I have Windows 7 home edition and still have installed successfully the SQL2008 developer edition. There is usually a quirk that I found which can be: Win 7 don't even have a UI menu to include groups, even so the way around it is to include a user group with the command line. There is also some graphical interface that will not be supported in Win 7, like Perf Mon.

After reading an amazing few books on Business Intelligence, this would be the first the one that really made sense. There were certainly many penny-drop moments. Although I wouldnt recommend this when you are just starting out, you will need a bit of BI and Data Warehousing knowledge prior to deciding to jump in. My only criticism is the fact that some chapters were very detailed and quite advanced. These parts would have been more well off separated inside an advanced chapter or similar. Ive found revisiting the chapters because you find practical applications also heaps with such advanced sections. Also note how the kindle version doesn't have a table of contents so it can be difficult to jump to chapters or find specific parts without bookmarking them.
This is critical reading for almost any BI/DW developer and anyone learning the DAX language.

I begins off by saying, whenever I see names Marco Russo, Alberto Ferrari and Chris Webb over a SQL Server Analysis Services comprehend it will good. This book is not any exception! I can say with 100% honesty until this is one on the best technical books Ive read.
I use SQL Server 2012 and am desperate to learn more about the tabular model. When I saw this book on Amazon, I bought it immediately and am so grateful that I did. I have many technical books that sit down on shelves getting dusty; this book is certainly not one of them. After only a couple weeks the book has already been showing wear from use and I havent put it within the shelf yet. I have see clearly cover-to-cover and do so again - it really is truly that good.
There are countless great aspects to the book I do not know where to begin. I can point out that it does a fantastic job not merely covering the basics but in addition many advanced topics at the same time.
The chapters on DAX are specifically helpful, they provide an outstanding overview from the language including advanced topics that I havent within other sources. The book also contains a chapter on DAX time intelligence functions which I found quite useful.
The Building Hierarchies chapter is extremely good as well. It goes at night basics, covering more advanced scenarios including parent/child hierarchies and unary operators.
The chapter Data Modeling in Tabular gives a very thorough review of common dimensional modeling topics Type 1 and Type 2 SCDs, degenerate dimensions, junk dimensions and snapshot fact tables and implementation best practices within the tabular model.

The author, an expert inside field, publishes his first introductory book on TSQL, and even though title T-SQL Fundamentals is representative in the content, the use on the book to get a college textbook leaves room for improvement. I used this book for any 3-hr IT credit course this semester with a local community book gives you good information. The problems come in that 1 your order of introduction just isn't optimal, 2 the explanations via pictorials or diagrams for just a pure beginner miss, and 3 the example code could possibly be better.
First off, to address an order, he introduces straight away in chapter 1 and chapter two concepts that I wouldn't introduce until much later for the beginning TSQL class. Foreign Key relationships and Windowing functions are certainly not beginning concepts, for example, therefore should be introduced much later within the book i think. Cross Joins are the first join type introduced in Chapter 2; this can be a special kind of join used to produce data or build lists, and isn't used that often within the business world. This introductory book does what not one other does. It explains set theory, predicate logic, relations, propositions, normalization, SQL Server architecture, windows functions, pivoting data and laying the cornerstone strongly before explaining T-SQL. And when it reaches that, because the mafiosos say forget over it.
The best book on fundamentals period, whether you happen to be beginner or advanced. There is something for many developers.

I am a self taught SQL programmer with an involvement in plugging some holes during my skill set. Mr. Ben-Gans text came strongly recommended yet still exceeded my expectations. He doesnt just understand the material, he can be a gifted writer/teacher about the subject.
There is really a lot of misinformation inside the various online blogs/forums but THIS TEXT will give you a TECHNICAL GOSPEL for SQL programmers. I would say an intrigued beginner could absorb that these porn files alone and be eligible for entry level position. Experienced programmers is going to be provided insight and confirmation regarding their current skills as well as add more new techniques and understanding.
One other thing: I bought tough copy and quickly realized how the ebook would work far better for me so I purchased that also. I have the Kindle PC reader at home and at the office. The reader is definitely the text in a very very easy you just read manner if I make notes within the text, they follow me from work to home. Perfect for study! I dont think I will ever buy another hard copy of any technical manual if I can see and annotate the ebook version everywhere in a very Kindle reader.

Very easy to learn and informative book. Examples are very easy to check out. Id definitely recommend.
This is usually a must-have guide for anybody who uses the SQL Server Management Studio. The first few chapters is enjoyable reading on set theory - the premise of SQL.
