Yes XP isn't perfect but hardly slow when compared to the bloated and rushed VISTA. If you start a clean install with XP plus your computer continues to be slow it is your hardware otherwise you have the wrong drivers installed. This will not be XPs fault.
The next thing is to buy a whole new computer with 7. You can get a different one for a couple of hundred and when you need a great computer for tech you may build your own for some hundred too. Im sure you can find techs where you live that can help you. Either way the rule of thumb is XP for old computers, and 7 for brand spanking new ones. And if you absolutely do cant stand XP a celebrity then switch the signal from linux. Its free and considerably more secure.
