Faithfully capturing the facility and spirit of your era when non colored documents was the greatest form of photographic expression, Silver Efex Pro from Nik Software is the best tool for creating professional quality non colored documents images from a digital photographs. Color Efex Pro Complete is usually a plug-in for image editing applications.
Discover the lots of possibilities using your HDR images.
Photo Ninja is usually a professional-grade RAW file converter.
Excellent photo editing tool to provide various forms of watermarks for your images.
While there are numerous ways to create non colored documents digital photographs today, Nik software s Silver Efex Pro 2 sticks out as my preferred way of creating Rich and beautiful non colored documents images inside digital darkroom.
I spent several years in real darkrooms back at the start of my career in photography. I think that having that background allows me to experience a deeper appreciation of the is possible about digital images today over a computer. We are surviving in a golden chronilogical age of photography the place that the possibilities for creating incredible images is near limitless.
While programs like Lightroom, Aperture, and Photoshop may be capable of creating excellent black-and-white images, SilverEfex Pro 2 offers incredible diversity in addition to simplicity for that user. Anyone who is serious about non colored documents photography has to try this excellent plug-in.
Luckily, there can be a 15 day free trial in the software that lets you test the whole version without the need of limitations.
This software is as intricate or as elementary as you would like so that it is, turning it into a solid selection for both amateur and professional photographers.
Some of my favourite features with the software include the possibility to emulate kinds of film, adding filters, total charge of film grain, controlling image structure, one-click toning, and Nik sU Point Technology. While I m using Silver Efex Pro 2 to be a Photoshop plug-in, you can even use it like a stand alone product or perhaps in Lightroom and Aperture.
While you recruit a somewhat passable result inside neutral, there isn't a one button means to fix creating a striking white and black image. The quick and simple way is to check some from the presets. If you wish a quick conversion then one with the dozens of presets might actually be all you need to make use of. If however, you might be more just like me, then beginning from one on the presets is usually a good starting point for before fine tuning the whole picture with the robust adjustment tools available.
Each preset contains adjustments in brightness, contrast, structure, tone, film grain, plus more. The serious photographer are able to use some of these presets like a starting point and often will want to edit and fine tune the look more specifically to his / her needs.
As because of so many other image editing plug-ins plus Photoshop itself exploring extreme possibilities can cause destructive results for your image. Knowing when you stop is one in the keys of producing high-quality digital photographs. The controls in SilverEfex Pro 2 are really in-depth yet obvious to use.
In this panel you control the normal brightness and contrast within the picture. Two excellent features in this panel our dynamic brightness and soft contrast.
With the dynamic brightness slider Silver Efex Pro 2does some on the thinking available for you. The unique algorithms within the software program assesses various areas of one's image and takes that information into account to give you a substantially smoother blending of overall brightness.
The soft contrast slider can also intelligently appraise the overall contrast of your respective image and invite you to create subtle yet striking changes towards the photograph you happen to be working on. You really must play with this slider so as to fully appreciate what you may do for you personally. It is often a great addition for the plug-in.
Structure is just one of my favorite areas of this software. Partly a sharpening tool, partly a depth tool; structure adds that extra dose of oomph to some photograph that may it on the next level when it comes to image detail.
I love this feature. Control points allow someone to selectively manipulate global adjustments in specific parts of your image. You can add several control points while you wish to your image you might be editing and control the length of each one individually. The top slider will be the size slider which controls the vicinity that you need to adjust. The adjustment area is represented by the circle you see inside photo above. Dragging the slider right and left allows someone to increase and decrease how big is each control. Below that slider will be the enhancement sliders that offer you full treating global adjustments in every person control point.
With pinpoint precision you are able to adjust from brightness, contrast, structure, and in many cases add color back in specific parts within your image. The selective adjustment control point tool is often a very powerful feature yet amazingly easy to utilize.
Back if we were all still using film cameras, it had been customary make use of coloured filters on our lenses as a way to achieve certain books in our black-and-white images. The same effects is now achieved in Silver Efex Pro 2 using the colour filter palette. In fact you could have far more control now than ever since you may manipulate these filters from 0 to 200% intensity together with select any color inside spectrum utilizing the hue slider to settle on any colour you want.
Once again you start with the presets is really a good kick off point but certainly not just a one-button solution. Carefully selecting hue and strength allows you to definitely have incredible treatments for the colour filter tool. In the thumbnails above you will note how each filter reacts into a vividly colourful photograph at 100% intensity. Using large filters together with global adjustments, selective control points, film grain, and toning allow one to make stunning black-and-white or monochromatic images.
Like so many in the other features in Silver Efex Pro 2, the grain engine is quite versatile and delivers near unlimited possibilities with regards to grain structure within your white and black images. When are utilized to shoot with film I was an enormous fan of high grain films from Kodak, Fuji, and Ilford. Today I gravitate far more towards hi-d low grain images. There still is really a place for grain in photography though, especially in monochrome photographs. With precision control from the grain engine they have never so much easier to create beautiful high grain non colored documents digital photos.
I ve always been a major fan of sepia and selenium toning of monochrome photographs but I sure never enjoyed the horrible chemical smells specifically when working with sepia toners in a very traditional darkroom. This is just another excuse why I love taking care of digital imaging which provides me a great deal more versatility and is also far better with the environment at the same time. Like the other tools in Silver Efex pro 2 the toning tools can be extensive.
You are able to use any with the 24 different presets for toning your images or make your own unique tones and save those as presets likewise.
Creating custom vignettes has never been so easy. Using the vignette and burnt edges tool allows you to definitely darken or lighten the edges of one's photo with good accuracy. Once again it is possible to start with one among several presets and optimize the results quite nicely with all the different adjustment sliders.
This is one with the only parts on the software that I find lacking. Image borders are tricky as well as very subjective in terms how people judge them. Is a border really necessary? I d state that in 100% of economic professional photography applications the result would be no. They just risk looking tacky. While I do such as use of image borders in iPhone or Android photography, those are simply fun and playful means of sharing snapshots. If your professional images demand a fancy border to be good, that s not to imply much regarding the images.
These borders are customizable to some degree. There are several standard presets which you can fine tunebut you are able to t keep your favourites as custom presets. Even if I doubt that I ll make use of this feature much, the borders are relatively congratulations and certainly fitting in style for usage along with non colored documents photography. There is room for improvement here though.
Silver Efex Pro 2 allows you to work with any of its already established presets but you may also create your individual. Once you achieve a standard look that you just enjoy, clicking the Add Preset button at the end left of one's screen will allow that you save and name your personal custom presets. Now with one click you are able to re-design your favourite overall looks on any new image that you might be working on.
Creating and naming your custom presets utilizing the selective tools could be a great time saver for future projects.
If when you happen to be reading this review you are feeling like I m not finding anything wrong while using Silver Efex Pro 2, you re all-around being correct. While I don t perform a lot of non colored documents work anymore, when I do, it is my check out software.
Nik s intelligent dynamic brightness, fine structure, and soft contrast sliders
Compatibility with Photoshop, Lightroom, and Aperture
a. Go towards the History browser.
b. Click Compare once, this can have the History State Selector arrive this may feel like an odd UI, but once we always displayed a brief history state selector from the single image view mode, everyone that tested the program got really confused ever since the control didn t a single thing. It s always visible within the side-by-side and split-view modes.
c. Drag the History State Selector to Original Image
d. Press and retain the Compare button
Nik Software offers some excellent tools for digital photographers andSilver Efex Pro 2 in my experience is their flagship plug-in. Not only does it work efficiently and offer top quality results that top photographers all over the world are using but it is really a lot of fun to utilize. I do not declare that about most software I use for work.
I ve been wanting to share with you my Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 reviewfor sometime now but I kew it might take some time for you to cover every one of the features properly. This is really a powerful and robust computer program aimed at professional photographers and proficient amateurs. If you re aiming to take your monochrome photography on the next level, then whole process almost is exactly what that you are looking for. Try the whole product without limitations for 15 days to find out if it s right in your case.
Nik Software also provides several methods to learn how to make use of their products more proficiently. They offer webinars hosted by top professional photographers, at will video tutorials, plus a blog filled with valuable thoughts. All in this material is accessible for free.
Hi Ken nice review; very complete.
One comment re: your Cons : you are able to see an original color image w/in Silver Efex Pro 2. You should choose either the split preview or side-by-side preview, then go through the History button and judge original image from your edit list.
However, I d like to see a simple solution due to this. Adding a supplementary button to View Original could be a welcome feature to Silver Efex Pro 2.
I love Silver Effex Pro but have already been extremely often unwilling to buy the most recent version since Google acquired Nik.
My guess is support for Nik plugins possibly won t go very far. Time will inform.
Why would google need to support a photography plugin. The got whatever they wanted which had been snapseed. I don t trust Google period.
That being said, I have tried OnOne yet still love the spectacular control points of Silver Effex.
Matt, Google didn't purchase Nik just by Snapseed. I have that on excellent authority. Snapseed can be a quality product for mobile and casual photo users even so the rest with the items Nik offers is top end professional editing software.
Google can be a HUGE supporter on the photo community. Just see whatever they do on Google and I think your fears will disappear.:
I totally love SilverEfex Pro 2, it s 100x much better than the 1st version. NIK can be a AWESOME company who responds quickly to clients and gives fantastic customer care. I make use of this software the many time for a great deal of my work.
For the subsequent version, inform them to have the control point borders in accordance with different shapes or perform like a quick-selection tool. Round doesn t always work with me.
Great review I ve tried the product or service and would like to have it, however the cost versus onOne s Suite was too much! I ll try and win it!
Sure they re nice to photogs on G now but my guess will it be s to be able to get numerous pro photos on the website and one day alter the rules to claim that they own them and definately will sell these phones advertisers.
Adamski, I m unclear why anyone would concern yourself with Google stealing images. They are really gigantically huge that photos are really not and must not be on their own radar. If Google, FB or some other giant online service wanted make use of your images they will and there would stop much you could do anyway. It will be a PR disaster for these to do so and many types of you must do is have a look at Instagram once they decided to improve their tos. It sure didn t drive them long after people outcry to switch those terms that might have given them the authority to commercialize your images.
Personally, I am not related to Google making photos intended for term papers as well as other such uses. I am more interested in Getty as well as the other stock agencies paying me pennies in order to use on images and cutting the share of such a photographer makes by using an image license right down to next to nothing. Google has bigger fish to fry than photographers and photography. Getty alternatively, well paying photographers less than they can, that s their structure.
In my, I think how the Google acquisition of Nik software can be a positive thing. Now, with almost unlimited resources to produce the best products possible, Nik software/Google gets the opportunity to really shine. I prefer to hold an optimistic outlook relating to this.
All this being said, I m uncertain what any one of it has regarding a great product like Silver Effex Pro 2.
Silver Efex Pro 2 arrived before Google bought Nik.
Nice Review. SEP2 is extremely good. I don t care if Google bought Nik or otherwise, the Nik plugins are definitely the best.
Working with Silver Effex Pro 2 is certainly not short of amazing to me. I love having total treatments for my images. Nik Software allows that happen when others crash.
I have everythinh else for decades but likewise buy it.
Yes, Google supports photography on Google.
But Google is a name platform. When you enroll with a Google service you might be now forced into building a Google account along with your real name. They then have your details and can collect the information on what you need to do, what you might be interested in etc.
In fact, Google is really a credentialed provide or trusted identities for that federal government. National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace.
The Google social media is just a layer employed to collect more data on users identities.
How does Google make their cash? Advertising. Period.
Everything they are doing is in support of the advertising efforts in a way or some other.
I get why snapseed was purchased. They can integrate that techonlogy into Picasa etc.
However, I don t discover how supporting Photoshop plugins for any very small level of users benefits Google or their advertising business. Why would they still support it?
So ask Google What may be the roadmap for Nik Silver Effex 3?.
Because they still possess the team they could update the plugins in the meantime. But I can t imagine them supporting or developing Nik plugins long-term.
Why in the world would anyone trust Google on this once they have a lengthy history of acquisition and destruction of merchandise.
Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc All are free services. If you don t similar to their terms, don t register. If you don t like Google, use Bing or Yahoo.
This is not much of a post about internet privacy, Google, or image copyright. I d enjoy it if comments could possibly be about it.
Hi there! I m something manager on G Photos and was the product or service manager at Nik working away at all in the products from plug-ins to mobile.
I just needed to chime in here regarding Matt s comment around the long-term strategy for your plug-ins. While obviously I cannot touch upon any specifics, I can declare that we DO have a protracted-term strategy with the plug-ins, we decide to continue to produce and release new plug-ins, and I m really enthusiastic about what we re focusing on.
I really can understand the trepidation on account of previous acquisitions at Google, nevertheless the cool thing about working you will come to Google is which everybody here from executive level on down will to admit when something hasn t worked from the past also to try new stuff.
I also understand that nothing I nor other people for that matter say can actually convince someone who seems to possess their mind comprised about they are the future holds Hi Matt:, so all I can think are wait and find out :.
Great complete review Ken.
Only used quite sure a few times on the friends computer. It is simply amazing the natural affects you'll be able to achieve. Ansell Adams will be proud!
This software looks quite interesting. I would wish to cut my bw conversion time down yet retain fine control on the detail too. I am also interested to understand resolutions the program supports? Many extensions are suited to electronic file formats although not so much printing.
Thanks to the heads up, I will provide a test run soon, definitely.
Lisa, it can definitely handle print resolution files. The current max res is 100, 000 pixels by 100, 000 pixels, which computes to 333inches by 333inches at 300 dpi. I d recommend with the most part though to process at normal resolution native res from a camera and after that upres after processing.
Ken, do one does any HDR post processing in HDR Efex Pro or Photomatix before putting your images through Silver? Have you had dolphins, good luck it if you've got?
I think we must keep our eye within the has provided us some invaluable info on nik silver.I for example find dwelling on which politicians or big companies hidden agendas are is quite negative. Life would be to short, lets pay attention to something considerably more beneficial brothers. Taking and enhancing our images.
Ken. You declare that SEP2 could be used to be a stand alone processor. I can t locate any methods of directly loading ANY kind of, jpeg, cr2, etc into Efex. Any suggestions you may make will be greatly appreciated. As I am on the limited budget, it is possible to reliable free photo editing program that may support/utilize/connect with SEP2? Thanks for all of your most useful information and comments from others. wj
While you can not open RAW files CR2 into Silver Efex Pro 2, you may either use right click Open With Silver Efex Pro 2 or you are able to drag the file you wish to edit on top from the application icon. Please bear in mind when you edit a picture directly within SEP 2, an original image are going to be overwritten. Therefore, produce a copy just before editing within SEP 2 directly.
At here, in addition to Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, and Aperture, there won't be other available host applications available that works well with Silver Efex Pro 2.
Great review and examples Ken!
I love NIk Silver Efex Pro! It s the one software I use for my monochome work! I ve tried others, but nothing comes near Nik! My prints and canvases emerge beautifully! Thanks for this sort of thorough review!:
For professional and gallery quality skill use, the fact Silver Efex Pro are not able to use RAW files is really a no starter from your get go. You are simply just throwing away excessive information when converting down with a 16bit TIFF file. It s similar to trying to produce a quality silver oxide print coming from a poorly made internegative of your original film negative.
I think there s a little misunderstanding by what a RAW file is. I see this common misunderstanding quite a lot throughout the internet, hopefully I can elucidate a tad:
To make this somewhat shorter, I ve made some shortcuts, please forgive the shortening of most of these steps.
A RAW file, inevitably, is essentially a direct dump on the digitized values captured from the sensor the voltages which can be measured from your photosite should be converted with a digital value. Since almost all sensors we ll leave foveon sensors using this capture just one color per pixel, and furthermore, as sensors capture information linearly while our eyes perceive light logarithmically, a RAW file would look quite weird when we were to view it. It d be really dark, the color could be quite weird since sensors use a default color sensitivity which would need to be white balanced, there d be one color per pixel, plus it d be somewhat soft since there s in many cases an anti-alias filter on top from the sensor in order to avoid moire, which RAW converts seek to address using a sharpening filter from the RAW conversion process. So considering a RAW file is in fact a non-starter.
From a processing perspective, you will find three basic enhancements which are done towards the RAW data: debayering particles turning the selection of alternating R, G, and B pixels into a perception with three full channels per color, white balancing such as applying a gain effect to your red and blue channels, clipping away the overhead for a value normalized together with the green channel, and any volume of highlight recovery which happens by reducing the highlight values in the clipped red and blue channels while reconstituting the green channel via color interpolation.
After that, food items . else happens on the 16-bit three channel image stage for example gamma correction, sharpening, noise reduction, etc. Sure, some different raw converters will require different steps along the route, high is some which could apply noise reduction previous to debayering although that leads to some pretty odd artifacts, but it is pretty much a general rule.
From that perspective, most with the things that we believe of being created by our RAW converter has done of what could be argued as not really a RAW file.
The overhead and content of any 16-bit TIFF file is in fact quite large plus in reality contains all from the usable data in the RAW file. Furthermore, seeking to do any kind of image processing around the real RAW data not merely creates a lots of additional processing overhead since we don t desire to look with a RAW file data, we d ought to do RAW conversion around the fly, it d also end in both a new end result since plug-in couldn t get a similar result as LR along with weird artifacts applying image processing algorithms on a single plane, alternating color channels would affect and impact the debayering and also other processes that happen for the reason that RAW conversion pipeline.
So, finally, you wouldn t would like to apply Silver Efex Pro around the RAW data, and also you lose nothing by doing it within the 16-bit data.
If you really wish to maintain an entire RAW non-destructive pipeline, open your RAW file into Photoshop being a Smart Object and apply Silver Efex Pro being a Smart Filter this can result in your capability to adjust the main RAW processing at anytime in addition to the capacity to tweak the Silver Efex Pro filter settings at the same time.
Thanks a great deal Josh with the very detailed explanation. I just love that Google is so dedicated to your photo community through people like you taking the time to talk about such valuable information. Cheers!
If you happen to be like me, person who loved working within the darkroom, NIK are definitely the best and a lot intuitive filters you are able to get. I simply love. Its very costly to work in a very real darkroom today. But it could well be nice, to become able to customize the circles, with shapes.I always shot in RAW.
Will SEP2 allow that you modify the presets? I much like the selenium tone for an image in which the shot has a general cool look that has a touch of purple to deepen the blacks and enrich the midtones. Most on the selenium tones I have considered either need to much purple inside them or tend towards a warmer image. PS has some presets that allow the various colors to get adjusted having a curve or inputing specific numbers to render a dark tone you want. Does SEP2 use a curve for every color of your duotone, tritone or quadtone to allow for these adjustments? Thank you.
I think you re referring for the toning presets in SEP 2, that may be, the alternatives found inside the toning pull-down menu inside Finishing section. While there isn t ways to update the contents from the pull-down menu, you may create presets that are going to be found within the left-hand panel. Those presets will contain all on the settings found within the right side though there isn t yet a way to make a preset for under a small sub-section with the adjustment stack.
Nik Silver Efex 2 is amazing. I utilize it a lot and a lot of my black white photographs that I finish up sharing glance at the plugin. However, sometimes I just desire to convert to black white and add a dose of film grain directly inside Aperture. For that after a large amount of trial and error, I designed a grain preset that lets me do this without needing to proceed through a plugin that will create an additional file. It obviously doesn t replace Silver Efex, but it really s a quick and straightforward way to provide some grain to create the photos look more film-like.
One in the tutorial videos I saw re Silver Efex emphasized the importance of your calibrated monitor when utilizing SE2. Can you comment with this?
Also, is it possible you recommend an easily affordable monitor calibration device for all those of us using MAC OS X 10.8 having a retina display?
I ll use a review up later this coming year on some X-Rite products.
It may well be a typo but 126 instead of the regular cost of 149, is 15% instead of 75%.
Otherwise SEP 2 could well be at only38!
Could someone suggest the best approaches to save images processed through Lightroom then the Nik collection I know in Photoshop I can s save as as smaller image files after they are planning to customers large volume of files, say for the wedding shoot. I am undoubtedly doing something that could possibly be done well/differently, but I learn that using these plugs-ins normally as I function eats my drive space up incredibly fast, and makes emailing the photos, whilst jpegs nearly impossible. I always keep an original files upon an external drive and simply the Nik outcome tiffs inside my Lightroom folder at the very least until the project is delivered. I hate these gaping holes within my knowledge. Help, please, photo community!
Can Nik Silver Efex provide directly through Lightroom, or do I must open with Photoshop? I use Photoshop Elements and Lightroom 4.4.
claudia, you may use Silver Efex Pro from the inside Lightroom without opening Photoshop. After installing on your computer, an entry is added towards the Lightroom Edit In menu found within the Photo menu while inside the Develope module.
I m considering Silver Efex Pro but have converted images to B W, hardly satisfied together with the results. Can I use it on my images since they are, or do I need to revert to your color?
I just downloaded the Nik Collection to test out Silver Efex Pro using Lightroom 4.4. When I aimed to edit my image, the approval, deciding on the demo option, the applying crashed. Why?
when i work on the photo with SilverEfex pro2 in photoshop, can I later restore the initial raw file to its original settings unharmed like I can when changing a raw file in photoshop.
when i work over a photo with SilverEfex pro2 in photoshop, can I later restore the main raw file to its original settings unharmed like I can when changing a raw file in photoshop.
Yes, it is possible to apply silver efex pro to be a smart object, which leaves the initial image untouched. Use the concert for smart filters option inside the filter menu and after that apply silver efex pro.
I m thinking about purchasing Silver Efex pro 2 or whatsoever the latest version is. I can t find the application for sale having a price anywhere on the internet. It appears go for longer offered by anywhere butGoogle. So I ve been online at Google website. It has information regarding the the products including Silver Efex Pro but no solution to purchase it less than handing above the order and payment without any ability to examin the item and it s price. Am I missing something?
Hey Tom, if you visit it ll redirect for the appropriate Google site, it is possible to click within the Try Now button to download the trial version. The software programs are only available inside on the Nik Software Complete Collection by Google nice long name, eh? but when it had been separate it cost 199.95. Now for 149.95, you have all in the products exactly what a deal!

Theano Nikitas explains your cameras amazing features!
Nik Software s Color Efex Pro 3.0 can be a bundle of filters designed in order to use with photo digital portrait photography software. If that you are thinking about buying Color Efex Pro 3.0, you happen to be probably thinking about three questions: I ve already spelled out a bundle for Lightroom or Photoshop how can I justify venturing out and buying a costly add-on? Why do I need quite sure when Photoshop already incorporates filters? There are literally squint-million add-ons for Photoshop and Lightroom how do I determine which one to obtain?
I ll are able to these questions inside a moment. But first allow me to cover the commercial details.
Color Efex Pro 3.0 can be obtained as a download or boxed software. The various edition options, quantity of filters, and software compatibly are shown in Table 1. Each in the Color Efex Pro 3.0 editions will run using either Windows or Mac OS X os's, however, you need to specify your operating-system before you pay for or download the application.
This review describes Color Efex Pro 3.0 Complete edition when combined with Photoshop running on Mac OS X 10.6.
s partners have Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 available. Their cost is fair and you also help to support
Photoshop, Aperture, Nikon Capture NX2
Photoshop, Aperture, Nikon Capture NX2
Photoshop, Aperture, Nikon Capture NX2, Lightroom
Table 1 : Color Efex Pro 3.0 is available in three different editions; the Complete edition blends with Lightroom along with Photoshop.
By how, don t worry in regards to the Pro tacked on to your end with the name with this product. Probably someone in marketing thought the entire thing would sound better with yet another word from the software name but that is software for serious amateur photographers and professionals alike.
I won t help you stay in suspense prior to the end in this review. My reply to this question is often a resounding, Yes, if you happen to be a serious wedding photographer using Aperture, Lightroom, or Photoshop Color Efex Pro 3.0 Complete may be worth its cost.
I use Color Efex Pro 3.0 Complete every single day that I use Photoshop, and so on almost every photo that I process. I find its value unbeatable regarding both image enhancement as well as the creative effects it gives you that can be put on to images. There s nothing inside filters that include Photoshop that compare in usefulness to many from the Color Efex Pro filters.
I ve evaluated a quantity of other Photoshop filter add-ons While many are unique and still have considerable value nothing else third-party filter collection provides extensive variety and consistently premium quality of Color Efex Pro 3.0.
Let me explain to you how Color Efex 3.0 works, so you ll continue to see what I mean.
After you ve installed Color Efex Pro 3.0 Complete, you ll get a Nik Software item on the bottom of your respective Photoshop Filter menu. Color Efex Pro 3.0 Complete is with a fly-out menu that appears once your mouse hovers in the Nik Software item. To open the Color Efex Pro filter set, go through the Color Efex menu item as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1 : To open Color Efex Pro, choose its menu item, found under Nik Software about the Photoshop filter menu.
This is usually a good time and energy to strongly suggest you take a handful of preliminary steps when you open Color Efex Pro. First, it usually is a good practice to produce sure you keep your work before you take this step. Depending upon your software and hardware configuration, Color Efex Pro does occasionally cause Photoshop to crash.
Second, I suggest you duplicate the layer you need to focus on, and apply the selection of Color Efex Pro filter for the duplicate layer. This will supply you with the opportunity to make use of the Color Efex Pro filter effects at reduced opacity by lowering the opacity from the duplicate layer which the filter was applied. You also can use a layer mask to selectively display the duplicate layer using the effects.
Color Efex Pro can give a mechanism for painting in selective using its effects, but I chose the interface because of this clunky. Since you will use Photoshop s layer masking features, exactly why do this in just one more interface and another that within my opnion just isn't intuitively obvious?
If you ve taken my advice, and duplicated your layer before opening Color Efex Pro, make sure to set Color Efex Pro in order that it doesn t add just one more layer. My experience continues to be that letting Color Efex Pro do layer duplication has ended in some difficulties with software stability.
To try this, once Color Efex Pro has opened, click Settings within the lower left in the Color Efex Pro window, and within the Settings dialog choose apply the filtered effect for the current layer as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 2 : I suggest duplicating the layer yourself in Photoshop, then having Color Efex Pro work directly about the duplicate layer while using the Color Efex Pro settings dialog.
I m putting the cart a small amount ahead with the horse here, because I ve shown the Settings window prior to primary Color Efex window, which can be shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3 : The main Color Efex Pro window.
Color Efex Pro loads while using first filter in the list, B W Conversion loaded. This can be a decent monochromatic conversion filter, however, not as powerful as Nik s Silver Efex Pro and that is, in fairness, a whole product devoted to grayscale conversion or as flexible since the Black White adjustment layer feature accessible in Photoshop itself.
All 52 filters are shown down the left-hand side with the window, as it is possible to see in Figure 4.
Figure 4 : The Color Efex Pro Complete filter list.
Obviously, identifying what each filter does takes a dose of time. The name of each and every filter as shown in Figure 4 and Table 2 helps somewhat, playing with some cases these names don t imply much. What exactly is usually a Monday Morning filter? If you think of struggling to utilize a grainy and grim cup of nearly monochromatic coffee, feeling hung over and blurry you might be about right in my personal. This is one filter I don t use much nonetheless it may be right for you personally. One from the strengths of Color Efex Pro is the fact there is surely something for any photographer.
To truly have fun with all these filters could take many Photoshop-person years prior to internalized what you are all for, and what they have to could do. Many on the filters themselves for instance, Cross Processing include extensive sub-options. Essentially, Cross Processing is a complete world of filters inside a single filter. But on that within a moment.
Nik makes organizing and keeping track from the filter collection just a little easier by dividing them onto separate tabs. Color Efex Pro opens with the many filters showing, but you are able to click the Traditional, Stylizing, Landscape, or Portrait tabs to go to a smaller cross-section of filters. Of course, don't assume all effects are very easily categorized or restricted to one category. For example, Glamour Glow is regarded as a portrait effect, but I often apply it on images which can be not portraits.
Divided into categories, Table 2 shows the 52 Color Efex Pro 3.0 filters some filters include more than one category. The sheer numerical quantity with the filters provides you with some idea with the items a workhorse this filter pack is and almost every one of the filters are generally robust, and consist of many sub options that may be chosen.
Table 2 : Color Efex Pro 3.0 filters organized by category.
There s a unique tab reserved for your filters you ve marked as favorite and this could be the most helpful solution to organize filters when you finally ve discovered those that you use usually.
Of course, sometimes I just love to browse almost arbitrarily. It s a fantastic way to spend time, every time I try a whole new filter through the Color Efex pack I find a new strategy to do something. Playing while using Nik filters is nearly always time wisely spent.
The main Color Efex Pro window has a amount of features though I won t tell you them all. As a general matter, the toolbar over the top enables you to change your viewing preferences as an example, to before-and-after as shown in Figure 5, and panel over the right-side is designed for tweaking the settings utilized by individual filters see a few examples below.
Figure 5 : You can modify the display in order that it shows both before and after filter effects.
I be honest when it comes to Color Efex Pro, I am capricious and fickle. At times, my true loves on this filter back have ranged from Bi-Color User Defined ideal for adding graduated saturation with a sunset to Color Stylizer might be used to generate a photo appear to be a botanical illustration to Fog form obvious, also lightens overall.
These days, I am mostly besotted with Cross Processing, Glamour Glow, and Tonal Contrast. Let me teach you a little of how I use each.
In the changing times of film, cross processing meant processing film in chemicals created for another style of film hopefully with weird, wacky as well as perhaps psychedelic effects. In digital, cross-processing means simulating the consequence that film cross-processing may have had.
Color Efex Pro gives an extensive drop-down listing of cross-processing simulations to decide on from, loosely grouped by simulated film and chemistry type, as it is possible to see in Figure 6.
Figure 6 : You can pick from a number of simulated cross-processing methods.
Figure 7 shows a preview of applying the B04 C41 to E6 cross-process method and that is likely not something you d desire to do to the present particular image.
Figure 7 : The B04 C41 to E6 cross processing method previewed.
It s usually wouldn t desire to convert a whole image while using the Cross Processing filter. However, by testing out the possibilities made available for the Processing drop-down list, I ve got a tremendous palette of possible color shift choices which I may easily apply selectively to areas of my photo using layers and layer masks.
The Glamour Glow filter adds warmth, tonal cover anything from white to black, and softness. The Tonal Contrast filter boosts the tonal contrast, slightly decreases the tonal range, and adds sharpness. I like to utilize the two together when combined. Here s how.
First, in Photoshop before opening Color Efex Pro 3.0, I create a copy with the image I wish to work on. Next, I go back for the original image and duplicate the setting layer on the original image.
With the duplicate layer active, I open Color Efex Pro 3.0, and apply the Glamour Glow filter together with the default settings. I click OK to make use of this filter for the duplicate layer. I name the layer Color Efex Glamour Glow and often reduce its opacity to about 30%. Figure 8 shows the Photoshop Layers palette after these actions.
Figure 8 : The Glamour Glow layer has opacity reduced to 30%.
Next, I have the duplicate copy from the original image active, and open Color Efex Pro even though it is active. I choose the Tonal Contrast Filter, and from the filter preferences for Tonal Contrast check Conventional High Pass Contrast Figure 9. As you may see inside the preview window shown in Figure 10, contrast has indeed been greatly heightened, although it will not be terribly attractive on its own.
Figure 9 : In the Tonal Contrast filter options, Conventional High Pass Contrast may be checked.
Figure 10 : Preview shows the extent that tonal contrast is heightened that is often a lot more than is attractive.
Next, I click OK to take the Color Efex Tonal Contrast filter around the duplicate image. In Photoshop, I hold along the Shift key and after that drag the Tonal Contrast version on top on the Glamour Glow version.
I convey a Hide All layer mask towards the Tonal Contrast layer. Then I selectively paint in those areas inside image that I think might use tonal enhancement and sharpening around their edges while using Brush Tool set at about 30% opacity. The Layers palette shown in Figure 11 shows the way the two layers that have already been treated with Color Efex filters interact.
Figure 11 : Tonal Contrast is selectively applied over Glamour Glow.
The final image, shown in Figure 12, benefits on the application on the Glamour Glow and Tonal Contrast Color Efex filters although I do should be careful never to overly apply either effect. With careful application, the photo shows both a comprehensive glow and also a selective rise in tonal contrast about the water drops, small spider, and blade of grass.
Figure 12 : After Glamour Glow at 30% and selective Tonal Contrast the style has more punch and in addition more subtlety.
Color Efex Pro 3.0 is undoubtedly an important tool for each serious wedding photographer. If there may be one Photoshop add-on you acquire for creative purposes as well as enhance your imagery, this certainly will probably be it.
Pros : Most extensive filter third-party library available, well planned out professional-quality filters, intended for serious digital photographers, huge variety, a terrific many options for every filter, truly endless creative possibilities.
Cons : Expensive, such a huge collection it can easily take time to get the really useful filters, includes filters that can readily be over applied, somewhat quirky gui can sometimes require work-arounds.

I really enjoyed the review with the latest version in the Nik software, but am a tad disappointed that it absolutely was never mentioned how effective Color efex Pro occurs when used along with Capture NX2. Capture is, during my estimation, a superb program and is also often overlooked within this arena.
Thanks for letting me speak my peace. Enjoy the monthly newsletters and also the website tremendously.
Color Efex comes with a option to automatically produce a layer and apply the specified filter for it. If I remember right, this could be the default option; or no less than it somehow found themselves set because of this when I installed it.
I am wanting to know how it works well with Capture NX2 users. Thanks.
The Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 is effective in Nikon NX2.
Its great to own all those filters, however, you must learn whatever they can do.
You are able to use several filters together.
I also have the best filters in Color Efex - The full package is usually recommended.
Did they fix the bug where Photoshop crashes in case you apply an effect to your selection, instead from the whole layer? This happens if Color Efex tries to make a new layer using the effect.
i happen to be using color efex pro for sometime. i had created never changed the settings, as suggested with your review. will do that and start duplicating the layer first.
I really such as personal quality to the review. From my perspective the genuine issue is price in the pro vs the select edition. I would like to find out some critical reply to whether the additional pro filters are worth the other
Bottom line: for my money, most with the filters I use regularly are inside the Complete Edition, instead of the Select Edition, hence the Complete Edition may be valued at the extra money in my.
Unfortunately these Nik filters aren't compatible with Aperture 3 in 64-bit mode at this time. Maybe some day they will to know?
I used Color Efex Pro Complete almost since it arrived on the scene. I know if I had to use the filters I use regularly manually in Photoshop, if I could, it'd take forever. The time saved with this program is definitely worth the cost of it. In a very limited time, it'll have paid for itself. I often require a photo Im implementing and just run it through the number of filters just to view what some choices. The program has contributed greatly to your uniqueness of my photography. I utilize it both in NX2 along with Photoshop. I have never had Photoshop crash when working together with only a portion of an photograph, by the best way. If youre still deciding whether or you cannot to obtain the the trial version first., very addicting!
I have this collection and I dont regret buying love this system, I also develop the other Nik Software and all sorts of wonderful filters at the same time.
Hi, I dowloaded the trial in order to check if it may be valued at to buy it or you cannot, Im running CS5 using a MacBookPro, when I installed Nik Color Efex 3 the installer couldnt obtain the right way to install the files i really manually selected it HD/applications/adobe photoshop cs5/plug-in
everything looks working fine when I open PS cs5 the nik subfolder is just not there, does anybody know with this?
The Capture NX2 version of PRO 3.0 costs 179.99.
If it truly is of any help to the owners of CS5 I found out the thing that was the problem, these plug-ins usually are not compatible together with the 64bit structure of PS CS5 yet, therefore you must run photoshop at 32 bit instead of 64 bitwhich would be the default setting.

When planning this compilation of articles on plug-ins and actions, among my considerations was what sequence presenting them. Do I cover all on the plug-ins derived from one of developer and then another, or do I jump around from that you another. I settled for the latter for a number of reasons, the principal one being that lots of plug-ins from different developers perform similar functions plus it might make more sense to accomplish those one after another.
With that under consideration, the subsequent posts will manage onOne Software s Photo Tools. There are many similarities between Photo Tools and Color Efex Pro as well as in this post I need to highlight those similarities along with the many differences relating to the two plug-ins.
Nik Color Efex Pro can be purchased in three editions: Standard, Select and Complete with 15, 35 and 52 filters respectively. I ll be referring only for the Complete Edition here. OnOne offers a complimentary version of Photo Tools with 26 effects together with the paid version with more than 300 effects. This comparison refers to the entire version. If you own among these plug-ins and are undecided if it s worth finding the other, or should you own neither of them and may only afford to obtain one, this post may help you decide which will be the best in your case.
Nik Color Efex Pro and onOne Photo Tools do many from the same things, and they certainly them very differently. Both plug-ins are essentially collections of effects and filters which can be applied to photos in several ways. Note: Color Efex Pro uses the phrase filters and Photo Tools uses the idea of effects to spell out the same thing inside their respective programs. I are going to be using the two terms interchangeably inside a feeble attempt for impartiality.
In both the screenshots above, you may see the similarities between two plug-ins. I labeled several main features which might be common to both:
Both plug-ins produce an extensive library of effects that happen to be organized by category. They both permit you to flag those effects that you just use frequently as favorites therefore you don t must search for them each and every time you need to use them. In addition to your library of effects, Photo Tools is sold with several presets seen inside right column. These presets are combinations, or stacks of effects in the library that could be applied with a single click. I ll discuss this more comprehensive a little later.
Both plug-ins provide controls that permit you to tweak the various filters. Each Color Efex Pro filter has several varieties of controls which allow for numerous variations. Many Photo Tools effects do not have controls in any way, and on the ones that will have them, these are mostly simple radio buttons which make one adjustment in many instances.
The Loupe in Color Efex Pro and Navigator in Photo Tools perform the identical function, slightly differently. Both supply you with an overview with the entire image after you re zoomed into one specific area inside the main preview, or even a detailed view should you re considering the entire image inside the main preview.
The two plug-ins provide tools for zooming, displaying the pre and post images in a variety of ways split screen, full screen, etc., moving around the whole picture, as well as being a preview check box that compares the processed and unprocessed image. There are a some tools which can be not found in both plug-ins, including the select and background color tools in Color Efex Pro and also the brush and masking bug tools in Photo Tools.
While you can find many similarities involving the filters in Color Efex Pro along with the effects in Photo Tools, you'll find even more differences. One in the most noticeable differences is within the quantity of filters and effects. As mentioned earlier, Color Efex Pro has 52 filters and Photo Tools has over 300.
But numbers don t tell the entire story. Many on the effects in Photo Tools present you with a selection of radio buttons that permit for some variation from the effect as well to be a handful of effects that makes use of the masking bug seen below, an original tool which is overlaid on the whole picture preview and is often a more visual option to using sliders to regulate the effects. The rest from the effects don't have any variables. Several on the effects only work with 8 bit images, and after you re taking care of 16 bit images it may be frustrating to have the warning the selected effect will only focus on 8 bit images.
Another difference is speed. Both plug-ins are pretty zippy when taking care of small files, but Photo Tools could get sluggish with larger files. Click over a filter in Color Efex Pro and also the preview window updates near instantaneously most with the time. Adding an impression in Photo Tools brings up slightly progress box that shows how much on the effect is loaded. The several seconds of loading time may well not seem like a huge deal, when you re auditioning one effect after another, it could possibly get tedious, even though the option to make use of a smaller version from the image for previews is enabled.
Despite the pace issues, one with the biggest features of Photo Tools will be the ability to stack several effects begin to see the right column from the screenshot below. Click an effect inside library once as well as a brief description with the effect appears in addition to any options readily available for that effect. Double click an effect and yes it is added for the stack where you will use the Fade slider to affect the opacity of every effect. I haven t found any limit to the amount of effects that may be stacked, but as being the stack grows, the same is true the processing time as soon as the Apply button is clicked. In Color Efex Pro there is absolutely no stacking, therefore you select a filter and use it. Want another filter? Re-launch Color Efex Pro, select another filter and use it. Repeat per additional filter.
The two plug-ins have different methods of selectively applying filters and effects also. In Color Efex Pro you may click the OK button to utilize the filter to your entire image or select the Brush button to paint inside filter in a part in the image having a layer mask. A third choices are adding a number of control points the limited dots within the screenshot below to modify the opacity on the filter in various areas from the image. Photo Tools includes a brush tool that is going to be familiar to anyone who uses layer masks in Photoshop. There are even options to control the brush size and opacity with stylus pressure over a Wacom tablet.
When editing photos, I will often do additional work after Color Efex Pro and Photo Tools are applied to a graphic. Occasionally, I discover that I desire to go back making some changes towards the effect that has been applied together with the plug-ins. Depending on what sort of plug-in was applied, they can do this in some instances.
Only Color Efex Pro allows that you go back and acquire all of your respective settings since you left them. To accomplish that, you should first convert the layer what is the best you apply the filter to some smart object in Photoshop
launching the plug-in. No smart object, no returning. After you apply a filter into a smart object, it is possible to go back anytime plus the settings will probably be exactly as they were whenever you clicked the Apply button.
There is another strategy to go back and edit your previous settings, nevertheless it involves employing your original unprocessed layer and applying the filter again. Both plug-ins allow that you create presets, nonetheless they function differently. Color Efex Pro has four Quick Save Slots for each and every filter. These are great timesavers that help you store frequently employed settings for future access. You are able to use these slots to save your valuable settings for a photo you re editing, re-apply the filter about the original layer and apply your preset from your Quick Save Slot. Unfortunately, control points usually are not saved in these slots and if these people were used, ought to be redone manually.
Photo Tools allows someone to save stacks of effects as presets, so it is possible to follow a similar procedure: Create your stack, save it to be a preset, and apply the consequences. If you need to create changes, select your original layer, open Photo Tools and select your preset. The fade settings for every effect are saved, but any painting done with all the brush tool is going to be gone.
The important point, in spite of which plug-in you utilize, is always to work using a copy from the background layer and always possess the plug-in save into a new layer. If you work with your original layer, it s possible you may stop able to return it towards the original state.
Both Color Efex Pro and Photo Tools have their own strengths and weaknesses. Both can available lots of creative possibilities and earn editing your photos easier and, dare I say it, more pleasurable. They are generally an indispensible section of my toolbox and also often I use both plug-ins about the same photo.
Which you are best to suit your needs? Maybe both, maybe neither. The easy approach to find out if these plug-ins can boost your workflow is always to download a trial from your developer s websites. Both Color Efex Pro and Photo Tools are intuitive enough to have good results quickly, sufficient reason for more time and exploration, the ability of these plug-ins will help you transform your photographs into beautiful art work.

I are yet to used onOne Photo Tools, but Color Efex Pro is surely an indispensable app for me personally. I utilize it on each photo I take. In fact my final results can be half nearly as good if not for Color Efex Pro. Here I describe the filters I use most commonly as well as in which order:
I sometimes use Topaz Adjust likewise, but Color Efex Pro remains my visit app. The polarization filter as well as the pro contrast filter enhance and correct basically any image. I cannot recommend Color Efex Pro enough.
I use it like a plugin for Aperture 3.
An extremely fair and diplomatic comparison. In my experience, I have realized OnOne tools being glitchy and lacking important features. On the other hand, I choose my Nik tools without hesitation. All in their products are exceedingly well polished and yield consistently professional results. If I could afford one, I would immediately select Nik. But I really have some OnOne tools Nik doesn t supply, like Bokeh.
Another elect Color Efex Pro. I too have discovered the OnOne products being buggy and crash-prone. I use Color Efex Pro on almost any photo I edit.
I bought Nik s suite without using the others including onOne. ColourEfex Pro was my first Nik plug-in and I loved it a whole lot, I bought the rest with the suite. So I haven't any experience with Photo Tools. I totally have Resize Professional from onOne and discover it slow and much less intuitive: indispensable when I ought to go big.
If you might be looking at deciding, Silver Efex pro is mentioned often with respect to B W conversions. That might be an important decision factor: which tool do you have, and what suite can you grow into.
IMHO Nik software may be the best thing since Photoshop itself. I have tried both products and for me personally OnOne just didn t result in the cut.
Another worth taking into consideration is Tiffen Dfx, it offers 1000 s of digital filters based on their own well known glass filters plus others. I use it every one of the time in order to find it a good, quick and versatile program.
I am an OnOne guy, owning the main suite. I love PhotoTools, processing nearly all my shots through it. Because in the stackable layers if these were ever to make a standalone version in the program, I would not own photoshop! I know that could t happen as I am sure PhotoTools is definitely code from CS. maybe THAT is the reason some on the sluggishness. The stackable effects could be saved, it really is really allowing someone to create your own personal effects that can be utilized over and over

I possess the good fortune of utilizing all 4. NIK, onOne, Tiffen Dfx, and Topaz. I use NIK and onOne daily find both very helpful for differing benefits. I use Topaz next in frequency and seldom use Tiffen although that's only because I haven t spent sufficient time experimenting with it. One important fact about onOne is which they offer an amazing compilation of Webinars which are exceptional of their benefit of teaching their software. NIK has this likewise, and seems for being ramping up quickly. Bottom line it s a good looking world!
Great info and plenty of thanks for ones comments. I am just exploring OnOne and have absolutely no knowledge about Nik so now my antenna are up. I hold the free version of OnOne and thus far have enjoyed working together with it.
I use NIK software jointly with a few other plugins and look for it great! I ve been tempted with OnOne stuff however, not ventured. Mainly enthusiastic about their resizing plugin ex. Genuine Fractals but purchased PhotoZoom Pro within the past and loved it!
One more prefer Nik tools not merely Color Efex, but Silver Efex Pro, and many types of others tools,
The onOne crashed my PS in 4 from more I used it note: I use PS in the VM, but only onOne tools provide me problems either with vbox or vmware.
And, no less than inside a VM, onOne tools, can be quite slow, its work with the speed of your obese one-legged paraplegic three-toed sloth swimming down a river of frozen helium while chained to a osmium anchor stuck in a very black hole Dark Shikari.
Thanks Bob for an outstanding review. I too use both sets, Nik and OnOne and I too find I often use both using one image I have both full versions and Photo Tools is part from the suite out of the box ColorEfex. Silver Efex pro 2 is probably the most beneficial B W convertor on the market IMHO and Viveza2 is often a superb fine tuner. Since getting OnOne I never post to web without utilizing the output sharpener/Display mode. I employ a Mac, OS10.6 Photoshop CS5 and 12 GB Ram which will help both programs running fast. My third set would be the Tiffen DfX v2 which I find is a bit more based on the actual effects filters but does contain some useful effects not seen in either with the other two packages.
The great thing is these packages feature free trials so I would urge website visitors to try them in their own business and see the things they can do.
I trust Andrew about Silver Efex Pro. It s an absolute must have plug in, but I m not too sure about how exactly essential I would consider ColourEfex. I prefer the best way it activly works to PhotoTools though, so NIK wins inside my mind
So no clear recommendation. I do t view the point in the article
I love Vivieza from NIK. I can set the climate, the light and yes it just works! sometimes with the final touch, i m using Tiffen or color effect pro and blur in PS.
I really2x love Tiffen Photo FX Ultra for iPad. Just give it a look
