Eva enjoyed the musical challenge of singing in several styles to be a back-up singer; she also gained valuable recording experience and could earn slightly money. During a very long time of playing and enjoying all kinds of music, I have heard most on the great popular and operatic singers whose work survives in recordings: Caruso, Armstrong, Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Van Morrison, to name some. But I wasn't prepared each time a friend provided this precious album last November.
From the very first bars with the first song, Fields of Gold, you happen to be struck with the pure pure beauty of Evas voice, an ideal pitch, intonation, vibrato, inflection. It looks like it's exactly what a lady should seem like when she sings. Your a sense of awe will simply build as she sings over appropriately spare arrangements including her understated but perfect guitar and keyboard work of pop, soul, gospel, folk, and blues standards. Impossibly, each of her performances a few of which were live becomes definitive.
Just for great measure, she even takes for the song in the century, Over the Rainbow, and eclipses Judy Garlands version-doesnt just eclipse it-blows it completely away in a anthemic performance that is, amazingly, understated. I have never heard anything enjoy it. Listening to it never ceases to bring tears. Even wanting to describe it to friends who havent heard it brings tears.
Happiest when she was for my child bicycle, Eva became a shy little waif-like blonde who i never thought too highly of her awesome vocal instrument. But she possessed buckets and buckets of soul without overdoing it, without oversinging as Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, while others are known to complete. Forget the calculated pop garbage of Mariah Carey. Forget the over-produced muck of Celine Dion. If you want to truly hear an incredible voice that doesnt require over-the-top arrangements and several hair spray, you MUST hear Eva Cassidy.
If you initially glance in the song list for the Songbird CD, some on the titles seem, to place it frankly, totally avoidable. Over the Rainbow. Wade inside the Water. Songs which have been remade and remade unless you may think nothing new may very well be added to them. Eva Cassidy could take these songs and turn them into something totally new and worthwhile. Her rendition of Over the Rainbow is utterly, perfectly sung, emotional, understated. Her version on this tune perfectly captures what she was capable a song and totally which makes it her own.

Im a jazz DJ, huge lover of great singers, especially Eva. I have her entire non-bootleg catalog and have paid attention to every tune often over the years. I made my very own Best of Eva compilation recently. Though they call Songbird a compilation, it isnt what Id call a Best Of, much more a sampler. Eva badly needed a Best of compilation that does her justice. Sure, its all subjective, but I am truly shocked by whats included here and whats not. No Wayfaring Stranger, unbelievable! And possibly her best overall album, Live At Blues Alley, is WAY under-represented here. I love all of the genres Eva covers as well, no prejudices in any way. I think this alleged Best Of Eva disc is really a huge disappointment. I think first-time Eva buyers would get probably the most banging great Eva music for your buck when you purchase Songbird and Live At Blues Alley and alternate from there should you want to dig deeper. But her other albums are uneven compared on the 2 I just mentioned, though you will discover fine moments there, at the same time. Or maybe you might talk me into causing you to be a copy of my 2-disc Best Of Eva if you're nice! Eva really grabs your heart, doesnt she? Wish you could potentially hear the telephone calls I got inside my jazz shows when listeners heard Eva the initial time around my shows. Just like what happened for the BBC and Nightline. Apparently, this appears to be the last from the late Eva Cassidys recordings has become released for the general public, and also the powers who're responsible for her catalogue are finding it essential to release a different anthology of a number of her most widely known work. If you'll find still any people that have not had the opportunity experience Evas recordings until recently, I suppose this is nearly as good a place to begin with as any, but I regard it cheap and tasteless marketing. I have every single considered one of her music cds, and all in the songs on this package appear elsewhere.
That being said, there hasnt been a lady vocalist since Evas passing in 1996 who may have appeared within the music scene who is able to hold a candle to her genius. All the recordings within this package, especially Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Kathys Song, and Fields Of Gold, are quintessential, and Eva made them hers. I am disappointed, however, a song published by another late Washington, DC area musician, Roger Hendersons A Penny To My Name, hasn't been included, having done exceptionally well in Europe upon its to liberate decade ago.
If you have already been living under a rock with the last two decades and are just discovering who Eva was, feel free to start out here, but dont stop here. All of her albums are treasures, and also you need to hear each one of them to know just who this talented woman to be real.

I have recently been unveiled in Eva Cassidys music. I love it. I find her voice beautiful, soothing, unique, which has a wide range and sensitive control. I like her creative interpretation on old melodies together with what she does with songs Ive never heard. I focus on this album nearly everyday. dcd
