Id must agree there, having 4 players brings ultimately less slots for npcs and makes balancing a complete nightmare, for that two player co-op there have been only 2 maps that required two npcs to get merged into 1, lowering the amount of npcs reduces the issue as well and raising the player amount reduces it once more, its definitely possible but I personally dont think it could offer the same amount of experience because 2 player co-op and overall can be a much less expensive challenging experience and mostly merely a fight over who gets what resources.
The sole method i can conceivably think about doing it could well be to increase the size of every map and re-script ai entirely to boost difficulty, this will also be over 2x the effort compared to 2 players, as each trigger has for being set up per player for it to be effective correctly while you cant have all the feaures running off a force alone, were both implementing other projects with the moment too but yeah, it might take around the full year of development time for making compared for the 3 months this project took, not counting balancing testing and re-scripting ai.
