There offers some good news. While Microsoft won't issue anymore updates for XP after April 8 - - much to my disagreement also to my ZDNet colleague Ed Botts wish to let the OS die with dignity - - Microsoft will still allow you to run Windows Update on XP systems as soon as the April 8 date.
That amount of relief comes on the keyboard of some other ZDNet colleague, Mary Jo Foley, who writes:
Microsoft will continue to create all patches and fixes designed to Windows XP until April 8, 2014, accessible to users via Windows Update. There are no current plans to get rid of existing Windows XP security updates from Windows Update after end of support on April 8, 2014, a spokesperson confirmed.
The truth is, none individuals will have looked everywhere and that we will find some forgotten machines. I thought Id found the whole VMs and critical machines, but I had forgotten one machine that happened to get buried behind a box of cleaning supplies inside the garage.
Like most of you, I have lots of old machines and parts scattered around, useful for certain projects and discarded or placed in the limbo we call the garage shelves.
As it proved, that machine were built with a solid motherboard as well as a 10, 000 RPM ! hard disk in it. My wife needed an extra box to use as being a scanning workstation and instead of run out and buying a new machine, I scoured the boneyard, finding this beast. But it had XP onto it, and also, since it hadnt been run or dusted since prior to a days of SP3, it wouldnt upgrade until I first upgraded it to SP3.
Ive upgraded old XP machines before even though its an irritation, it is not a terrible process sufficient reason for a pile of spare Windows 8 licenses I bought for 40 each, its a good deal cheaper compared to a new machine.
Now, back when I wrote 8 lessons learned from upgrading a dog-slow XP machine to Windows 8, a number of you were pretty very frustrating to me for not having my XP machines already updated to SP3 - - that is needed to visit Windows 8. But the simple truth is, and just like the machine I just dusted off from the garage, weve been using treadmills for more compared to a decade and never all of them are already in continuous service.
As I willing to run the update process for the soon-to-be-new-again scanning machine, I seen that I wasnt sure how easy it could well be, in years to return, to locate XPs SP3 to be able to upgrade those old machines.
I do not have an goal of making a career of reviving old dogs and turning them into Windows 8 boxes, but my decades laptop or computer experience tells me that there should come a day when you are performing so is needed for some critical and unexpected reason.
So Ive gone ahead and downloaded a copy with the professionals and developers installer for SP3, which can be a self-contained downloadable executable. Ive backed that up in the identical place Ive backed up all of my other patch files and installers and from now on, if I someday require it, I have it.
I recommend you do exactly the same. Heres the link within the Microsoft site to download it. Its not big, it wont call for much time, but should you need it sometime soon, youll thank me for assisting you to be prepared.
Im not implying Microsoft will pull it down. Microsoft continues to have a security patch online for Windows 98 yes, I tested of some extent of twisted curiosity, but I am saying it is going to be easier when you just happen to have the XP SP3 as part of your toolbox should.
