Which you will need to I install? I virtualize a great deal, and come with an access to my schools MSDNAA, where I can download/buy Windows 2008R2. All editions with SP1. Which you ought to I choose? I looked it up on Wikipedia, and Datacenter is sold with more features. But does that mean more bloat, and services automatically? I would make use of the system for desktop use/virtualization/development. The main question: They only differ in features, or will the Standard also improve your performance? Starting with Server 2008, merely a small part is installed automatically. Everything else is installable through roles and/or features. grawity Feb 23 12 at 14:53 This line from Moab s link might be of interest: Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter edition supports around 2TB of RAM plus a minimum of 8 processors up to your maximum of 64. Upgrade paths to Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Edition are available through the Datacenter editions of Windows Server 2008, Windows 2000 and 2003. Kyle Feb 23 12 at 15:58 Summary: Datacenter is best in licensing terms, then there is no bloat, when you can install each component one-by-one when you finish installing the host OS. Music, or other people, sum this up/edit and I ll accept.: Shiki Feb 23 12 at 16:20 The Datacenter edition is made for large-scale virtualization of workloads that need the highest degrees of scalability, reliability, and availability to aid large, mission-critical applications. If this describes the needs you have then you should use Datacenter. Virtualization itself will run all right on Standard, and depending on your description it seems like youre running tests and labs and the like. Id keep with Standard until you have a specific should learn and understand Datacenter. I do not know, as well as a very precise answer, this question many have to be gone to live in Server Fault, which can be geared towards sysadmins and people who would view the differences. Id imagine, though, that this differencse are locked up in how the OS prioritizes different processes and systems. A prioritization structure which is best for file and application servers would possibly not be ideal for virtualization servers, which might, consequently, not be ideal for SQL servers. Considering the Datacenter edition could be configured as being a Core install, though, generally seems to me to point out it is less about out-of-box resource consumption. Installing the 2 main side-by-side in clean states might not appear for being very different. Regarding whether MS has more services set to start automagically in one or even the other: Ive experienced a little knowledge about Standard, and also little unnecessary stuff is installed. Its quite a light by MS standards OS to use clean state. And a version created for high-availability, high-load systems looks to me to set a premium on minimizing the default footprint more so. It also appears for being, just as the difference between Enterprise and Standard, for being about licensing. Datacenter version includes unlimited virtualization rights, which isnt about differences in code a great deal as differences in licensing. The differences are primarily licensing-related. Datacenter allows more system resources with higher limits in RAM and physical CPUs what's more, it requires more physical CPUs initially, beginning at 8. All versions of Server 2008 install not much beyond the bottom OS automagically, requiring the addition or Roles and Features determined by the target purpose with the system. While I would hesitate to express Datacenter is way better in licensing terms, everything depends on what you would like. For example, the majority of my servers all virtualized via VMWare running on ESXi hosts ought to handle between 1 and 8 cores, and between 4 and 32GB memory. This puts me well below the camp requirements of Datacenter. So for me personally, the Standard and Enterprise versions are better. I chance a few Enterprise licenses and also a few Standard, simply because thats where did they were purchased inside our MS Licensing Agreement. If youve got a head unit with an awful lot of CPUs and scads of memory and you must run huge apps on an extremely high-availability system or run VMs determined by the MS Hypervisor, you will probably find the Datacenter version is better available for you. Going to the very first sentence of my answer: It depends. Always. I determined the hard method in which Standard doesnt support ADFS. In v. 2012, MS is beginning to change this along with eliminating Enterprise V. so anyway for 2008, these characteristics are not in Std: There are a variety of latest features in Windows Server 2012 Standard edition. Here is undoubtedly an outline of the items we will do: but Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 should work fine likewise. Tip: I suggest 2GB and 40GB harddrive for AD server and 4GB and 80GB for Lync Front End server for many quick guidance for just a lab system. Windows Identity Foundation 3.5 Framework 3.5 Features HTTP Activation Important! Framework 4.5 all options 3.5 4.5 extensibility 3.5 extensibility 4.5 Reboot Front End and login as Domain Administrator. Insert CD and Run You are going to be prompted to set up Visual C, click Yes below Accept Terms and then click Ok to put in. When install is complete 3minute wait time you will possess below apps on the server as well as the Lync Server Deployment Wizard below will be. Note: Microsoft Lync Server 2013 incorporates a new centralized logging mechanism. This may be the reason for that logging tool not being installed with Lync Server 2013 Preview. Jens Trier Rassmussen carries a complete article for this subject at /S3DL4Q. Also, Randy Wintle has written a Powershell UI just for this new central logging at /Pbbp8v. Click Prepare Active Directory. As noted in prerequisites, you will want AD DS and AD LDS Tools Feature installed in your Front End to accomplish this step. Step 1: Prepare Schema. takes 1minute, and you also may have to wait a couple of minutes before this and step 2 Step 2: Verify Replication of Schema will not be necessary if this is really a Lab as there are only one AD server it is possible to safely excersice to step three. NOTE: anyone running setup needs being Administrator with the Lync FE local machine. Now lets go time for the Deployment Wizard and then click Prepare first Standard Edition server. You will discover the below Prepare single Standard Edition Server wizard window therefore you can simply click Next. During this process the below are going to be installed: Note: as noted in prereqs, Windows Identity Foundation 3.5 should be installed because of this process to try and do successfully Time: on new AD without having users, 6-10 minutes to Prepare first Server Lets open DNS Manager on AD server. This takes merely a second to perform. Next we'll go to Start and run Lync Server Topology Builder below. Now we shall be define this topology. Description: Lab Site not important, just something Next we shall define a fresh Front End pool. click Next Note: if this is often a Standard Edition, this FQDN will likely be exactly exactly the same FQDN because your FE server inside our case Tip: What works great for me is usually to NOT define ARCHIIVE and MONITOR servers till you happen to be ready to actually have them installed. I suggest to NOT select Archiving and Monitoring now. We will achieve that after we have actually installed the SQL server and will be ready to define those roles in topology builder. Define the file store: default, next NOTE: You will must manually create this network share and provides rights to everyone. This wizard will never automatically create it in your case Let produce the Lync file store share right this moment so we don t forget. You can create this folder exactly where you want but just for this lab we'll create a folder called Share in C: on the Lync Server. Next enter into the properties from the folder and offer full access permissions to the telltale groups: In the File Sharing Wizard go through the dropdown beside Add and select Find People along with Enter the object names to pick type RTC. Now press the CTRL key and pick the above groups. Next you will should change each group to Read/Write and click on Share in order to complete the sharing Wizard. Specify the world wide web services URL: Since this is really a lab we can easily let the External Base URL the default. Specify where your Office Web App server is. you most likely don t have one yet, just indicate Now you're finished together with the wizard. When finished you are able to Click Here to start to-do list. Since we're also really good we ve already done these materials. in the event you took a shortcut, backup to discover detailed step above Now we are going to install some Lync Server System components, put Certs available and Start Services: Step2 Install Speechfiles, etc. Step2 Setup Lync Server components will install Speechfiles, etc NOTE: should you designated the archive/monitoring server, it will fail because SQL for all those stores is just not there yet. Step3 Request Certs Note: if this is often a lab setup, and also you have parallel installed AD and Lync FE OS s, can recall the FE will need to have gpudate/force run or even be rebooted as soon as you stand up the AD CA and so the CA is authoritative Delayed or Immediate Request? Send the request immediately for an online cert authority Now repeat the Certificate Wizard steps with the OAuthTokenIsuer. After services are started you may open the Services to make sure that all the Lync Services are running. you are going to be asked to key in Administrator credentials. If this can be new server you will likely be asked to setup Silverlight. Next, we are going to move to our AD server and add several users to Active Directory I suggest for the first test users to NOT utilize Administrator, but 3 other users. In our case I added: Now to Lync Server Control Panel. Click on User Enable Users. Now go through the Add button and Add the users. Click Enable and in case you get no errors, you will have 3 Lync users wanting to login. Let s open Lync 2013 and login! If you might be using Server 2012 you'll be able to virtualize another illustration showing Server apart from the domain controller focused on Lync. That way Lync is very seperate from your Domain Controller. Server 2012 Standard should let you three cases of server to own virtualized. You just have two. One DC 46amp; One Lync.74br/76Another trick I found is usually to name your server FE01 or whatever straight away 46amp; then join it for the domain.
