This page documents the books within my library, initially stemming from my curiosity about the fur trade in Canada. As my reading progressed, it expanded to add the history with the First Nations people that were here before, and upon whom their early Europeans depended. Hence, the still-expanding library covers earlier history of Canada in its entirety, its geography, and almost by definition, the canoe. I maintain your information on this web site for my own, personal benefit and rehearse. It just helps me record things. But, having made the trouble to create it, is is sensible to share it, within the chance that some from the material will probably be of interest or use to others.

This is often a revised version of your 2003 document on the same name. The directory comprises an intensive list of residential schools, including location, numerous operation, and under whose auspices these folks were run. The above three short books each recount a tradional story from the Woodland Cree of Northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. They were transcribed by Prentice G. Downes see Sleeping Island in 1937, as told to him via an interpreter by 75 years old Adam Ballantyne, an elder on the Peter Ballantyne Band of Pelican Narrows, Saskatchewan. Each of the books is beautifully illustrated by woodcut images made by Annie Downes Catterson, Downes daughter. The Wisakyjak and Mimigwesseos books each one has an introduction by Robert Cockburn, that's currently editing Downess journals. Each of those three books are beautifully produced.

Bays, Eric 2009. Indian Residential Schools: Another Picture. Ottawa: Baico Publishing.
This book presents another perspective about the residential schools from that present in Churchill 2004, Miller 1996 Milloy 1999, by way of example. Given its role from the operation of residential schools, it is very important state that Bays is usually a retired bishop from the Anglican Church of Canada. This book is his try and say that while there is some bad within the system, that there seemed to be also the right, knowning that the latter is overshadowed because of the former in this conversation regarding the residential school system. One of his points is always that some students did come over the system and took to higher education or successful professional careers understanding that it is just as inapporpriate to believe that these students accomplished it despite the school system as it is to imagine that they accomplished it because of it. In short, this volume is surely an attempt to insert a certain amount of what although call balance inside the converstaion - an account balance that he sees as missing.
The challenge in doing so, however, is finding a different kind of balance- that between constructively adding relevant points for the dialogue and this of as an apologist. Regardless with the items one thinks of Bays position, a lesser amount of the quality of his arguments, his scholarship with the exceptional writing, this book may be valued at reading - if for few other reason than if reflects a perspective that exists in part from the community, and thus is worth receiving a fair hearing by those enthusiastic about understanding the issues hoping to find a path forward.

This is usually a self-published memoire of 4 years 1944-48 that this author spent in an Anglican school in Aklavik inside Northwest Territories, where she taught Inuit and Kutchin students. The latter part on the book covers an outing back towards the community between 1955-58. Annotation to return.

This is usually a short, 16 page tract, with a federally appointed Chief Medical Officer with the Indian Department. On the one hand, this document can be a testament that there were white people working for your Federal Government who recognized the requirement to improve conditions in native schools, especially regarding health, and tuberculosis particularly. On the other hand, it can make the lack of acton around the part with the government increasingly unacceptable.

This is surely an account of Frasers 1808 trip down what he mistakenly thought was the Columbia River, for the Pacific - another overland expedition towards the Pacific north of Mexico. While it is usually a book written for adults, it is really a quick read plus a fairly good and reliable introduction towards the expedition. It is very much depending on Lambs much more extensive work, The Letters and Journals of Simon Fraser, 1806-1808.
