We got the first scoop about the TomTom ONE XL a couple weeks back, these days we have the full details from TomTom. True to its name, the ONE XL is defined as a bigger version on the TomTom ONE read our review. There are two basic items that are added that make this ONE an XL. An optional traffic receiver along with a widescreen display. Here is what we could tell you about those characteristics.
The biggest difference around the TomTom ONE XL would be the widescreen display. It is often a 4.3 inch display running at 480 272 pixels versus an original ONE which carries a 3.5 inch display running at 320 240 pixels. We produce an entire article where we talk around the good and bad of widescreen GPS models which you'll read. That advice applies here as well. The individual elements around the screen aren't actually bigger, you recently get a wider view. It doesn t really provide you with a more substantial view on the road ahead.
To accommodate the widescreen display your entire ONE XL is larger than a normal ONE. The XL measures 4.7 x 3.4 x 1.two inches. While I haven t yet measured the ONE, it doesn t fit inside our current stipulations with the items we look at a slim GPS device. Currently we merely classify a GPS as slim whether its shortest dimension is 1.0 inches or less. Once we have our hands within the ONE XL natural meats revise might know about consider slim, but mainly because it stands now it doesn t meet our specification of slim despite obviously being created for that category.
As far as weight goes, the TomTom ONE XL is categorized as middle with the pack of other GPS devices with this class, coming in at 7.4 ounces. This is more versus the Garmin Nuvi 600 series which might be a little over 6 ounces but less as opposed to Magellan Maestro series which comes in at 8.5 ounces.
The keeping of buttons and connectors is related to the design for the ONE. On the top could be the power button and around the bottom would be the SD card slot, USB/power connector, and new at all to the TomTom ONE XL may be the traffic receiver connector. More on that later. We are still disappointed how the majority from the connectors are around the bottom in the ONE. We wish TomTom would drop the rounded sides from the ONE in favor of your square design, utilize extra space to slim the unit by a few tenths of an inch, then move all with the connectors sideways for easier mounting vehicle.
This GPS comes with the identical mount as found within the ONE. Simple, nevertheless it works fairly well.
The other major difference between an original ONE and also the ONE XL will be the addition of the plug for connecting a RDS-TMC traffic receiver. I ve already heard some confusion over this specification, so let s fully grasp this cleared up. The TomTom ONE XL has an port within the bottom in the device which you could connect an RDS-TMC traffic receiver. It does not include that traffic receiver within the USA. You need to choose the traffic receiver itself and traffic subscription separately. The TomTom ONE not XL does not feature this port, and that means you cannot connect the traffic receiver compared to that device. So in conclusion, the TomTom ONE XL does not feature a traffic receiver, but unlike the normal ONE it really is at least possible for this. We are still looking to get confirmation from TomTom regarding pricing on the traffic receiver, however we expect it will likely be around 135.
We expect that this routing, detour, and itinerary planning functions could be the same as that from the TomTom ONE read our review. We will update this when we find anything different. These are the functions which really define TomTom to make their products great. TomTom does an admirable job of emphasizing navigation features first, as well as the extras second.
There are two features people might be upset usually are not included inside TomTom ONE XL, Bluetooth hands-free calling the ONE XL is equipped with Bluetooth, but only gain access to their PLUS services and text-to-speech for street names. Why go towards the trouble of adding Bluetooth for PLUS services and not offer it for hands-free calling? And as primarily a navigational feature, more GPS manufacturers have to start offering text-to-speech on the lower end devices.
Finally, if you're planning on using the TomTom ONE XL beyond your car in pedestrian mode, or anywhere you don t gain access to power, be aware of the life of the battery. The ONE XL has one on the shortest life cycle of battery specifications within the class at about 2 hours. Still, that won t be considered a huge limitation for many.
While you won t see this GPS on store shelves until May, I m sure it is going to quickly become a hot seller. TomTom is touting the ONE beeing the world s 1 selling personal navigation unit and I m sure the ONE XL can be really hot.
Just purchased the most recent XL/S. I ve been a longtime GPS user since I m an advert driver. First unit was the Garmin Street Pilot over several years ago 1200!
I deliver to get a major Pizza company and rely heavily on GPS since we've hundreds of courts over these sub-divisions. Although the Initial brand product available from QVC last year offered an increased screen along with a competent GPS, It required sending it back and 100 to obtain updated maps and software. Tomtom allows that on-line, BIG selling feature.
OK, we have found my issue while on an otherwise great product. The Initial brand unit was street centric, thus you typed the path and house number. If there have been conflicts, you're given optional streets in a variety of towns. Tomtom is town/city centric, which you must know that before you find a street. I our ordering system, we list a previous address, not the town/city it can be in. I find that may be is a major flaw inside software. For delivery drivers in the state, some might not understand the exact community in their region, all they have is often a street address. Now Tomtom does define the appropriate town/city/metro regions, nonetheless it is quite a bit less good a a street centric concept. What is needed can be a d-base that senses zip-codes according to the street address to find the correct town/city/metro.
Hi, have experienced my one xl around a year now. It shows the revolutionary East Link into it, when I try and navigate down for the Mornington Peninsula, it doesn t recognise it. I presume how the map I have didn t have East Link on it the way it was not finished being built. It still shows it around the map, and can never go upon it when I navigate along it. It just avoids it completely. And if I utilize travel via feature, it is going to let me work with a part of East Link, but then it is going to travel off it.
Is there a download upgrade simply for the East Link or even for any new roads?
I employ a major trouble with my One-XL, which I bought only a couple of weeks ago. The suction cup doesn't stay on!! It keeps falling off after about quarter-hour, regardless of where I have attached it to. Does anyone have ideas or suggestions?
I tried frequently to solve this difficulty and finally chose this. Take some 14 copper electric wire and earn a frame to hold the machine. It is best in the event you or a friend solders the frame. Leave some wire for enough time to fold too much of your automobile visor. This keeps the system at eye level, out with the sunlight, and resists all bumps. If you need I could send an e-mail with attached photo.
I HAVE SAME GPS,, I USE RUBBING ALCOHOL ON BOTH WINDOW AND SUCTION CUP,,,,,, WORKS GREAT
I are actually given a pre-owned TomTom one XL. Can you charge it from a computer by usb connection or with cellphone charger internally your house if you employ a connection plug socket which fits it power port?
Willie Ponder - November 1st, 2010
Maybe a few will work, a few will not. It will also charge much slower via USB.
I used this and it really is just plain old junk. The company includes a vaulted opinion of itself and does not listen towards the customer. It has no selection for driving something similar to a motor home or perhaps 18-wheeler. It sent me to your wrong place. I must admit i was only 4 miles from destination. It shows gasoline stations where there are none. The volume control is clunky and buried in menus. Menu navigation isn't easy. Save your money and get a Garmin. Our Magellan experience was similar to this. Tom Tom would need to start listening and scrap every one of its designs. This one may finish up under the wheels of the motorhome.
I just adopted a Tom Tom One XL, I am and a school bus driver and would choose to program my stops to the GPS. There were no directions within the box to finish this task. Could you please identify how to take action. Thank you.
TomTom isn't going to improve their maps/software. We bought one about 2 in the past and an annoyance was the fact how the voice said highway one west one in the event it referred to highway one-oh-one. We called them and exclaimed. Recently we bought another TomTom which we've returned for other reasons and it also had precisely the same problem! No huge problem, you say. Well I feel that is typical of TomTom s attitude. Plus the reality that street names are regularly mispronounced and words are clipped short at the conclusion. Bye Bye to Tom Tom!

Just purchased the most up-to-date XL/S. I ve been a longtime GPS user since I m an industrial driver. First unit was the Garmin Street Pilot over 36 months ago 1200!

Jim, you can have a better quality suction holder off ebay. much better compared to the origibal tomtom one who comes while using kit. You actually pump it thus it gets a great suction.
Thank you for that info Tim and Steve. I will definitely try your suggestions.
Hi! Was given an TOMTOM oneXl as a birthday present. Suction mount doesn t work efficiently at all. Keeps falling off randomly times. Last time it fell TOMTOM landed on gear shift and smashed screen. Called TOMTOM and they also refuse to do anything whatsoever other than offer 50 off next purchase. They say there's no problem with suction mount if there was they'd have recalled it. What a number of crap! It s a design flaw and there's a plethora of blogs online to indicate the issue. This device is merely 6 months old. So BEWARE with the suction mount. IT IS A DESIGN FLAW.
Helen, I agree to you with the poor design in the suction with the TomTom one XL. Mine has additionally fallen off many a time. I try to suction it close for the dash board to protect yourself from it falling a considerable ways or hitting something. I are actually told the after market the one that you can get off Ebay is fairly good, and doesnt come off whatsoever. You actually place it about the windscreen and pump it therefore it sticks well.
I have a very tomtom one xl and wondered if there is usually a way to upload the maps in the sd card for the actual unit. I was told that it's 1g of memory. I have tried through tomtom home on my small pc however with no success.
Steve - November 10th, 2008
Steve, my understanding is which the XL was bought in two different configurations. One didn t provide an internal memory plus the maps and application came by using an SD card. The later configuration sported maps and application in an of internal memory and while there's an SD card slot, no SD card was included the way it wasn t necessary.
So if the device sported maps and also the application with an SD card, then I don t believe there's an memory to transfer the products to.

This will be the third TomTom Ive had. My last one was stolen from my car in Raleigh, NC. I got an appointment about per year later at a police detective in DC. They had recovered my unit, however it was evidence inside a stolen auto parts case simply because they used it to trace the suspects travels while they sold or fenced the automobile parts. In other words, We recovered your GPS, but dont hold your breath waiting to obtain it back. I like the functions and definitely needed the European maps, as I go there about another year to get a couple weeks. This unit is lightweight and is effective. It takes slightly while to update the maps free updates actually means four updates/year, but I just let it run overnight to download the revolutionary ones. On my first TomTom, I didnt such as mounting system, but Ive arrived at like it better. For one thing, it no longer pops off of the mount so easily. The only reason I dont give this unit five stars is because TomToms absolutely absurd computer interface package, their webpage, in addition to their policies/support. Remember that my last unit was stolen? Well, guess what happens? You apparently cant give a second unit to a existing TomTom you've got to come with an account for getting the updates and other reasonable support. Whats more, they informed me that I cant replace the system thats in this little account with the modern one. In order to feature my newly-purchased, entirely legal GPS, I would must prove that I purchased by sending them a replica of my Amazon receipt, including sticker price. Then, I would should call them during business hours to use a rep remove my stolen unit and add the brand new one so I could simply utilize the TomTom management program, significantly less download any updates. I told them to acquire lost and simply created a second account having an alternate e-mail. But along the route, it took a couple of hours and multiple e-mails to find out why nothing would work in my account and some tips i had to do in order to make it work. Thats rather stupid.
Thank you for the feedback.

Note that this TomTom ONE is don't in production and will no longer available in most stores. It has been replaced through the TomTom ONE 3rd Edition plus the TomTom ONE XL. The ONE 3rd Edition doesn t have Itinerary Planning, but is compatible with all the traffic receiver. Otherwise it can be similar. The ONE XL is just like the ONE but adds a widescreen.
The TomTom ONE, originally available only in Europe has finally got across the pond on the USA, therefore we are very pumped up about that. On the surface, the TomTom ONE can be a basic, elementary GPS navigation device. However when you dig down to the advanced routing features you undoubtedly start to see where this GPS shines. We ve taken the ONE through about one-thousand miles of testing, and here is that which you think.
The TomTom ONE is what I could characterize being a slim and pocketable GPS. It has a standard 3.5 inch display which may show 64, 000 colors. The display itself is very nice; the shades do not shift much before you look at it from extremely wide viewing angles and it's plenty bright so that it can not wash out excessive in sunlight. While the display will not automatically switch from day to night node, you'll be able to manually set night mode in three clicks. The night and day modes have their own brightness controls which means you can work it very bright every day and very dark in the evening. There are ten different palettes to select from in the event you don t much like the default colors.
I was skeptical on the mount to begin with. It is often a really simple design with only 1 moving part, the ball and socket joint. This joint type means that you can tilt or rotate the display to the angle while suctioned for your windshield. Typically, I prefer these ball and socket type connections considering they are easier and faster to. However the TomTom ONE mount was just a bit bit too tight plus a couple of times I pulled the suction off of the windshield trying to regulate the angle from the display. Others have criticized the mount to get too short. The face on the ONE will probably be about 3-3.5 inches through the windshield. This worked all right for me, as well as in comparison the Nuvi mount puts the Nuvi about 3.75 inches in the windshield so there is simply about a.5 inch difference between them.
Along the top from the ONE may be the power button, and also a charger indicator light. Good proceed to put the charge light number one where it is going to not interfere while using display at nighttime. The speaker is around the back and there's an SD card slot about the bottom. The maps come loaded within the SD card. Unfortunately, the USB/power connector is for the bottom with the device. This is one in the few faults I have together with the TomTom ONE. Putting the ability connector at the lower limits how low within the dash the screen is usually. To accommodate to the power connector I ought to mount the GPS an inch or two greater than I would otherwise. Having the GPS rest about the dash not only is it mounted with the suction cup also definitely makes the GPS more sturdy, but unfortunately you may t benefit from that trick.
At 3.8 inches in width, one inch thick, and weighing about 5.6 ounces the TomTom ONE is highly portable. There is also functionality to produce pedestrian routes so if you must navigate by foot, the ONE will fit nicely within your hand or shirt pocket. Just be cautious about the life cycle of battery which is somewhat short at about 2 hours.
Inside, the TomTom ONE is powered by way of a SiRFstarIII chipset. This now legendary chipset is recognized for fast signal acquisition together with keeping a fix in locations that might be challenging for other devices. In Europe, some are shipping using a Global Locate chip, but the chips haven t yet appeared within the USA devices, probably due on the current legal feud between SiRF and GlobalLocate.
The ONE is powered by 32 MB of RAM along with a 266mhz processor. This introduces our second issue with this gadget. Often when searching through long lists, especially city names, there is often a long delay between typing inside a letter and achieving feedback from the product. There are other parts in the interface which were sluggish too. For example other devices within this class can calculate a route in the Atlantic ocean for the Pacific Ocean within 20 seconds whilst the TomTom ONE took exactly 60 seconds or so! triple longer. On routes of more typical lengths the calculation happens plenty fast enough, but overall it could use somewhat more speed.
Routing options presented are for your Fastest Route, shortest route, avoiding freeways, a walking route, a bicycle route, or perhaps a limited speed route. This should satisfy almost every type of routing you might want within the road.
You also can specify if you ought to arrive at a selected time. The ONE will likely then show you the length of time ahead or behind of schedule you currently are.
Navigating to some POI provides you with several options. You can route with a POI near your overall location, near another city, near your own home, closest for a current route, or closest in your destination. This flexibility is actually handy, especially since you may add these points as via points in your route. You select how long away you would like to search, after which select a category. Unfortunately, the categories are certainly not setup in every hierarchy! only alphabetically. So while you are able to select Restaurant, you can't select Japanese Restaurant. Phone numbers for POIs can also be not displayed, possibly in order to save space about the 1GB card while using maps/POIs.
While navigating, an arrow indicating the subsequent turn or intersection type is displayed. Also included are fields to the distance to your next turn, the gap remaining inside the trip, and also the estimated time left inside trip. So yes, as the Nuvi can t answer just how long until we there without having done any the math yourself, you will are aware of the answer through the TomTom ONE. It will also display the GPS signal strength as well as the estimated period of arrival. You may customize the display showing other fields including your speed.
Like alot of devices, the map is usually displayed in 2D or 3D modes. In 3D mode, because you approach an intersection the TomTom ONE will zoom in for the intersection and highlight the required path. While it really is difficult to measure how well one device might zoom in versus another device, The TomTom ONE always usually display the maps in an appropriate zoom level, taking into account your existing speed and distance for the next turn.
The volume is acceptably loud, along with the voices are incredibly clear. While there isn't any text-to-speech for the ONE, I didn t come to feel like I needed it ever since the prompts were clear, timely, plus the display allowed you to have the information you needed with a quick glance. One thing that in some way impressed me in regards to the TomTom ONE was how it's going to often supply you with not only the latest instruction, but also the following instruction if it can happen shortly after the first turn.
For example repeatedly I would hear an instruction like At the end on the road, turn right. Then turn left. These forms of instructions could be very valuable in tight areas. There were even times in the event it would say turn right, then get inside the left lane in anticipation in the next turn being towards the left and knowing you're on a multi-lane road. These varieties of instructions could be extremely helpful when you undoubtedly don t know where you're going.
This is the one other area in which the TomTom ONE and all sorts of TomTom devices really excel. There are many varieties of avoidances it is possible to set. If you happen to be taking a Sunday drive you may calculate alternative that may take you in your destination inside an entirely different way than originally calculated. Often when going using a short family holiday I will navigate to some POI, then for the return calculate a route home and after that calculate alternative to consider me home a totally different way than I came.
You may Avoid Roadblock. Very sensible lengths of blocks are displayed that you can choose from; 100 yards, 1/4 mile, 1 mile, and 3 miles. You could also travel via to include a via point on your route. You can select through your favorites, a previous address, a recently available destination, a POI, a point within the map, a couple of coordinates or several other forms of locations.
You may avoid a particular part with the route. This feature is here in handy for me personally several times. You can pick a specific street to protect yourself from, plus the GPS will calculate one other way around. Something that I use more often however is to stop a specific town. If for example you might be driving from Hartford, CT to Washington, DC you will likely receive a route directly through NYC!. not likely what you wish to do. You can use this to decide on a certain city to avoid as well as the TomTom ONE will route you around that city.
Once again, in terms of advanced navigation functions go, the TomTom ONE has this functionality nailed. We won t go into a ton of information about this functionality here since we have now an article focused on TomTom Itineraries, but allow me to share the highlights.
If you should visit several destinations in a single day and combine them into one route, you'll be able to do this over the Itinerary Planning system. Here it is possible to create an index of individual waypoints or destinations being added in your route, building everything up into one big route. Here are a few of tips.
First, don t forget to provide Home because your last location if appropriate. Second, when creating the route I like to incorporate each via point like a waypoint versus a destination and after that add Home or my hotel as being the final destination. In this manner I can glance at the summary on the route and learn how long it is going to take to drive the complete route. Therefore I can inform if I might be competent to squeeze in a more location or if my route should be to ambitious. Then, when I m willing to set out I convert each location to your destination making sure that I get an exact status and estimated arrival times fot it next location.
This is an additional feature I wish more GPS devices would incorporate. If you're using your GPS to plan vacation, you most often would like to find out how long it'll take to obtain somewhere before you happen to be packed and sitting within the car. Sure, you would use an online service like Google Maps or MapQuest to the, however you might not also have Internet access where you might be planning your journey. You own a GPS so shouldn t you be competent to look at the trip before hand?
Enter TomTom s Advanced Planning feature. This is not hard, it is defined as just like setting up a route to a previous address or a waypoint except additionally you specify your starting location. I use this frequently with airport travel. Let s say a week ago I flew from Boston to Orlando. Before leaving Boston I need to know how long it'll take me to obtain from the Orlando airport to my hotel. I utilize the Advanced planning function, set my Depart from by searching for the Orlando Airport from the POIs, then set my destination by learning about the Hotel within the POIs. I can then look at the road summary and see what lengths the trip is, about the length of time it should take, plus a map in the route. Simple, and intensely handy.
There are some features you might want the TomTom ONE doesn t have such being a music player, text-to-speech, and Bluetooth hands-free calling. Many people, however are able to do without those devices. If you need those features you could possibly wish to consider the TomTom 510 or 910 that are more advanced, but usually are not nearly as small , portable since the TomTom ONE. Compare the ONE, 510, and 910.
If you desire an extremely simple device without any advanced routing functionality, you might wish to compare the TomTom ONE vs the Garmin Nuvi 350 which lacks many with the advanced functionality, but because doing so doesn t own it some people obtain the Nuvi better to operate since there will not be as many functions.
But it really is really not easy to go wrong together with the TomTom ONE. It is usually a very portable device using a great screen, and many types of the advanced routing functions you will need.

Our tomtom 125 tooks us a journey when traveling between phoenix, az and tucson, az arizona-sonora dester museum. as opposed to keeping us about the highway for the designated exit, it took us off of the highway 25 miles from that exit via a run down reservation capital of scotland- Marana. It was the scariest drive ever and I spent my youth in New York City.
Is there a characteristic for most direct or continue to highway provided possible? the fatest and shortest settings took us through this mess.
Nick, the TomTom 125 which isn t the model being discussed in this posting, FYI doesn t include TomTom IQ Routes so it'll produce some strange routes every once in awhile.
Thanks to the response and I apologize for posting that here. I had several too many windows open
After choosing a tom tom one 3rd edition from my wifes cousin for the reasonable charge, I stumbled apon this web site which to my success led me towards your vast familiarity with these techy machines.
Firstly may I explain that I am a total novice to tom toms and also the like, I usually rely on my small homing pidgeon instincts lol.
My main question for you is, this machine I have here's preloaded with UK and Ireland maps,so, can I Purchase european maps and hang up them on?, if so, do I must save britain and Ireland maps or do they include the european maps?. sorry to sound a lttle bit thick on this department,,,, but I am learning
Does anyone know just how long the life on this item is often? we have now had one approximately four years also it died.
Four years isn t it is a shame IMHO. That is 4 times longer compared to warranty of an new one, and doubtless not from line to have an inexpensive electronics device.
I am going to become travelling in Europe almost entirely on foot/train. Are any on the Tom Toms useful for pedestrian/walk mode for this purpose and exactly how would I charge it if I do not use a car or laptop?

Purchased a tom tom one about recently, my unit screen froze up. Called customer care tried to troubleshoot. Worked with two very useful reps. 3rd one I worked, Jennifer, very rude, automatically told me from warranty can t a single thing, not having any information from me. Shocked that they is not going to stand behind a product which is just at its warranty period. Will not recommend to anyone.
When it truly does work, it s great, unfortunately, it offers been a whole lot trouble that I won't buy this brand again. The people in Customer Service are fantastic at attempting to fix it, nevertheless the product could be the worse, or at the very least mine is. The map continually freezes and yes it has even given me incorrect directions and will not give me the best directions even though I did not stick to the GPS route. I have sent it on the factory twice and I am now on my own third unit and yes it still doesn t work right. Sorry, TomTom, you ve lost a buyer here

I am the master of 2. Before it was stolen from my car, and after dropping it a couple of times, usually on pavement, my first one worked for 21/2 yrs without problems, excluding one time when I got a frozen screen with grayscale veritical lines. Since it's got no battery access or reset button and because doing so could not be deterred, I threw it from the back seat, found the screen blankbattery discharged your next morning, plugged it in and it also worked without having a hitch about 9 months prior to being stolen. I put on the extender every day 5 to 8 hr/day to be a courier driver. Perfect it ain t but with all the tips at this point and for your money, the 130 does the task. The new ones are better much longer life cycle of battery, Kudos to Tom-Tom. No machine is perfect high are ways to operate around the destination and directions issues.
