I use VirtualBox to own XP in my Ubuntu 9.10 laptop. The only reason I need XP is with my Garmin GPS. I did run directly into one issue, for whatever reason my Garmin gets detected with the Windows Guest, even so the software wont connect. Haha! What a coincidence! I have already been on Ubuntu well now Mint, but thats a GRUB2 story for around 2 years. Now rediscovering the reassurance of school in order to complete my degree, I find I should go back to Windows. Well, I use it in its own Little Virtual Box playpen? sandbox? and thats that. At least gets hotter crashes, or gets worms, it wont take my whole system down by using it.
Instead of bridging, I just use Samba to mount the Windows volumes under Linux, then share them together with the guest OS as described inside the article.

Thanks to get a great article. I ran an outside XP box for quite some time next to my primary 2 core AMD64 Xubuntu Jaunty box. Recently, the XP motherboard died, and rather then investing money and time from the separate platform, I just installed XP fresh into VB on Jaunty. For one, I was required to run building solar panels Connected the previous C drive via USB and sucked the files I needed into XP.
Now I have Raid 1 underneath VB and XP, and will easily backup the XP system anytime I would like to. Also boots faster! Planning on upgrading with an X4 MB soon, along with the virtual XP should remain blissfully unacquainted with any hardware changes. Take that M!

Running XP in VBox while I have serial ports selected inside the details setup COM1 as host device/dev/ttyS0 When checking the Device Manager in XP it doesnt show the COM port. Any one?
Unfortunately, I have not used serial ports within my Virtual machines.

I have installed xp being a guest on my small linux box and it functions perfectly. However the rest with the family would also like access to xp via their particular linux logins on a similar computer but although VB perhaps there is, when looking to run it, there isn't a xp - vb wishes to go from the whole xp installation process again. any ideas?
Check the positioning and permissions of the virtual machine files. It could be that this file has been stored inside your login without access being designed for other users in your computer. I think the default storage location is/. Virtualbox/

I just finished installing the most recent PUEL version of virtual box as the OSE version I had installed didn't support USB. Ive followed all on the instructions for starting USB except Im getting the mistake message: The value in the Server Port field around the display page just isn't complete. Im not being aware information it wants or where to seek out it.
Do you might have the solution due to this?
Im running Mandriva 2010.0 PWP 64 bit for your host, and Win XP Pro 64 bit because the guest.
Also, I run the Paltalk Scene chat client, and although I can hear sound, I cant get any audio to recover from my mic for voice chat. Ive tried with all the Pulse Audio, Alsa, and OSS drivers and switching in the AC97 towards the soundblaster option without results. Im by using a microphone/headset connected to RCA ports on my own front AC97 panel.
Any ideas you may have for solving these issues could be greatly appreciated!

I would be a little nervous about setting this up your step by step approach solved really a point! I reached the part with the XP install where it asks to the product keeps telling me its invalid! Ive got the packaging, the certificate of authenticity, get the sticker! Ive triple checked my typing to be sure I didnt simply make a typo. I am stuck! Any thoughts, theories or help would likely be appreciated!

What an admirable job. Thanks a whole lot for carrying this out. I used your tutorial for installing 32-bit Vista in VirtualBox over a 64-bit MEPIS Linux host. It worked flawlessly. Especially appreciated the bits on file sharing at the conclusion. The last time I did an install, I really messed that up. Your XP instructions were perfectly translatable to Vista to be a guest OS.

I are already toying together with the idea of having a VM to host my internet browser. I use Firefox with NoScript and AdBlockPlus installed, but figure why don't you go phase 2 and develop a virtual appliance?
I may use Xmarks formerly Foxmarks to keep my bookmarks inside the cloud, and for that reason just save a version with the VM with my Xmarks info already entered and use that to browse. If I find something interesting, I bookmark it and just remember to sync my bookmarks by the end of my session. Now I lack to worry about anything I come across for the Interwebs, because once I shut the VM down, any infection is forgotten:

I am the leader of the Linux Users Group for Ham Radio and also have found your explanations very complete and simple to follow for that members. Many of them are computer literate, but originated from a Windows only world. Your examples and descriptions make a world of difference. I use VirtualBox running XP in this little Ubuntu 9.10 laptop. The only reason I need XP is to try using my Garmin GPS. I did run into one issue, for whatever reason my Garmin gets detected with the Windows Guest, nevertheless the software wont connect. I found that I was required to restart the Hardware typically completed by Device manager. Which would be a royal pain from the a. I suspect this were forced to do together with the Virtual Machine not starting the GPS USB device fast enough. Anyway, I corrected this by employing microsofts Devcon utility To script a different shortcut that may restart the hardware when I launched the GPS software.
Incidentally, I also had problems connecting for the Network once or twice for the similar reason with the VitualBox Guest OS. The above command placed inside a batch file corrected that issue too.
Ive only had this issue with WinXP like a Guest in VirtualBox, so I figured Id post this in the event that any within your readers experience much the same issue.

I am running already a Linux Ubuntu, Vista and Win- XP inside a multyboot, my question for you is can I makes use of the already installed Win- XP within the VirtualBox?

I have already been running a non- Windows laptop for more than a year now, but occasionally I would like to own Windows software. I have tried Wine and React OS, but neither is a good example for prime time use in terms of I can tell.
I are actually considering using VirtualBox, but my dilemma is that I dont have a very copy of Windows. My most current copy purchased was pre-attached with a laptop, and was customized by Toshiba and didnt include install media, only wipe and re-image software.
Since I am trainees and am looking to find inexpensive solutions first this can be why I tried Wine and React OS, I dont wish to buy a full retail copy of Windows 7 as well. Is there a straightforward, cheap, but legal method to get Windows XP? Newegg usually charge 100 with the OEM and Amazon 80 for that upgrade. Will those both work? Are those the most effective prices? If so, then I guess I will should bite the bullet.

Haha! What a coincidence! I are actually on Ubuntu well now Mint, but thats a GRUB2 story for approximately 2 years. Now returning to school to do my degree, I find I should go back to Windows. Well, I input it in its own Little Virtual Box playpen? sandbox? and thats that. At least if this crashes, or gets worms, it wont take my whole system down from it.
Instead of bridging, I just use Samba to mount the Windows volumes under Linux, then share them using the guest OS as described inside article.
The belief that I went for bridged networking within this article is always that a client that I are actually consulting wanted me to change an XP machine through an XP machine, so I decided to in the ante by providing all of them with a Linux server that might host several XP machines, along while using ability to assign each virtual machine to some different interface, whenever they desired. Ive been using virtualbox for mac os X and winxp mainly for audio visual projects that are quite difficult to use in ubuntu currently 9.04. This is going on for up to two years unfortunately until now I couldnt access the cd/dvd drive. Anyone with similar experience?

Definitely the solution to go. Its been annually and a half I have WinXP on VirtualBox in Ubuntu, and I mainly utilize it for:
Cross-browser checks for web site design development, specifically IE.
Connecting to Windows - Based Remote Access requires ActiveX, and thus IE.
Using proprietary windows - only software every once in awhile.
It appears like you beat me on the punch! The large file size is simply an issue in some filesystems- FAT32 being one with the the most common thumb drive filesystems but creating a 4 GB file size limit. To transfer my VDI files, I just copied them onto my FreeNAS system UFS filesystem and didnt need to split them in any way. Its one other reason to choose dynamically expanding disks- the file size isnt ridiculously large with a fresh install. Nonetheless, the splitting utility can be a useful one.

I started using VirtualBox because when I switched to linux 1 . 5 years ago I was simply not satisfied with all the iTunes choices for managing my iPod, nevermind the lame selections for buying digital music in Canada. I love using Virtualbox for the Linux platform. First off, Linux is indeed efficient so it makes sense to utilize it because primary OS, then run the bloated OSes Windows on the inside of it. I too wanted to work with view Netflix but I experienced significant video refresh problems using the video.
