I made a Windows XP start button through taking screenshots with the three button states, and putting them together.
I am below amateur at graphics editing and although I set the setting to transparent nonetheless blocked out of the unused portion as white.

also troy, here include the steps in gimp for doing that if your interested:
2. pick the fuzzy selection tool hotkey is U
3. drag click within the background while holding the mouse button down drag up or down to increase/decrease the choice sensitivity
4. release if your area is properly selected
5. retain the shift key, and repeat steps 3-4, for your 4 background sections
6. now delete the selections delete key

GauravK, they are OK for me, and I do believe I had ClearType on too, but I will check later. Since Jcee fixed it, it truly is now transparent. Here is usually a screenshot of the it looks like once the size is set to 80 using a standard size task bar

GauravK. thank yo a lot! I had XP going using a Virtual Machine, and in many cases when I enabled ClearType inside the advanced visual settings this hadn't so clearly something on my small end using the virtual XP machine. Kudos for fixing it. With your new button size 0 default is most effective.

I found it a tad off my taskbar. I moved it a couple of pixels and after this its fixed.
Right select the image, save it somewhere it wont get deleted I recommend making a folder labeled Start buttons in classic shells install directory, although it doesnt really matter where
Then right click your start button, and from the beginning menu style tab, check Replace start button select custom, then pick image. Then browse for the file thus hitting OK
