Yes XP will not be perfect but hardly slow than the bloated and rushed VISTA. If you perform clean install with XP and your laptop is still slow its your hardware or you've the wrong drivers installed. This is just not XPs fault.
The following step is to buy a different computer with 7. You can get a fresh one for a couple of hundred of course, if you need a great computer for tech you may build your own for a couple of hundred too. Im sure you'll find techs in your neighborhood that can help you. Either way the rule of thumb is XP for old computers, and 7 for brand spanking new ones. And if you absolutely do cant stand XP for reasons uknown then switch the signal from linux. Its free and much more secure.
