Yes XP will not be perfect but hardly slow in comparison to the bloated and rushed VISTA. If you perform clean install with XP and your laptop is still slow then it's your hardware or else you have the wrong drivers installed. This just isn't XPs fault.
The next step would be to buy a fresh computer with 7. You can get a different one for several hundred and if you'll need a great computer for tech then you are able to build your own for a couple hundred at the same time. Im sure you can find techs within your town that will help you. Either way the rule of thumb is XP for old computers, and 7 for brand new ones.
