I got the dvd from the movie version of Superstar and couldnt be happier. The remastering of both image and sound are really great that youd forget about the movie was developed in the early seventies if this werent for that bellbottoms and hairdos.
Its a waste that the care taken about the dvd didnt translate to the extravagently-priced audio version. The vocals are muffled, almost like sung to a plastic garbage pail. Then theyre mixed thus far forward that this drums and guitar completely dissappear. As a result, the rock numbers along with the ballads alike lose their emotional kick. The power on the transitions between songs, such as the goosebump causing way Trial Before Pilate segues into Superstar inside the movie, are totally destroyed with a couple of seconds of dead air inserted robot-like between every tune.

Im a tremendous fan of Jesus Christ Superstar, and although I love the main 1970 album, the 1973 movie version/soundtrack album is every bit just as powerful. While the 1970 version continues to be the best Superstar recording in many ways, certainly when it comes to production and audio quality, the 1973 movie version tops the main recording in a respect at the very least: is only COMPLETE version of Jesus Christ Superstar. I am a massive fan of Jesus Christ Superstar and feel the movie version is the greatest of all. This would be the soundtrack on the movie and yes it does not go justice to your movie in any way. The quality on the CD is terrible! There really should be a re-recording and reissue since this is inexcusable.

Id first seen this movie about the 2004 DVD version. The sound was clear and full but this 2 CD soundtrack of these film sounds vastly inferior in terms of audio quality. I might also had just created my personal CDs through the DVD soundtrack. Which is a waste because alot in the orchestrations listed below are more dramatic than inside the 1970 concept album. It sounds awful. Drums which you thought have there been sound almost non existent. During Hosanna the strings sound filtered; as if someone had used those programs utilized to clean up LP noise to excess. On the Simon Zealotes track it is possible to barely hear the chorus. It literally seems like they are singing it inside the apartment below me. Imagine a poor calibre mp3 sound. Muffled and half baked. The previous CD release is equally as bad. Okay- where do I begin? Well, in the first place, this statements to be a remastered version in the soundtrack, though youd hardly guess upon hearing it, as some things throughout the music activity sound somewhat murky- hardly what youd expect from the remastered edition. But nonetheless, the tunes still is unique. This version with the score is most likely one from the best around- with Andre Previn conducting that you are assured some treats! The orchestra sound absolutely amazing, yet the rock rhythm tracks still get noticed. The singers, however, are another story. The best out in the whole lot, as i know everyone will agree, is Yvonne Elliman, that is simply THE Magdalene. Her voice is just too big wonderful to go into detail. Dennen and Anderson are next in line, as Pilate and Judas respectively- they've got fine voices and act the music approximately they sing it. Ted Neeley, however, is far too weak a Jesus being thoroughly convincing, though to be a singer, the guy can pass rid of it. Mostel as Herod will be the WORST thing about this -
As far as Im concerned this is best cast of singers due to this piece. I remember seeing the film when I was at my teens plus it literally blew me away. If you have never witnessed it, get onto you tube and give yourself a break. And then pick the movie, so the soundtrack. One in the best musicals ever written, these are the most effective people ever to sing the songs. Enjoy.
I have a very few different versions with this musical, but this movie soundtrack was the primary I have you ever heard/saw, and it has always been my favourite. How Ted Neely reaches those high notes without his head exploding is often a wonder inside of it! Listen to the album, and then choose the movie. I was brought up for this film and soundtrack and I was thrilled they have got brought out a re-mastered version. All in the actors personify who they can be portraying and yes it shows inside the music.
The quality of sound in this recording is really ridiculously low that its not easy to believe that that it was allowed for being released with this condition. The engineers and producers ought to be ashamed of themselves. This can be a so called remaster on the original, even so the improvement is non existing. Behind this wooly sound are a couple of really great performances nevertheless its almost impossible to listen to them. Are the masters damaged? Or is it merely a lazy section of remastering? Someone has to do something about it, its an embarrassment. Recordings in the 1930s sound much better than this. Get the old vinyl version instead, its slightly better.
For me, this is best version with this classic musical. Obviously this can be because it will be the film I was described on! Really pleased with all the album.

Anyway, the singers are wonderful tho. Neeley results in a weak Jesus at points but sometimes, like during Gethsemane, he blows you away. Elliman is certainly her weakest within this version. She was great within the concept album. Here she swings an excessive amount from note to make note of. Andersons Judas is breathtaking. Murray Head concept, Carl Anderson movie, Ben Vereen broadway are typical equally great however in slightly ways. Ben Vereen features a commanding and powerful Motown style. Anderson was less pop as well as a little more emotive and Heads Judas was very rock.
Having seen the musical quite a few times on stage and getting seen the movie more times than I can remember, I remain a massive fan of Jesus Christ Superstar, as presented by Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, and Yvonne Elliman. This is truly an excellent presentation of incredible material, and I endorse it over another version. Im quite shocked with the reviews calling these tremendous actors voices weak or passive - - I see no basis just for this whatsoever. Truly, Ted Neeley is completely stellar within the role of Christ - - they are decidedly not passive, but incredibly emotional what one would think is usually a requirement with the role!. Carl Andersons performance actually elicits pity for your cursed may even make one hope he was pardoned. Yvonne Ellimans voice is nice and poignant - - her I Dont Know How to Love Him is beautiful. The entire soundtrack is haunting, along with the instruments are far better for this version than on the others. What more does a crowd need?!
I own both London Concept Recording with Ian and Murray Head and also the JCS movie soundtrack. Some people say one is greater than the other usually it's people putting down this soundtrack and praising the first concept version. I have little idea why lots of people hate this recording because I absolutely like it. Ted Neely is just completely different from Ian Gillian. Gillian provides a wonderful performance, and thus does Neely. Gillian features a more hard rock voice while Neely has more emotion in the singing. You can hear Neelys hurt, confusion, fear, and frustrations. Gethsemane by Neely is quite powerful, and I actually prefer it over Gillians I love Gillian- hes not bad whatsoever, I just LOVE Neely. Carl Anderson is usually a - wonderful- Judas. He has this kind of powerful voice, and you may really connect with him. I love his Heaven on his or her minds. All of his solos are perfect! You can hear his agony and anger. Superstar can also be fantastic. Yvonne Elliman is on the Original Concept album, so is Barry Dennon.
The original flick soundtrack of Jesus Christ Superstar is much superior to some other Ive heard. The original concept album is HORRIBLY arranged, while Previn works wonders together with the score around the film soundtrack. The three principals Jesus, Judas, Pilate are outstanding, contributing to this particular versions being the very best ACTED of. This is additionally the only version Im aware about which includes Then We Are Decided-a short number and that is, within my mind, absolutely crucial on the play, because it makes the location of Caiaphas considerably more understandable and sympathetic. Without it, Caiaphas, Annas, co. are little greater than one-dimensional, thoughtless criminals.
The only notable flaws on this version are a couple of relatively poor song transitions along with a less than stellar version in the crucifixion scene. Avoid watching the garish and dated film itself; its almost bad enough to spoil the wonderful experience on this record.
For the DVD version I would give vid 5-star rating. However, as others have brought up, this remaster actually sounds worse than an original 1974 vinyl version! Everything feels like it was recorded in a very tin can, as there are an annoying silence inserted between every track for no apparent reason apart from to ruin the flow on the album. What were they thinking? The way they treated this excellent music borders on offensive. If you want to know how this music should sound, obtain the DVD as well as VHS.
I love JCS. Lets get have that straight first. The original Concept album was playing all over my childhood. And I loved it. The movie would be a spiritual and amazing rock experience. So, decades later when I saw the main movie soundtrack on CD inside a pawn shop, I jumped about it. This is just not the remastered version. The songs are fantastic, and tonight I just finished watching the remastered DVD. Now, I thought the audio quality about the CD was bad. The images plus the music are stored on par which has a modern classic! This helped me realize which the CD soundtrack was even worse than I thought. Whatever they did on the remastered movie, they must do on the remastered CD! I think I am going to just melt away a copy from the DVD audio just for my very own pleasure!
