows XP professional Service Pack 3. That one does not need any key. Or the SP2 which will certainly be a green CD. I have not a clue where to legally discover them, apart from from Dell. Hennes Jan 19 13 at 1:51
Should you discover their whereabouts somewhere shady, then look into the MD5 with the ISO to make certain it has never been tampered with. It must be MD5:
Why have you been linked to articles dealing with Windows 8. Anything regarding Windows 8 DOES NOT connect with Windows XP. My suggestion obtain a Windows 8 or Windows 7 license and stay done from it. Ramhound Jan 19 13 at 3:40
You must be able to use any unbranded OEM copy of Windows XP not Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. to reinstall Windows XP Professional using the product or service key through the sticker around the bottom in the laptop.
Note you will want to use an OEM disc, not really a Retail or VL volume license disc.
For your purposes, there isn't any difference between Windows XP, and Windows XP with Service Pack 1, two or three, though for security reasons you need to install a duplicate of XP which include Service Pack 3 before connecting laptop computer to the Internet.
Since XP adjusted end of life, OEM product keys may be activated above the Internet again.

Outside of XP, that is my favorite version of Windows as it can be easy to use whilst still being compatible with everything I use. Good price here at the same time.
Windows 7 could be the best Windows OS out there right this moment. Outlet PC would be the best location to buy anything PC related. These guys are fast, knowledgeable, and courteous.
Due to legacy apps at your workplace, Im still bound to Windows. I had to obtain the professional edition because for a few stupid reason Microsoft thought we would not let Home Premium support 32GB of RAM, which I need with the apps.

One in the cool features in Windows 7 is XP Mode. However, its only intended for Windows 7 Professional and above, leaving Home Edition and Vista users at a complete loss. Today well provide you with how to make your own XP Mode running on Vista or Windows 7 Home Premium.
Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows Vista are certainly not licensed to operate the free XP Mode download from Microsoft. In fact, when you purchase Home Premium for the XP Mode download site, you'll see the following message:
However, if you might have a legal copy of Windows XP, then you can definitely easily recreate XP Mode while using free VMware Player. This article will demonstrate how quick and easy it's to receive a virtual copy of XP running on any computer, even though its running 7 Home Premium or Windows Vista.
First, download and install VMware Player link below. It is often a free download, but requires registration.
You may even see some prompts about installing drivers; simply approve them. We didnt discover their whereabouts on our latest test, but have from the past. When you might be finished installing VMware Player, you'll need to restart your laptop.
Once your personal computer is rebooted, begin VMware Player and insert your Windows XP CD within your CD drive. In this example we used a duplicate of Windows XP Professional, but it really would work a similar with any edition of XP.
In VMware Player, follow the link at the top that claims Create a New Virtual Machine.
VMware automatically detects your Windows XP CD, and says it can install it with Easy install. This will let you install XP with only 5 clicks! Click Next to continue.
Now enter your XP product key, and name and password of your liking. We named it XP Mode to produce it obvious what this virtual machine is perfect for!
Here VMware will automatically enter your systems name along with the default location to save the files. Simply press beside accept the defaults, or change them if you want.
You can make how large you would like your virtual disk drive to be; the default is 40Gb, but you can select a different size if you want. Please note that this entire 40Gb won't be taken up on your harddrive. Our clean install only began 1.4Gb about the computer.
Thats every one of the settings. You can review making changes here, or perhaps press Finish to get started on installing XP.
From here on, VMware will need over. You do not must click everything else until XP is fully installed! It will automatically run the installer, format the virtual hard disk,
Copies XP files to the harddrive,
And finishes the install.
Everything is fine automatically, to help you literally get forced out unattended while its installing. In our tests it took about 20 minutes to fit. When its done, the information presented together with the Windows XP desktop ready in order to use!
VMware Player will automatically launch the VMware Tools installer to integrate your virtual XP with the computer. It may must download or update the instruments, if you see the yellow banner at the end of your window then click Update Tools or Install Tools based on you situation.
The tools will automatically download and install, though you could have to approve an UAC prompt.
Once the various tools are downloaded or updated, they must automatically run in XP. If not, click Start, then My Computer, last but not least double-click about the CD drive that should say VMware Tools.
Now, simply run the Tools installer while using Typical setup type, and reboot XP when its finished.
Now your XP is fully installed and setup, so you're able to proceed to integrate using your computer exactly like XP Mode!
The real advantage with the default XP Mode in Windows 7 is the XP programs are fully integrated because of their Windows 7 counterparts. You can run them seamlessly with programs, copy bewteen barefoot and shoes, and in many cases open and save files to exactly the same folders.
Lets set this up in VMware. Copy and paste from Windows 7 or Vista to XP in VMware is activated automagically. To make use of XP programs seamlessly with Windows 7, click VM around the top in the VMware window, and then click Enter Unity.
You can certainly access any program or file in XP mode by way of a dedicated XP Mode Start Menu. When you hover over your Windows 7 Start button, a different button called Windows XP Mode will above it. Click there to get into a full start menu from XP Mode in Windows 7.
And it truly does work the exact same in Windows Vista.
Here can be an IE 6 window from XP running side-by-side with IE 8 in Windows 7, because of VMware Player!
And notice, that is guaranteed to focus on any edition of Windows 7 or Vista, including Home versions.
By default, the virtualized windows will employ a border plus the VMware logo on the edge.
To remove this logo, click VM inside the VMware player window, then settings. Click within the Options tab, and judge Unity around the left. Now uncheck the boxes that say Show borders and Show badges.
Without obtaining the VMWare borders and badges give everything a authentic XP Mode feel and look.
You can also use removable devices, for instance flash drives, in XP in VMware Player. Whenever you connect a fresh device to your laptop, VMware will remind you you can add it to XP.
Simply click VM, then Removable Devices. Select your device name, and click on Connect.
By default, files created in XP in VMware Player will likely be saved from the virtual machine. Its far easier if theyre saved directly on the My Documents folder in Windows 7 and the Documents folder in Vista, so lets change this. Click VM, then Settings. Click the Options tab, then choose Shared Folders for the left. Now go through the bullet for Always enabled and examine the box for Map being a network drive in Windows guests.
Now click Add in the bottom of that window. This will we will add a shared folder.
Lets add the My Documents folder from Windows 7 or Documents folder in Vista. Click Browse, and select your My Documents folder. Click Ok, after which click Next.
Make sure the lamp is checked saying Enable this share after which click Finish. You can now close the settings window also.
Back in XP, click Start, then right simply click My Documents, and select Properties.
Click Move to get the new My Documents folder.
Find the folder we shared from Windows 7 or Vista by clicking My Computer, then this drive saying Shared Folders on vmware-host something like that similar. Now choose the folder we shared, Documents, and click on Ok.
Click Ok inside the main properties window. It may offer to repeat the files from the old My Documents folder to your new one; choose Yes to ensure you have all of one's documents in Windows 7.
Now, any time you go to save data in XP, it is going to automatically save within your My Documents folder on Windows 7 or Vista, depending in your circumstance. You can repeat the identical process for almost any folder you would like, like your My Pictures and My Music folders.
And thats all there is certainly to it! You now have a very fully functioning copy of XP running right as part of your 7 or Vista computer. Almost everything works exactly the same as XP Mode in 7 Professional or Ultimate. The only difference quite simply used your personal copy of XP, but if you've an old copy already the idea doesnt cost any a lot more than XP Mode would. And, even if your personal computer is running Windows 7 Professional, chances are you'll find it quicker to use a replica of XP you already own as opposed to importing XP Mode. VMware Player does an admirable job at integrating XP together with your computer, and in your tests it worked of the same quality or much better than the actual XP Mode.
You may actually run Windows Virtual PC on any Windows 7 computer, even ones running Home Premium that arent qualified to apply for XP Mode. You could install XP within it, then install Virtual PCs integration components, and it'll work like the default XP Mode. However, weve found VMwares solution better to use and faster to put together. If you would like to do this out, download Virtual PC in the link below you'll want to select Professional as the edition of Windows though Home Premium is licensed to own Virtual PC and will run it fine, the download isnt offered automagically.
Matthew digs up tasty bytes about Windows, Virtualization, as well as the cloud, and serves them up for those to enjoy!
Great detailed article like always. I ve been trying to find this especially after a week ago s article with all the Pro version. I d wish to see something such as Wine get ported to Windows 7 to help you easily overcome these compatibility issues as an alternative to installing a complete XP Mode, for the time being, I ll try these. Thanks!
Why VM Ware as opposed to VirtualBox?
I seem for being missing the stage that all this. My previous computer was XP and my latest is Vista. OK. Why would I want, or what could be the reason, to set up an XP Mode? Think I ll pass with this one.
There is something that will never run in Vista or 7 even just in compatibility mode.
Perhaps because VMWare has Unity which basically acts like XP Mode for Windows 7? Besides, seamlessrdp seems rather annoying to put together so I m convinced that they chose VMWare because of it s simple setting up.
It may not seem you want it anyway. XP Mode is primarily for old software that folks no longer will update to be effective well with Windows 7. Although it really is rare, there are specific programs that won t run nicely with Vista or 7 thereby XP Mode helps with that case. Applications that run in XP Mode inside a way, look as though they are a native app on Vista or 7 but in fact, are virtualized. It s nice since you won t need an entirely separate XP Desktop inside Vista or 7 to perform it.
should i be able to perform games inside it? I know some virtual machines have trouble making use of the graphics
I have VMware installed, and I used it to set up XP Pro, but it's asking me for administrator login and password. Where/when did I set this password? Can I bypass it or learn what that password is? It won t ok, i'll into XP. So close, yet, to date.
Virtualbox is the one other software that could also assistance in these cases. greetings!
Do we must re-activate it?
Jaxsen Yes, you need to always should activate XP after doing clean install in VMware Player. If you could have a legal full copy of XP, this certainly will not be a challenge.
Three in years past I used VMWare Converter to import my old XP PC into my brand new one instead of installing a whole new version of XP.
Why? Because the another one is 64bit Vista and previously there were a good deal programs that would not run on 64bit sysems. I m looking you, Palm.
I m unclear about the modern versions but there where some difficulty with USB support in Virtual Box. Or better having less support for USB.
I use VirualBox on myLinux PC and I am very sattisfied. Use it if it functions!
My work necessitates that we continue using XP and IE 7. We work completely online. I would like to get a Windows 7 computer but am stuck on XP/IE 7. Is this my solution? When you say full copy of XP, does this mean the XP disk that came with your computer I am presently using?
I cannot get Adobe CS2 to setup on my Windows 7 home premium 64 bit machine. I would experience an annoying message how the file and it wouldn't normally even start the install. Looked in the Adobe site and they is not going to support CS2 on Vista or Window 7. I installed an XP Pro VM as detailed above and CS2 installed and not using a hitch. I was planning to pay Adobe to upgrade to CS4, and not anymore. Thanks!
Does this suggest that I can run my 3 yr old HP printer NOW? Because HP doesn t make any drivers for Vista or win 7 Home premium.
When it says legal copy of XP, does that mean I can install the legal copy I have for my desktop onto my laptop also? They will allow that? What I mean is, I m not about to get some popup telling me sorry, a replica of Windows on this serial number is installed?
didn t be aware that windows 7 home premium can t run xp mode. anyways reliable information.
Exactly Sellnout. When I was recently making my buying decisions for just a computer rebuild and Win 7, I immediately contemplated photoshop CS. I paid about 35 extra for Win 7 pro OEM than for premium, just to make certain my other expensive software would always be operable on my own new build.
From should be genuine I get that this works for 64-bit Windows 7 Home edition. But can I install 32-bit Windows XP using VMware with a 64-bit Win7 OS?
My issue that I want to perform an application which isn't and will not likely be accessible for 64-bit.
Kb Yes, you'll be able to run the 32 bit version of XP in VMware on Win7 x64 perfectly. No problems in any way!
i just buy new laptop operate with win 7 home premium and i also dont have any legal copy of win xp. Any alternative strategies order for making a virtual win xp? Thank You.
In installing XP, I possess a legal copy of XP Professional SP1. After inatallation along side W7 64 bit Home Premium will I manage to easily bring it as much as SP3?
George Yes, you may easily bring it as much as SP3. Simply download the service pack, and run it within the XP mode. For more information, look at our recent post about upgrading Windows for the latest service pack /howto/13716/support-for-some-versions-of-windows-is-ending/
hell i aquired a windows vista Dell laptop with windows xp3 downgrade already installed. Currently i've got a duel boot system on set up with xp3 and windows 7 home premium. When within the past i did so a complete reistall of my xp3 OS windows never talked about for product key, however verified for being official genuine for updates. Could this still work with the VM ware since it may be the same computer which was licensed for that use of xp minus the legal copy of xp? we have a copy just no product key! thanks
ok just adding on for the question above i've reinstallation disk of xp, and also a reistallation disk of vista could i use precisely the same product key that is within the computer? Vista has asked because of it before. THANKS AGAIN
Chad if you're licensed to perform XP on that computer already, then you need to be fine to clear out your dual-boot XP and after that install that XP in VMware. Just note, it is best to only have the copy set up in one place, so make sure you only have it either installed normally OR installed inside virtual machine.
Is it possible to own big softwares in XP mode? say like visual studio 2005?
Vicky Sure, it ought to work with not an issue. I ve read about lots of people running older versions of Adobe s Creative Suite in XP Mode, and Visual Studio should work fine too. The only limitation is software may run slower inside a virtual machine of computer would whether or not this was installed directly on your laptop.
can I install or windows 7 in virtualization mode from your stick? netbooks don't usualy stood a cd-player
sandu c There would be described as a couple options here. You could copy an ISO of one's XP cd on your netbook, and then purchase a virtual copy beyond this concept. Or, you may create a virtualized XP install in your main computer, and copy it over on your netbook. However, most netbooks is not going to handle virtualization excellent. Virtualization is quite intensive, even though most laptops and desktops today are designed for it fine, I think the normal Atom 1.6Ghz and 1Gb of ram would attempt a virtual copy of XP farily slow. Another option, if you've got enought disk space, would be to setup XP in a very separate partition. This is more difficult, but you could dual-boot in 7 and XP.
Well all of you are GREAT! This worked quickly and painlessly to me. I have a very NEW HP with WIN7 HOME. I had already got a new clean copy of xp Home on ebay with every purpose of getting rid of WIN7. Thanks to you I installed VMPlayer. Then XP Home. Wallah. A couple tweeks about the VM Player setting to acquire UNITY and also be able to manipulate my files and recognize my CD. Loaded my programs with it last night and they also all work. So came from here on out, its manipulate folders and show off on xp mode, and go to internet on WIN7. Maybe use libraries maybe NOT.
I do use Photoshop. And one issue with WIN7 is which the icons with regards to files no more display the photo just a stupid icon. So, Photoshop is currently running in xpmode also.
I Cant set out to tell you how grateful I am 1st that my hypertension is lowering and 2nd that my hubby can will be inside same room with me at night when Im within the computer. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you and God Bless you for thinking about others as well as GREAT Documentation.
Thank you a lot Matthew I will check virtualization method. It seems to get quicker to swap from win7 to win xp!
well, my install didn t go well. it was probably me like me not very computer savey. can one uninstall and begin again? how? i am unable to setup the VM tools
Can I use Outlook Express using this virtual installation please?
Your readme notes on how to put in look excellent, appreciate it. I belong with a worldwide gaming club who still play Panzer General 2, and that is about as old as I am:
I have managed to have Panzer General 2 employed in Windows 7 but they have certain limitations, I know that it truely does work ok using XP and to become able to utilize Outlook Express as my mail service again would function as icing within the cake. Thank you.
Will Microsoft automatic updates automatically update both os's XP win 7?
Chris If you find the default security option, then yes, Windows XP Mode along along with your main Windows will automatically update. However, observe that these updates are going to be separate and produced by each OS themselves. If you haven t run your XP mode in a very while, it is going to not be updated and can automatically update the next time you might have it open and so are online.
Hi,,, we have a dell studio 1558 laptop with Windows 7 home Premium 64bit, during which windows XP can t be installed by any means so we have installed this vmware player and installed windows xp inside it. all things are fine, just the thing being that my net is slow. the Vmware tools for windows 2000 or later r getting a hell outside of time to download directly through vmware, can there be anyways i will download it directly by having a download link. like may i download it during my Download manager???
Mandar Unfortunately, I don t believe it is possible to download the VMware Tools individually for VMware Player. One option would be to start out it it downloading the instruments at night once you don t should use the net should easily be made by morning:
Sorry regarding the troubles!
you mention installing XP coming from a CD we already have after which activating it. What if one do this on the different computer as opposed to one already running the activated copy of XP? I guess that is going to be not be accepted since that copy of XP has already been activated. Then, yoy may must buy a different key, if whatsoever possible now, or upgrade the Windows 7 to at the very least Pro.
Gilles Ok, here s a couple of things about licensing. If you could have bought a boxed copy of XP, installed it on your laptop, but now desire to remove it from laptop and install it in the virtual machine, you may legally do that. If it doesn t activate, call Microsoft support, explain whatever you re doing, and they can help you. But, if you desire to maintain your XP within the other computer, then no, you are able to t legally put it in your virtual machine. Also, if the computer was included with XP when you purchased, then it really is an OEM edition which is licensed just for that one computer, to help you t move the license for XP either.
I will endeavor this as MSFT still can t correct losing intranet connectivity to XP machines when returning from hibernation. My new laptop has Win7 not my choice.
Amazingly useful article. I have been being affected by Win7 HomePro version since I got the brand new computer and couldnt believe Microsoftinthehead immediately expect us to cover an upgrade just to obtain back having access to old programmes, printers, everyone. I used Windows Virtual Machine before VMware but ended up using a blank screen after loading XP, so removed it, loaded VMware and followed the instructions within your article perfect result.
Now, if perhaps I could resolve the multiple reboots at Win764 power-up then I maybe would employ a good word to say on Win7.
I have installed everything smoothly, i quickly was can not connect my USB broadband always found not connected and struggle to shutdown properly took extremely period of time. when I start the pc, blue screen sprouted. FYI, my laptop is running i3 processor with 2mb RAM. Other than that, the windows XP runs prefectly in windows 7. Did i omitted any steps? Appreciated when someone could help. Many thanks
This is fabulous so thanks. In my home network I am the just one running windows 7 and it also really doesn t like giving use of computers running other OS; it has caused all kinds of difficulty with sharing files and printing documents from savings around your house. Now problem solved.
Can I buy a copy of windows ME inside the same manner allow me to learn some of my older games that wont are powered by xp or 7?
Karen You absolutely could! If you've got an installer CD and key, it will be with relative ease. Let us know the way it goes!
Thanks just for this great solution.
1 Will this work if I provide an upgrade version of XP that I should unlock with my Win 98 cd? Yes, I have the cd. I originally loaded XP onto a different second disk drive with no os.
2 I desire to use XP Mode with the HP scanner which has an XP driver. There aren't any driver updates available. Will my Win 7 64bit notebook recognize the scanner, assuming I get the many above steps right?
So I ve put W7 Pro on my own 3 yr old Alienware ALX. It loaded up COD4 and COD MW2. But it won t load up several of my oldere XP of War and Medal of Honor/Pacific assult. If I perform the XP thing will these games stock up?
I do possess a good XP os, but did I read to find the download since I have w7 pro? What would run the games best.
This pc is definitely used for games.
Thanks! therefore you all rock using the help!
Joe Sounds like your better solution will be to dual boot with XP and Windows 7, as that will give you the most effective performance as part of your games. Then, you d normally use Windows 7, but may reboot and visit XP when you desire to play the older XP games. Here s one or two tutorials that could be helpful using this type of:

Joe Installing on the E drive should work fine, just ensure that to select it if you re installing XP. If it s a whole lot of smaller, must be easy to notice. Sounds like you ve got an attractive tweaked out setup there:
You ll should reboot to gain access to XP, along with the second link I gave within my last comment should help you will get the dual-booting all setup. It s easy, really.
And yes, you ll should reinstall everything, including drivers and all sorts of, inside XP. It ll basically become a 2nd computer, except it s from the same box. Make sure you ve got your entire stuff duplicated before you start, and it must go great. Hope it will help!
If you've bought an off-the-shelf computer recently, most likely it included Windows preloaded on top of the system. Unfortunately, a great number of systems with Windows preinstalled will not come having a Windows setup CDROM; at best they such as a Recovery Disk that restores it to its shipping condition. If you plan to reformat and execute a clean installation of the system, you could think that you've got to buy another additional Windows XP licence even though you've already paid for starters for that same machine. This article shows you how you'll be able to re-develop a usable and bootable Windows XP installation CD making use of your running system.
Very often, people wish to reinstall a system to eliminate the crap that comes preinstalled on his or her system. If you could have bought any PC or laptop from brands like Dell, Acer, HP, etc, you will really know what I mean. The manufacturer typically installs numerous demo and trial software, toolbars along with other junk that clutter up your body and take your time. Uninstalling these programs takes a whole lot of time, and in some cases when it truly is done, you will still find residual pieces on the previous installation littered across your hard disk along with the registry. In such a situation, it's useful to reinstall a pristine copy of Windows, load the drivers and simply the software you actually desire to use.
Another possible reason is youve used your system for many time, as well as become incredibly sluggish and cluttered. You would like to reinstall and initiate from scratch. To simplify this process, you desire to integrate slipstream all of the Windows hotfixes, device drivers, applications, etc, to your Windows install disk, so that after you finish running the Windows installer, your whole body is good to look, without the ought to wait a couple of hours for Windows Update capture up using the last few years importance of Windows Update. For this slipstreaming to occur, you need to have a Windows setup CD.
If you would like to execute a repair install of Windows, you will require a bootable Windows install disc.
Im sure there are numerous other possible explanations why you might have to have a Windows Installation CD, but lets get on while using procedure to make one.
Before you'll be able to recreate a bootable Windows installation disk, specific things are required:
This guide only relates to Windows XP systems, whether it is XP Home or Professional. I have not tested this process on other versions of Windows.
This is vital. Without this, the treatment outlined within this page is not going to work. To find out whether you are able to use the steps listed with this page to re-build your bootable Windows XP setup disk, seek out into one's body drive most of the C: drive, and discover if you are able to find a folder named I386 within the root directory. That is, see if you've the C:I386 folder on the hard disk.
If your PC or laptop came from your major PC vendors like HP, Dell or Acer, it's almost guaranteed that there is undoubtedly an I386 folder on the root of drive C:, unless youve deleted it.
Note that only c:i386 provides the files needed because of this operation. Do not utilize files in C:WindowsDriver Cachei386 or other folders.
When you got your PC or laptop, in all probability it already had Windows pre-activated, which means that you may use laptop out-of-the-box while not having to enter your Windows licence key from Microsoft or wanting to activate your machine.
However, after you reinstall Windows, you will need to have a Windows licence key. You can usually find this taped somewhere on your personal computer sometimes around the underside or back of the pc. Without this, you can't get far within the installation.
Some manufacturers provide you while using device drivers to your system with a CD that comes together with your system. Others require you to head over to their website and download these drivers. Whichever the case could be, make sure you've got all your drivers handy prior to starting. Burn them onto a CD or DVD. Do not leave them with your hard disk, as your clean installing of Windows probably will wipe out everything in your hard disk. If your personal machine has SATA, IDE, SCSI or some other mass storage devices on your hard disks which the Windows installer won't recognize out in the box, you will need to make a floppy disk while using drivers for the device. At the appropriate time, when Windows prompts that you hit F6 to load the drivers coming from a floppy disk, you will ought to so. This is however outside of the scope with this tutorial.
If your manufacturer has never provided you with any device drivers, or if you've got lost the drivers CD or DVD which the vendor has provided you, all isn't lost. You can try employing a device driver backup program to extract the previous drivers on your own currently running system. Burn the drivers onto a CD or DVD before beginning. You can obtain a device driver backup program through the Free Device Driver Backup and Extraction Utilities page on Note that backing your device drivers in this particular manner will never help you if your laptop has SATA, IDE, SCSI or another mass storage devices for your harddrive that Windows setup will not recognise. In such cases, you would like the manufacturers textmode drivers that the driver backup utility will not likely recreate.
You will need to possess a CD/DVD burning software that will allow you to definitely create Bootable CDs. Not all DVD or CD mastering programs allow you to do that, particularly the OEM versions which can be bundled with new computers or DVD/CD writers.
For the purpose with this tutorial, I will use ImgBurn, a totally free burning software you could find listed within the Free CD and DVD Burners and Copying Software page. You can naturally use other software, but since it's difficult personally to write a tutorial that covers every possible burning software around, the following information will think that you are using ImgBurn. Since the software packages are available at no cost, I doubt this choice will pose significant hardship for any individual.
You will likely need the boot sector connected with an existing bootable Windows 2000, XP or 2003 setup CDROM. The easiest strategy to get this can be to download the file from one in the links on In fact, you need to do this now. Download the file and save it with your desktop. You will have to have the file later.
I would also strongly suggest you make a backup image of your respective entire system before you decide to reinstall it. By entire system, I mean the entire system and not simply your data. This is important in case there may be some glitch with your installation or some fault inside setup CD which you create, producing an unusable system. In such a situation, you will probably be able to bring back your working system from a backup image. If you aren't sure just what a backup image is, or imagine that Im only referring to saving your documents to an alternative location, or worse, believe image means some type of picture, please tend not to carry on with this particular procedure.
If you dont have a very decent harddrive backup and image software, you'll be able to check out the Free Hard Disk Backup and Restore, Hard Disk Image and Cloning Utilities page. If you're tinkering along with your system, then you owe it to yourself plus your sanity to have a good disk drive image backup program.
Note that you have NO GUARANTEES while using procedure I outline here. It is possible who's does not work - by way of example, if the vendor has deleted some essential file from the I386 folder which we are going to need, your installation could very well fail at some crucial point after they have formatted your disk drive! It is also feasible for my procedure won't work on your own system, or that I made some mistake in describing it here. So do everthing at your personal risk. And make sure you might have an up-to-date backup within your system you know works.
Create a brief working folder in the root top in the C: drive called XPSETUP with no quotes. Actually, it is possible to name it anything you would like and put it anywhere you prefer, but for simple explanation, the remainder in the steps below will assume that you might have created the XPSETUP folder inside root of drive C:. This C:XPSETUP folder will probably be where you can establish the CDROM directory structure on your bootable Windows CD.
Copy the complete C:I386 to C:XPSETUP. When you might have finished, you should have C:XPSETUPI386. Notice that I said copy, not move. Do NOT drag and drop the I386 folder into your XPSETUP directory. If you accomplish that, you might end up moving it in the XPSETUP folder according to where you came up with XPSETUP folder. It is important to work from your copy with the I386 directory so that when you make mistakes, you may simply go back and begin all over again. If you move your directory or drag and drop it, therefore you make a mistake, your mistake will likely be permanent. So again, COPY the complete I386 folder to XPSETUP. It may take a while for that copy operation to finish, nevertheless its safer in this way.
If you are not sure the way to copy, keep to the following procedure: Highlight the I386 folder using Windows Explorer. Right-click on the folder and select Copy. Then open the XPSETUP folder. The folder really should be empty in the moment. Right go through the empty space inside window and click on Paste. A very lengthy copy procedure is going to take place.
To verify that you've copied the folder instead of moved it, return to your top of C: and check which the I386 folder is still there which the original files for the reason that folder are still there.
Create an ASCII text file with only your message Windows with no quotes and such as final space after your message Windows inside it, followed by a different line. To accomplish this, start Notepad. Notepad could be found inside your Start menu - Programs - Accessories - Notepad. Type your message Windows with no quotes and following my case exactly that may be, W is usually a capital letter as well as the rest will be in small letters. Then type one additional space. Finally, hit the ENTER key. Do not add other things to this file. Do not change anything - for instance, usually do not type all things in capital letters or anything like this. The contents on the file need to be exactly as I said, or Windows setup will issue a blunder message.
Save the file while using filename WIN51 add the quotes to ensure that Notepad will not give a extension behind your way back in C:XPSETUP. Again, the filenames spelling and case has to be exactly like mine.
If your PC or laptop originally had XP Home, generate a copy with the file you only created and refer to it WIN51IC. If you're using XP Home Service Pack 1 SP 1, make two copies in the file and contact them WIN51IC and 1. If you're using XP Home Service Pack 2 SP 2, make three copies in the file and contact them WIN51IC, 1 and a pair of. All the copies from the files should have C:XPSETUP.
If your PC or laptop originally included XP Professional, come up with a copy in the file you merely created and it is known as WIN51IP. If you happen to be using XP Professional Service Pack 1 SP 1, make two copies in the file and refer to them as WIN51IP and 1. If you happen to be using XP Professional Service Pack 2 SP 2, make three copies in the file and contact WIN51IP, 1 and a couple. All the copies with the files should take C:XPSETUP.
Note carefully what I said above. You might be running XP SP 2 now, in case your PC had XP SP 1, it is best to create the files for XP SP 1. There is surely an exception to this particular. If your PC or laptop had XP or XP SP 1, but you would like your Windows install CD to setup XP SP 2, produce the WIN51 files necessary for SP 2 and keep to the procedure for slipstreaming Windows service pack 2 SP 2 into your Windows setup CDROM given inside next step.
If your PC or laptop came originally with XP or XP SP 1 service pack 1 but you wish your Windows setup disk to setup XP SP 2, do the next. Otherwise, skip towards the next step.
Note that even if you could have since updated your pc to SP 2, you will still have to do this task if you wish your setup CD to fit Windows XP Service Pack 2. The reason is always that updating your running Windows system doesn't automatically update the I386 directory. Your I386 directory still is the Windows setup files of whatever version of Windows you had once you first bought your PC/laptop.
Download Windows XP service pack 2 with this location Save it anywhere that suits you except from the C:XPSETUP folder. For the purpose on this tutorial, I will assume held on it as, which is, inside root folder using the filename.
Important : if you would not configure Windows to teach you the full filename you must probably do it before changing the name from the file. Otherwise, you can be inadvertently saving the file as without your knowing. That is, you start to see the filename just as Windows Explorer nonetheless its actually.
You will ought to update the C:XPSETUPI386 folder to include the updated SP 2 files. As a side benefit, the service pack 2 updater will likely create some files including inside the C:XPSETUP folder. This process of integrating the service pack files into your original XP or XP SP 1 is called slipstreaming.
To slipstream SP 2, first open a command prompt. To do that, select the Start menu, pick the Run menu item, and get into the words cmd. Click the OK button. A black command prompt window will open.
Enter these line to the window and press the ENTER key.
After this software finishes, you may close the command prompt window. If you look for your XPSETUP folder, you will notice some new files there.
At this aspect, the C:XPSETUP directory contains each of the files that will likely be copied for a Windows Setup CDROM. Dont worry when the directory will not contain files like that you just see for the retail CDROMs. You wont want it for a brand new install in the bootable CDROM. Note: You will have if you'd to slipstream Service Pack 2 as mentioned previously. The Service Pack 2 slipstreamer creates available for you.
Now open the file you downloaded earlier. Simply doubleclicking it in Windows explorer should perform the trick. Go into your cds directory and into wxphome or wxppro; it doesnt matter which directory, then the files directory. Drag the file into C: the basis directory/folder of drive C:. Dont get creative make it in many other directory. If you do that, ImgBurn aren't going to be able to get later.
If you could have not downloaded ImgBurn, obtain it now and do the installation. You will find it for auction on s Free CD and DVD Burners and Copying Software page.
The version of ImgBurn I used to create this informative guide was 2.3.2.0. My cursory test of your later version, 2.4.0.0, found which the resulting disk wasn't made correctly. Therefore, you ought to avoid 2.4.0.0. Either make use of the earlier version or have a version later than 2.4.0.0, if any, that gets the bugs fixed.
Open up Notepad, and copy the text on the box below make certain you select everything - click inside box and type CtrlA to choose all and paste it in to a blank Notepad window. Save the file as
such as quotes, which you'll want to prevent Notepad from adding a extension on your filename somewhere in your desktop or anywhere you prefer. Do not add or delete anything on the file.
Start ImgBurn. Select Mode - Build on the menu.
Select File - Load Project in the menu. A dialog box will open. Select the file you put by earlier and click on Open. If you cant get a Load Project item within the File menu, it indicates you failed to carry out the earlier step. Go back and practice it.
Click the Labels tab around the right side in the screen. Change the label from the ISO9660 field to one from the following, determined by what type of bootable setup CD youre making.
This step might be optional should you cant be bothered. I manage to recall having entered an incorrect label inside past without getting the Windows installer fail on me.
Finally, click on the Write icon on the bottom on the window. To find out which picture the Write button can there be are no visual cues, even regarding which picture actually represents control button, hover your mouse above the pictures near to the bottom with the window and wait with the tooltip to show up. When you hover your mouse in the correct picture, a tooltip will appear while using text Write. Note: depending on your own version of ImgBurn, your icon may read Build rather then Write.
A dialog box will likely pop up saying something similar to Youve only selected 1 folder! C:XPSETUP. Does the XPSETUP folder represent the main directory for your image content? Otherwise the XPSETUP folder are going to be visible from the root directory in the image. Click Yes to this particular. Basically, you wish the contents with the XPSETUP folder for being what you see whenever you view the CDROMs top level directory.
If you have an error message from ImgBurn regarding, it indicates that you've got missed one with the steps outlined above. Return to that paragraph and take care of the step before continuing.
At here, the bootable Windows setup disk will likely be created. To use it, squeeze CD in the CD drive, ensure that your BIOS is determined to boot first from a CD drive, and reboot. Voila, if all goes well, the Windows installer starts up and youre around the way to reinstalling your whole body.
If you encounter any problems, youve probably missed a stride somewhere. Missed steps account to the majority on the problems encountered by people that try this out. You might also want to check on the FAQ for How to Create Windows XP Setup CD for any Windows-Preloaded System to see whether the answer is also given there.

I am impressed using the Release Candidate version from the s/w that I completely forgot so it was time limited. When the first nag-mail arrived I didnt need to think way too hard about purchasing the whole product.
The 64 bit option placed on a four and also a half year-old laptop HP Pavilion zd8000 series without hitch - well, nearly, I discovered the lappys audio chipset didnt yet employ a W7 compatible driver and I had to begin with the install again with all the 32 bit version. So far, while using 32 bit version, all continues to be well. All legacy applications manage to work, including some pretty ancient DOS based ones.
I was using XP Pro before this - I avoided the Vista trap, thank goodness - along with the transition between the os's was easy.
Ive been an IT user/configurer/builder ever since the late 1970s and this also change of OS was only the next one within a long line. No regrets, ho hassle. It just works.
All I have to do now could be pluck the courage to get back some disk space by deleting the back-up directory.
I appreciate the interface, although tranparency in the window title bars is really a bit of the trap at times a web based business to select one with the many that I probably have open within the desktop. I like the cabability to hover on the taskbar icons to view whats there and access the main one sub-window of a credit application I need, almost instantly. It is quite useful when working between several docs or spreadsheets.
One on the better releases that MS have made on the past several decades.
Thank you for the feedback.
Sorry, we still did not record your vote. Please try again
Upgraded for this from XP in summer total it feels as though XP but is really a bit faster and slicker, its suitable for multi core processors and works extremely
It blends with all my hardware made for Windows XP, but you could need to have relavent Windows 7 drivers on the hardware manufacturers websites make use of these with Windows 7.
This version of Windows 7 has XP mode which you must down load from Microsofts website and is also basically an emulator running on Windows 7.
Although XP mode can run XP software, it cant see and use greater than 2 cores on the multi core processor so isnt as quickly as original XP that may see and utilize as many cores because the processor that is quite annoying as Microsoft never told any if you desire ultimate speed on XP, set your PC for dual boot so you are able to use either on boot up.
From my experience I can make use of around 90% from the software designed running in Windows NT, 2000 and XP on Windows 7 minus the need for XP mode.
If you've got a multicore processor install 64 bit version since it's faster than 32 bit version and yes it can run 32 bit software.
Windows 7 Professional will be the only version which will probably be supported until Jan 2019, the many other versions of Windows 7 will eradicate getting support from microsoft in if you desire to make use of OS for any long time have this version as it offers all the options that come with others except Ultimate and it is going to be around for along time.
Its a tremendous pity you cant get/use Norton Partition manager within this as normally the one Windows 7 has isnt that good, Norton Ghost nearly version 12 will not work together with Windows 7, Earlier versions of PC Anywhere will not assist Windows 7 so beware than it when upgrading. Read more

First off allow me to explain something, being a fulltime student studying a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, my University pays to get a service from Microsoft allowing us to have usage of new software before anybody.
I am currently using Windows 7 Professional 32 bit, full version. This could be the final retail version as it will likely be shipped and thus far I have had no major issues while using software whatsoever.
The Operating System runs smoothly, looks a great deal cleaner and clearer than previous versions of Windows that I purchased. I tried Vista but think it is too unstable for my liking. I have performed a clean install on my small Laptop and I am very pleased with all the hardware support it offers.
My Laptop has 2gb RAM, 256mb nVidia GeForce Go 7400 and 1.83Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. The feature of Windows 7 that sticks out the most to me may be the excellent multiple monitor support. Firstly my graphics card is non standard and needs Windows Update recommended drivers which will not be Official drivers from nVidia but work perfectly. When I had originally tried Windows Vista I had no dual screen support and because of driver issues I was frequently shown Blue Screens, in terms of Windows 7 currently I have been making use of it for over per week now and it also hasnt failed yet.
My Graphics card was the one peice of hardware that required a person download the remainder including a 15 in 1 Card reader, Connexant HD Audio, Gigabit Ethernet NIC, Intel PROSet Wireless all worked perfectly on first boot.
In relation to its software compatibility I have run into no errors or issues yet, I run Office 2007 for office stuff, Windows Live Messenger for chat, Firefox 3. Read more

Decided to splash out and have this as there is absolutely no way Im moving approximately Windows 10. I guess Im future proof now.
What may i say lots better then Vista which I were required to suffer with. Rare blue screens. Best Microsoft OS currently including Windows 8.1.
Fast service, well packed, product is just as advertised. Thank you
