I used this Windows Explorer alternative to months until I found XYplorer - free version. XYplorer has more of your Windows Explorer appear and feel plus numerous extras. One thing I tried to obtain the author of freeCommander to try and do was to include all drive letters within the left pane tree view, as Windows Explorer does. He has not seen fit to perform this - a serious drawback for a few of us. This would be an easy fix. There are also several other little issues, including file compare automatically restarting after each file change - with no approach to stop it. Should be an alternative to Do not recompare after synchronization
Its an amazing useful app and potentially is really a Windows Explorere killer. However, I have to accept GBJ. Until drive letters are included, it's of little use in my opinion. Shame.

I cant say in regards to the tree view becasue it is something I always discard as soon as possible anyway as well as for synchronization I always use Dsynchronize.
Having more column types to settle on from date created, dimensions, bit rate, etc could well be nice. And why is it any time sorting columns it only is applicable to files rather than folders? And think about having Size of directory just as one option as opposed to having to go through the Size of directory button each and every time FC begins?

I still use Servant Salamander 1.52 though its not truly portable. Its still an excellent two-pane file manager, beneficial when you consider that it is written in 1998.

If you like the appearance and feel with the older Windows Explorer, there is nothing that could compare with XYplorer. There is often a free version, though the commercial version is fairly priced and has now options that boggle the imagination. For the real Windows pro and novice alike.

The actual version is the top portable Explorer replacement i know of, especially since it has a special version to the PortableApps Suite. In this version the changing start directorys are supported.

I used this method for a while on my small Win2K machine and liked it. When I put it on my small WinXP machine it crashed a couple of times. Anyone have similar problems. Otherwise I like it.

Does FreeCommander enable launching executable files, by mouse-click inside its panels? For instance, assuming one does double-click on the or folders inside a FreeCommander panel performs this automatically launch the PDF reader and the Excel application to your efect of opening that or file?

doesitlaunch: I just tested the version of FC Im using plus it supports double-clicking to launch in your default viewer/editor. It also allows right-click menu open with selection.
Free Commander will be MY choice when the programmer includes a method to see all drives. Thats a real poor choice NOT to offer an option to exhibit ALL drives within the tree. Also, the number of trees will we need? One tree around the left or option right, or even better, selection for middle column will be great, and easy to try and do.

Showing all drives for the tree would exclude the requirement of tabs on the too and drive letters, as these can be redundant using a tree that shows your Computer.

Dont waste your time and efforts or funds on this one. Poor support and extremely slow when you get updates out. Look at their site forum and known bugs section. Some have these happen to be there for many years.

Unfortunately latest version 2009 02b freezes on the regular basis now when copying and moving files Windows 7. only solution to recover is forced reboot. I have thoroughly removed and reinstalled more often than not without success. Im afraid its goodbye. Shame, employed to love it.

This is the top Windows Explorer replacement Ive found and Ive tried over 15 others. Its fast, extensible, keyboard shortcuts friendly and it has great portable support. By extensible, I mean you may use other programs to do operations within FreeCommander seamlessly. I use programs like TeraCopy, IZArc, 7zip, VirusTotal, Console, BareGrep, Everything, SpaceSniffer, Unlocker as tools, but you can even use programs using the filetype, which can be perfect for portable installs. You may also use Windows environment variables inside paths like: %USERPROFILE%My DocumentsMy, which works well for having my way through Dropbox.
There are some quirks within the settings UIs, nevertheless, you deal with it once, then gain from it daily. This is certainly one of my all-time favorite programs.

My current favourite File Manager. It does throw a wobbly here and there when upacking zip files hoping to cancel. It just locks up and continues and you've to eliminating the process from the task manager. Apart from that, good.
