L. Gordon Sawyer, 89, a retired advertising executive and Northeast Georgia Historian, died Nov. 5, 2015. He came to be in Cedar Vale, Kan., to Louis Sawyer and Ruth Gordon Sawyer. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.
Gordon founded Sawyer Riley Compton, a marketing agency, in Gainesville in 1960, and moved it to Atlanta in 1991. His agency was accepted for membership inside the American Association of Advertising Agency in 1972, and hubby served as chairman in the Atlanta Council, chairman with the Southern Region as well as a member in the national board of directors. His agency became a principal in BBN Worldwide.
He was president in the National Agrimarketing Association in 1974-1975, plus 1989 was named the Agriculture Communicator from the Year. He served about the National Board from the Business/Professional Advertising Association, representing the Southeast. He was the 1990 recipient on the Crain Award, and was named on the BPAA Advertising Hall of Fame in 1990.
He served about the Board with the Public Relations Society of America, Atlanta Chapter, and received its Phoenix Award. Even though he attended Georgia Tech, he was elected on the Public Relations Hall of Fame from the Journalism School for the University of Georgia in 1992. He became a recipient on the Silver Medal in the American Advertising Federation.
Active within the Chamber of Commerce activities, Sawyer would be a member from the board of directors with the Georgia State Chamber of Commerce for any decade, and served in numerous capacities while using Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce, where he received both a Silver Shovel Award plus 2008, its Distinguished Service Award.
In other business activities, Sawyer was chairman from the North Georgia Journal, now Georgia Backroards magazine, a director of Pfeiffer Pharmaceuticals, and board chairman of Red Clay Interactive, an Internet marketing company. Prior to starting his personal business, he worked for that National Broiler Council, the Georgia Poultry Federation, so when a reporter for that Atlanta Constitution.
Active in a lot of educational organizations, Sawyer would be a graduate of Georgia Tech, served as Trustee with the Tech Alumni Association, and was an executive-in-residence inside the Tech Continuing Education department 1990-1992. He did graduate are employed in journalism and business at Emory University, where he was editor with the Emory Wheel. He would be a member in the Sponsoring Committee with the Future Farmers of America Foundation, and received their education of Honorary American Farmer on the National FFA Convention in 1983. Sawyer taught several courses to the Brenau University Learning and Leisure Institute, and would have been a recipient of Brenaus Distinguished Service Award in 2002.
A lifelong Republican, Sawyer was the primary person to perform locally like a Republican to the State Senate in a century. He lost, however served as chairman on the Hall County GOP inside era when Hall County began voting solid conservative instead of solid Democrat. A World War II Navy veteran, Sawyer was the 75th anniversary commander in the Paul E. Bolding Post 7 from the American Legion in Gainesville.
In other pursuits, Sawyer was an Elder inside First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, and represented Athens Presbytery on the General Assembly in 1990. He was president in the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville in 1986; as well as a Hixon Fellow in this organization. In the 1950s, he was chairman with the Hall County Chapter from the American Red Cross. Both he with his fantastic wife, Jean are Trustees Emeritus in the Quinlan Visual Arts Center in Gainesville. He had been a member from the Board of Governors from the Chattahoochee Country Club; a director on the North Georgia Community Foundation; a director of Sautee-Nacoochee Community Association; and President from the Skylake Property Owners Association.
He and the wife, Jean Osborn Sawyer are actually married for 65 years; have three sons, Louis Kathy Gordon Sawyer Jr., Edwin Cathryn Osborn Sawyer, and Robin Paula Eugene Sawyer; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandsons.
Funeral services are going to be held at 3 on Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, with the First Presbyterian Church. The family will get friends on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015, from 4 to 6 in the Little Davenport Funeral Home, and again on Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, in Swetenburg Hall with the First Presbyterian Church following your memorial service.

James Longstreet was considered one of Gainesville s most well known and the majority controversial citizens. After the Civil War, Longstreet would be a proponent of reconciliation and joined the Republican Party. He have also been appointed to many government posts by his old friend President Ulysses Grant.
In writing his memoirs Longstreet committed an unforgivable sin by blaming General Robert E. Lee with the Confederacy s loss at Gettysburg. These actions and associations damaged Longstreet s reputation among many fellow southerners, and hubby was not just a very popular person when he gone after Gainesville in 1875.
Before his death in 1904, Longstreet had several businesses including a 60 acre farm just outside town and ownership on the Piedmont Hotel. Among the hotel s frequent guests was future President Woodrow Wilson.
After the passing of his first wife in 1889, Longstreet married Brenau graduate Helen Dortsch, 42 years his junior, in 1897. In 1943, in the age of 80, Mrs. Longstreet answered her country s call during World War II and worked being a riveter inside Bell Bomber Factory in Marietta, Georgia, which produced 668 B-29 Bombers. Mrs. Longstreet passed on in Gainesville in 1963 in the age of 99, having outlived her husband by 58 years.

Youth Art Month is often a nationally celebrated event. Festivities happen traditionally each March, to celebrate visual arts for grades K 12. The Youth Art Month Program emphasizes the need for art education for everyone children, encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety.
Youth Art Month also supplies a forum for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences which can be not possible in other curriculum subjects.

Mosaic installation by artist Mary Hull is on view in the Quinlan Visual Arts Center now through September 20th. The piece, Mountain Faeries may be donated to guide the Art Academy for the Innovation Station, a part of a recently developed partnership between Gainesville Housing Authority as well as the Quinlan Visual Arts Center that started august. The center provides site specific art classes intended for teens and committed to teaching students the best way to enhance their community from the visual arts. Their first project this fall will probably be a large mosaic installation with the Innovation Station, also known because the Davis Street Community Center.
