Yes XP is just not perfect but hardly slow compared for the bloated and rushed VISTA. If you execute a clean install with XP and your laptop is still slow it's your hardware or you could have the wrong drivers installed. This is just not XPs fault.
The next thing is to buy a brand new computer with 7. You can get a fresh one to get a couple hundred if you need a great computer for tech then you are able to build your own to get a few hundred too. Im sure you will find techs in your neighborhood that can help you. Either way the rule of thumb is XP for old computers, and 7 for first time ones. And if you absolutely do cant stand XP a celebrity then plunge to linux. Its free and considerably more secure.
