Yes XP isn't perfect but hardly slow in comparison to the bloated and rushed VISTA. If you perform clean install with XP and also your computer remains slow then it's your hardware otherwise you have the wrong drivers installed. This will not be XPs fault.
The alternative is to buy a different computer with 7. You can get a whole new one for a couple of hundred if you need a great computer for tech then you can certainly build your own for a couple of hundred also. Im sure you'll find techs locally that will help you. Either way the rule of thumb is XP for old computers, and 7 achievable ones. And if you absolutely do cant stand XP i really enjoy seeing then change to linux. Its free and much more secure.
