Running IBM i Access 7.1 and Windows 8

With the newly released Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8, I wanted to find out drive Windows 8 and employ it on my primary computer if you can. However, I knew a prospective stumbling block can be getting IBM i Access for Windows to work. So I got down to load IBM i Access 7.1 on Windows 8.
While doing my research, I didnt find anything around the IBM i Access for Windows website indicating general compatibility with Windows 8. In the past, the most recent version of Windows has generally been a no-go until a Windows specific service pack is released. But, I did discover a statement from IBM indicating that Operations Console will not likely currently work. So if you'd like operations console, dont utilize Windows 8 until further notice.
For my test, I loaded a replica of Windows 8 32-bit to a virtual machine while using the free VMWare Player. After fumbling and grumbling together with the new Windows 8 Metro interface, I then installed the bottom version with the IBM i Access 7.1 product without the need of problems. I may have chosen to own the installer under Windows 7 compatibility mode; I cant recall. If the install doesnt meet your needs exactly, try setting the compatibility level for the earlier version of Windows. In general, the compatibility level doesnt help while using installer once the installer runs an extract and subsequent execution of your different binary. But when tinkering, it never hurts to use!
No one wishes to use the beds base version with the software, so I next attempted to install a service pack. At the time of this writing, service pack SI45664 would be the latest readily available for IBM i 7.1. The next scheduled service pack is November 30; hopefully IBM should have this service pack enabled for Windows 8/Windows 2012. Service pack SI45664 expects a selected security patch to become installed with your Windows machine before continuing. The service pack installer looks to ascertain if the security patch may be installed and may fail when it has not been. However, the mandatory fix isnt intended for Windows 8 and might not be meant for Windows 8. So I was required to download and install service pack SI39894 instead.
Once installed, I found everything I normally use ran smoothly. I was able to utilize the following with out a problem:
5250 Terminal and Printer emulation, including macro execution
General System i Navigator functions, including such things as NetServer configuration, basic operations, work management, etc.
